There is nothing more moving than this speech. The United States was not involved, the USSR was supporting Germany. All of Europe was against the UK. Still, Winston Churchill, a man of the past, a man who will soon be displaced, stood alone and firm against the Nazis. He was one of the very few who suffered the distinction of being right. Truly, he was The Great Man.

I can understand a majority saying, we already saved their asses once (joking) do we really need to go over there and do it again! Let them handle it. We were smuggling weapons to England as in WWI in the Lusitania. Roosevelt wanted us to declare war sooner but Congress and the populace wouldn’t allow the it. Japan quickly changed our countries attitude by their cowardly act. (There are is a theory that Roosevelt knew of the impending sneak attack before it happened and allowed it to happen to turn popular sentiments to war. I doubt it but maybe he did.). The last prime minister of the real british empire? You call that being a good prime minister? This piece of ridiculousness fucking puts the british empire and france inbetween the upcoming war between National Socialism and Communism? Why? This deluded man thinks his empire so powerful, it can simply put Germany down easily and save communism for -some reason- ?
@WMJCPA9 років тому
RebirthWoWGuild It wasn't that he saw the British Empire so powerful to simply destroy Germany, in fact he knew this would be a long hard fight. What he did do is understand that the Nazi's were the enemy at that time, Fascism was the enemy of the free people of the world, and it had to be defeated. He did not save Communism, he was equally appalled by that ism as well, but as fate would have it, he found himself on the same side as the Soviet Union as did we. It's cliché but true, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Later, Churchill was the only one of the world leaders to see the coming evil of Communism, and yes that was for a different war. I started out with a disdain for Churchill for other reasons, but as I learned more about the man and the times of WWII and what he had to overcome, I developed a great respect for him. Let's not forget that for a time, England stood alone against the evil of the Third Reich, all of their allies had been defeated and we were not yet in the war. They faced it alone and they were all that stood between Hitler and world domination. Think of it, half of the world speaking German, the other half speaking Japanese with the United States turned into a slave labor camp half German and half Japanese. Don't laugh it could have happened. That is why I see the greatness in this man.
@Dyl4829 років тому
***** Churchill didn't have to * overcome * anything. He was a spoiled brat, his mother gave him an allowance bigger than his pay cheque. I'm sure if youve studied his history you know that right? A selfish careerist, writings of racism in his battles as a british soldier against FOREIGNERS in THEIR native nation to subject them to the british empire. Hitler, went to through homelessness, worked labor jobs, a lot more struggle of a life than Churchills and learning to overcome selfishness as he himself lived as the bottom peasant for awhile. Churchill doesn't know struggle in life, and he doesn't know struggle in politics. Hitler literally turned an unknown party of 7 members, through his political,debate and pureness in his speaking he grew into the monumental political party in germany. Over throwing Capitalism legally. Granted his power by both the President, the army, and the majority of german elected officials. Over throwing capitalism legally has never been done, communism always through coup/illegal means. And then National Socialism both started to out preform Britian economically and militarily. The british empire.....seeks to establish its dominance as is its way with the peoples of the world it ruled over. It is too bad the british forget too easily that germany is also prime denizen of western civilization as well and not some push over poor third world nation. See the difference between national socialist racism and british imperialistic racism is that national socialism was removing foreigners/internationalists such as jews and gypsies. British went to foreign nations and forced them to be their subjects. Natsoc germany can be proud that they ended the largest empire in history and freed many nations. Ironic isn't it? India can thank natsoc germany. my nation of Canada can only thank it once we truly do reclaim our nationalism.

Well I guess now I've heard it all. No wonder you moron revisionists are ruining the world for everyone that has an ounce of common sense left. To say that Nazi Germany somehow did the world a favor is like thanking Charles Manson for somehow cleansing society of a spoiled starlet Sharon Tate. Makes about as much sense. I never saw a single note where Churchill undertook genocide against any race of people, but Hitler did or are you going to deny that as well. Hitler was evil plain and simple there is nothing else to say he was an evil tyrant suffering from the worst case of narcissistic personality disorder until the present day. Whether Churchill was a spoiled brat or not is between him and his parents that means nothing to the world. If he was one then I say give us a few more like him. For the life of me I cannot understand the disdain that people have today for the privilege of living in a free society. You better take heed because this too may be fleeting. Incidentally, if I am not mistaken Canada was granted independence back in the late 1800's. If you have a problem with your own nationalism it is likely because you hooked onto your southern neighbor and hung on for the ride. We have carried the ball alone with little help from anyone. So take a look around, you may not like the world you think you would like to see.
@Dyl4829 років тому
***** * whether churchill is a spoiled brat or not means nothing * uh yes it does he fucking was the one who sent the declaration of war are you implying the character of such a powerful man does not matter? Same with FDR, FDR was born a millionare. Part of the roosevelt family. Both churchill and fdr only ever lived as one class, the millionare class with no struggle. And as for Stalin, Stalins power came through coup and then the mass killing of government officials and army generals. Indeed of these 4 significant leaders, most people can only relate to one of them. Hitler. Do you disagree? How many of us get an allowance from our millionare parents that is more than our annual wage * churchill *? How many of us are born into one of the most powerful families in the nation*FDR *? How many of us rob banks and farmers to fund our political party* stalin *?

You really believe what you write. Sorry to tell you this: Churchill gave order to kill thousands and thousands of german civilians by area bombings, if you think it was okay to kill civilians, i will tell you this, he led half a generation of young british men into the death and changed british society. For what, for Poland, which he pretty quickly forgot and left it to the Russian. Do you believe the tale that Hitler wanted to conquer the island. No, England declared war on Germany and Hitler had to act, had to install a front against England. - Churchill started WW2 only to keep the Versailles Treaty from 1919 up with the land grab. German land was stolen and given to Poland, the homes of millions of simple people were stolen but Hitler (the official bad guy) wanted to change this.

I read an author years ago, I don't remember who, and he described this speech not as some kind of pep talk, but as a stark warning to the British people that there would be no surrender as long as he was in charge, so they'd better get ready for more pain and suffering. He pulled no punches...
@jamesl.rockwell94569 років тому
This was the second time Churchill delivered this speech, the first one was in the house of commons (the second on the radio). Churchill didnt want to do it. He was very tired and without the mood to do it. Harold Nicolson (Under-Secretary of State) write to Clementine (Churchill's wife): "How i wish Winston would not talk on the wireless unless he is feeling in good form. He hates the microphone, and when we bullied him into speaking last night, he just sulked... Now, as delivered in the House of Commons, that speech was magnificent... but it sounded ghastly on the wireless. All the great vigour he put into it seemed to evaporate."
@toomaskarmo94356 років тому
And yet was the BBC performance "ghastly"? A few stumbles do not make for ghastly delivery. They instead suggest honesty and humanity. The last thing the BBC, and through their microphones the world's free peoples in the UK and abroad, needed was the kind of gesticulatory rant cultivated by the Reichsführer. The Prime Minister's measured, careful tone seems to me to match his solemn subject matter. A bit of a peroration might be appropriate at the end, but indeed at that point the Prime Minister's tone does rise, as one might wish. (In making these corrective remarks, I do must not be taken to denigrate the quoted critic of this oratory, Sir Harold Nicolson. Sir Harold himself made solid contributions to British diplomatic, parliamentary, literary, and horticultural life.)

I believe speaking in the House of Commons called for oratory, but speaking on the radio required a conversational style, as if you were talking to people in their living rooms. What I find remarkable in the radio broadcasts is how low key and conversational he is - and how honest about forthcoming hardship, the possibility of invasion and even of defeat. Whether this low key style was deliberate or not I think it is exactly right for those listening.
