Portugal is one of the most popular spots for European travelers. It has great weather, cheap prices and wonderful people. This video covers some of the issues that travelers and tourists face when they visit Portugal. Whether you are having a pastel de belem in Lisbon, drinking Porto wine in Porto or just hitting the beaches all along the Portuguese coasts, a few things may stick out at you.

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

I was born in Lisbon but my parents immigrated to the U.S. when I was a baby. When I visited my family in Portugal in, on my own, I was shocked at how much they took pride in showing me all of the sights even though I know they have seen them a million times! Both my family in Monte Real and Lisbon drove me all over the place, took me to the coast, old castles and monasteries, the caves, and they never once looked bored or like it was a burden. It really taught me a lot about hospitality. The only thing was because I speak kitchen Portuguese, they felt the need to order for me at restaurants, LOL! So it was nice at the airport on my way back to the states, I went through the Portuguese speaking line and the security agent said that I did great speaking Portuguese. Hehe. Another shock was that though both families were not rich, they both had 2nd homes near the beach. They called it "quality of life". They worked to live. Hopefully I will have a 2nd home one day, in Portugal! :)

You are very lucky. I experienced some of the kindest people in Portugal when I visited last year. We ran into some issues the first day...everything that could go wrong, did. I literally broke down crying and 2 waitresses in a small cafe bought me food, helped me find a working ATM machine and helped me calm down. Then one of the locals in the cafe let us follow them out of the city on the road to Sagres, because we were lost with no phone or GPS and I only spoke English. I've never experienced that level on kindness in people before. Eternally grateful.

if you come to Portugal please don't stay on a rental apartment, it is a really big problems for the locals now because there are no more houses in central Lisbon that we can actually live in, because they're all being rented by tourists! also this make the rental prices go up like crazy, like there are people who can't afford to live in their city anymore! PLEASE STAY IN HOTELS/HOSTELS it's really nice I promise:)

Just came back from Portugal. My 2nd time in a year. I truly love this city. For the summer you can fly direct from JFK to Lis on delta. The people are very friendly. We went back to a restaurant in the barrio alto just because of the great service and delicious pork cheeks. The waitress remembered us and started screaming and hugging us. So special. One thing is the pick pockets are real. However they are nice. My husband's sunglasses were picked but after the pickpocket realized they were prescription he gave them back! True story!

And an extra for the americans, in Portugal there is no tip!!! You pay for the meal, the restaurant pays the service with the money they win from the meal. Sometimes people give 2-3€ to the waiter because they really like him/her, but there isn't the "20% of the meal in tips" or "if I don't tip they are gonna kill me".

Victoria, I hate the tipping culture of the U.S. It seems everyone expects to be tipped at least 20%, even when you line up for your own food and drink. It gets really expensive. I loved this about Portugal, even though I usually left a small tip, though it’s not expected.

I visited Lisbon last week! What an amazing city. I think what shocked me the most was the diversity of the tourists and locals in the same place. Here in Spain, you really don't see tourists outside La Plaza Mayor. In Lisbon, it is totally different. There are travelers and locals all mixed and mingling together. This also applies to the night life as well! Even though I spoke English and Spanish, I ended up meeting people from the USA, Brazil, and France! We all got drinks and it was an awesome time. Definitely recommend Portugal for those who are considering traveling.

I knew there was an abundance of seafood but was shocked at how large the shrimp were. My Mom and I were in Sagres and Lisbon last August. Both times we ordered prawns (shrimp), they were as big as the lobster in the US. We kept taking pictures and marveling at how large they were. You already mentioned it but still shocked that liquor and seafood were so cheap in Portugal. We were with family, would go into a local store in Sagres, pick up 5 bottles of wine (great wine, mind you!) and it would be like 6 euros. Many great nights drinking wine at night on the balcony of our hotel by the sea.

That smoking comment seemed a bit exaggerated to me! I'm Portuguese and the majority of people I know don't smoke. And we are aware that it is very unhealthy. The other comment about hotels also surprised me - I've stayed in nice mid-range hotels throughout the country!
@lechatgris7810
@lechatgris7810 7 років тому
I'm a Portuguese living in Scotland and I don't think his comment was exaggerated at all. The anglos are absolutely obsessed with smoking. They hate it with a passion. They'll stare at smokers as if they're doing meth. In France, Portugal and most of Southern Europe, we know that tobacco is bad for you but we don't demonize it. It's socially-acceptable to smoke. That's the difference. I think this has to do with the fact that smoking in the US and Britain is associated with the lower-classes whereas in Portugal, Italy and France, we still have a romanticised image of cigarettes being smoked by artists and poets sitting in cafés.
@Maaariella
@Maaariella 7 років тому
Hmm, OK. Then it is more a matter of attitude towards smoking than exactly of numbers (from a quick search, it doesn't seem that we Portuguese smoke more than other western countries).

No fundo gostamos de ser e mais importante e até curioso...gostamos de nos sentir Portugueses. :) Adorei o teu simples comentário porque de tão simples palavras mas de profundo significado. Acho que me revejo porque sou muito Português muito Eu :) Now in english so our dear visitors can understand what i have just said : "ahaha so typically Portuguese :)) love that they adore us :)) it seems that we are all proud and that initial shyness of Portuguese is soon broken so to speak, by the vanity in the good sense to compliment us, we are all soon full of self-esteem and we were soon communicative and talkative. I like receiving good and praising in the heart. In the background we like to be and more important and even curious ... we like to feel Portuguese. :) I loved your simple comment because of such simple words but of deep meaning. I think I'll come back because I'm very Portuguese Eu Eu :)

1 - Depends on the place really. Just ask before hand / 2 - Yeah, we eat pretty late. We like to dine at 10, 5 pm just seems far too early/ 3 - Most of us hate bull fighting, but yeah, the forcados are a traditional, at least it doesn't harm the bulls as much as span / 4 - We really don't smoke that much, but we tend to let people smoke as long as it doesn't bother others, which is, you know, logical/ 5 - Yeah, our hostels re pretty good, hotels not so much, though you can find a few good cheap ones / 6 - We make eating an activity and e don't like to stick to time constraints. A dinner with us is a full evening ritual. Hey, sue us we like to hve fun/ 7 - We don't drive that badly, you should see germany, those guys go fast/ 8 - Yeah, they tend to go after tourist a lot, just bare through it, it stops after a while/9 - Yeah, we're pretty cheap. In case you care, a small beer here is 50 cents in some places, only in expensive ones is it 1 euro. Hey, the other day i boght half a litter and a shot for 1,50 euros/ 9 - Just get used to the pavement, it's not that bad

Just got back from Lisbon and Porto and a few other places too and things must have changed a lot in 5 years since this was made. Drivers were so calm - very little horn honking and definitely I did not see speeding or craziness. As for smoking, I was shocked how little smoking there was - definitely more smoking than the U.S. but nowhere near what I've seen in France, Germany or Spain. Prices were still very good. Food was delish and people were incredibly NICE! Watch out for those slick pavers! You can definitely fall down. And there was lots of dog poop! One thing I was really shocked at was how modern and beautiful and clean (except for dog poop) that everywhere we went was...all the charm and beauty of Europe with all modern conveniences!

@@guilhermecastro9893 By "mandatory", I think she meant it's expected, like it is in the US, and I think it's expected in Canada as well. In many countries, tipping isn't really expected. In France, for instance, they don't really tip as such, it's more rounding up the bill (although in establishments that cater to tourists they'll quite happily accept a tip). But in Japan, leaving a tip can be considered as an insult, because unlike in other countries, good service there is considered the bare minimum standard.

One of the things that I've noticed and that had me shocked was the extensive use of stone as a building material, but not old soft limestone or marble like in most of Europe. The Portuguese build with granite. If you go to Oporto, check Torre dos Clérigos (on the video, at 5:33, it's the tower on the background of the photo). It's entirely made of granite (which is a tough b!tch of a material to work with) and beautiful adorned. ON that picture, it does not look all that big, but up close it is ridiculously large for something built some 250 years ago - a 75 meter tall tower, equivalent to a 25-story building.

Just one remark... Number 1 shock: It is already more than 2 years (so even before you posted this) that law has changed! If they don't tell you in advance you have to pay for the starters and they place them on the table (without you asking for them) and you eat them, you can refuse to pay for them! One good advice... always ask the menu and check for prices. And as an Western-European with great love for Portugal and it's people I only have this (cheap) advice: you are the visiting person, adapt your behavior to the local customs and try to speak at least a little of the language -basics like "hello", "thank you", "sorry",.... Don't try to behave if like you own the place. And you will find that people are a lot more friendly... (This is applicable for every country you go to). As a foreigner I didn't find anything shocking in Portugal, only nice surprises, maybe I'm in soul Portuguese? BTW Nice pictures giving a good impression of Portugal to the common tourist.

Mark, I found quite a few people outside Lisbon don't speak English. My experience was at the restaurants along the highway. You are right about great value. One would think the beer in a downtown Lisbon hotel would be quite expensive. My cost for Sagres cerveja was 2 Euros. I kid you not. I also went with the apartment rental. I stayed with 3 friends and our apartment cost $165 per day for a place right on the Atlantic Ocean. It was beautiful. One last thing I was shocked about (at least in Lisbon) was that when a stoplight turns green, the cars honk their horns immediately. They don't wait for you. The horns start honking as soon as that light turns green. LOL!

So, for a little insight, in Portugal most people have dinner at 8 pm, I guess Cuz it's when the news is on? In Porto there are more hotels and houses to rent. Renting apartments is cheaper than hotels. You can smoke anywhere outside yes. We don't drive that fast xD just put your seat belt on xD. Guys who talk to you on the streets selling drugs is 90% fake. Real dealers have customers and you need to know people who know them to buy. Drugs are disxriminalized if you're carrying enough for 3 days consumption I think. If you're carrying more it's considered carrying with he intent to sell and its a crime and you can go to jail. You can carry X amount for yourself thats no a crime, from marijuana to heroine. If you're carrying more or selling its a crime. Btw we're working on banning bull fighting most people hate it except for some priveleged old rich families who have it in "their blood". Weirdos if you ask me xD You have a nice pronunciation btw! Oh and it shocks me that people don't pay for the bread and stuff in other countries xD
@MsCarmenxita
@MsCarmenxita 7 років тому
Valathia the tradition of killing the bull in Barrancos began because it was a way of feeding the inhabitants of the town in old times. So the bull would be killed and before the dead animal would start to get an infection, the meat of the bull would be grilled and properly cooked and given to the starving poor people of Barrancos. It's not just a tradition! It started by being a way to feed the poor people. Something that nobody knows I guess!!!
@Valathia
@Valathia 6 років тому
Yeah, and that's fine and cute, are they feeding the starving people now? No. Making it pointless tradition. It may have started with beautiful intents, but as time went by it became more and more disgusting and you know very well that's some rich people's sport.

I have news for you darling. Last bullfighting in Barrancos I have eaten bull meat. There are loads of pointless traditions then! How come in pamplona throw tomatoes to one another. Big deal! JUST BECAUSE WE KILL THE ANIMAL OK THEN YOU HAVE TO STOP EATING PORK AND ALL SORTS OF ANIMALS. PROBABLY YOU WILL HAVE TO LIVE IN ANOTHER PLANET, DARLING!
@Valathia
@Valathia 6 років тому
You brutally murder an animal, not following strict regulations saying you should kill them in a human way.This is not the freaking usa, we have regulations and we take care of the animals in this country! murdering an animal for fun is sick, and if you can't see that . i'm sorry but it's just what it is. You're hurting an animal for sport, making him defend himself because he's cornered and suffering. It's disturbed and sick behaviour. If you haven't seen it by now you're just hopeless and i will not indulge you further in this conversation.
@MsCarmenxita
@MsCarmenxita 6 років тому
You dont need to remind me that I live in my own country... A country of hypocrites.I have got news for you. we have spent a lot more time killing animals then trying to save them. It is weird that the human kind have been ignoring the animals for this long. Besides they wont stop killing them just because some people decided to care about them only now. There are so many rules and regulations and each year that goes by someone dies because they keep their beloved animals just for fun. Yes because an animal can kill and hurt a human being too. In what way this sounds different to you?

Smoking is prevalent all over Europe. No big deal. Food is inexpensive when you go out, and you can go to the outdoor booths for chicken and Ginja (a very strong cherry liquor.) Portugal is wonderful and so are the people.

We spent only 5 days in and around Lisbon in December 2019, we loved the food, the people and the weather was really mild for winter... my wife was really puzzled (more like pissed, ha ha ha...) because most of the women looked great despite eating those delicious pastries right in front of us. 🤣🤣🤣

If anyone wants some extra tips on visiting Portugal: Early June will not be crowded at all (except in major cities, where it will usually be crowded regardless-- like Lisbon, Porto, and any other touristy places), and it also won't be very warm either. I visited June 2018 and it was fairly cool weather and not very many people around. As for festivals and activities, those are mainly late June through August. Portugal's busiest tourist times are July through August, where it gets hot and a lot of people visit. If you're going to visit (no matter what time of the year) bring warm clothes. It gets pretty cold at night and I regret only bringing one sweater when I visited because I thought it would be warm. I ended up looking like I wore the same outfit in every picture I took. Even if you don't use it, it's always better to be prepared. A lot of people only go to major tourist spots like Lisbon and Porto. And yes, those are definitely places you'll want to visit, some other really cool and underrated places include Costa Nova, Algarve, Coimbra, or Aveiro. These are pretty "local" compared to super popular places like Lisbon, but still fun to visit nonetheless and have awesome restaurants.

I went there about five years ago because it was the least expensive flight to get to Europe. After staying three night at the end of my trip, I've been there every year since! Wonderful place that I fell in love with.
