Thomspon Emperador Review:
The Thompson Emperador is a 15-inch long cigar with a 120 gauge. Bespoke Unit Founder Paul Anthony gave it to CP as a gift. Being a professional, he thought he'd review it in a video.
This informal review hasn't been structured like our normal cigar videos. Instead, you'll be able to enjoy CP's lighthearted ramblings as he tries to keep the Emperador lit.
Firstly, the Emperador is a handmade cigar that's been rolled with extra long leaf. There are some soft spots in the construction and it was very difficult to cut. In the end, CP used a straight razor to remove but the cap and covered foot.
Lighting proved to be very challenging and CP had to use a Colibri Firebird (amzn.to/2GMMUQB) to light it properly. Nevertheless, the cigar kept going out through the smoke and it had to be drawn on regularly.
The first notes experienced were quite aromatic with a few herbs including rosemary, thyme and sage.
A few hours later, CP managed to make a dent in the first third. He started to experience a strange gasoline note along with the herby flavours. This eventually developed to become bitter much like the skin of a peanut.
As the cigar requires continuous draws to stay lit, the top third become very hot to the touch. So much so that it was impossible to moisten with the fingers to fight the ongoing runners and canoeing experienced during the smoke.
As CP progressed down the cigar, he began to get quite lightheaded due to the continuous draws to keep the cigar lit. Nevertheless, through sheer stubbornness, he made it down to the 2nd Third.
Once near the band, the smoke became fuller and gave relatively decent draws. However, it was so hot to the touch that each draw was quite painful. In terms of aromas, they had improved and remained quite herby with a slight gasoline aftertaste.
Eventually, CP had to give up. Therefore, he dissected the remains to see how it was constructed. Indeed, the cigar was filled with very long leaf. However, it had several layers of thick binder, which may be one reason why the cigar was so hard to smoke.
Additionally, due to the many draws, it had also become very moist. Whilst this is normal for most cigars, the level of moisture here probably made it almost unsmokable as it would not burn.
If you're looking for a big cigar that still gives a satisfying smoke, consider the Asylum 13 or Gurkha Sinister. Whilst they only be 8x80, they are thoroughly enjoyable.
