Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

I'm an American with a Lamont ancestor that was a survivor of this massacre. To avoid being pursued by the Campbell Clan he took his mother's maiden name (Young) and emigrated to Antrim in Northern Ireland. His family eventually made it across the pond to America 2 centuries later.

Robert Duff Green was a major landholder in early Virginia. He was granted over 120,000 acres of land in colonial Virginia. It is said that he was the male descendant of James Lamont Green, who changed his name and moved to Northern Ireland along with some brothers to hide from the Campbells. Robert Duff Green was also the nephew of William Duff Viscount Macduff through his mother's Duff family. William Russell, Robert Green, Jost Hite, and William Duff were all families that were related and had gigantic landholdings in early Virginia. 3 of the 4 were from Scotland. FIfe and Aberdeen areas I believe. Russell of Aden and Duff of Braco and 1st Earl Fife. Yes.

I am Scottish and I love Clan stories. I believe that they are very important as many of these stories are covered up, or simply forgotten. They are all an important part of our history and we should remember them. I would also like to point out, as someone who is still in education, that we are never taught about any of our history in schools, save for the necessary Higher History SQA course which covers The Acts of Union and the factors pointing towards it. The course doesn't even cover anything after 1740 so no Highland clearances or '45-6 rebellion and I feel that the SQA picks the boring part of our history that dissuades many students of history from enjoying history. This is a very important channel Bruce because you are teaching us what we should be learning. I'll make one more example: So I'm from Musselburgh, and tomorrow is the anniversary of The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh and I will be doing a guided walk for it, but the school never told anyone about this walk. Do they not value history? Or do they not care, or not even know? I've had to discover Scottish History for myself and education hasn't helped with that at all, save for my wonderful history teacher. You're not alone. I'm Canadian. I attended secondary school some 40 years ago. Our history classes were so boring that I swear I got more sleep in those than I did most weekends. I remember one particular history teacher who would drone on in a monotone for forty minutes, making you lose any interest whatsoever in whatever he was talking about within the first thirty seconds. I can only conclude that it was all calculated to discourage any REAL interest in history. And things are worse NOW than they were back then, as political correctness and "woke" ideology erase critical aspects of historical discussion in the classroom. Today, I am an amateur historian and historical re-enactor. I bring history to life, and provide memorable, impactful lessons in my nation's history to the public at every opportunity. Never give up... carry that historical interest of yours forward, and MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I always asked throughout school when we would learn Scottish history because I grew up with stories from my Father about the clans, instead we were taught about the glory of the British empire. It's only after I left, studied on my own I realized there's a reason it's neglected as no Scot would ever claim to be a Brit once they knew the history!

Currently in my own time I'm reading about Scottish Commanders and you could see that they held the same values about caring for their men even when serving in The British Empire. Sir John Moore and Sir Ralph Abercromby both come to mind. And yes, the highland clearances were some of the worst acts ever committed by humanity. The effects are still felt today, although most people don't know much about them.@@onetimebear5681

I have news dear. Here in the US even if we are in university doing a world history degree for that time period neither Scotland or Ireland are included unless you do your master's and doctorate on it! Considering how many Scots and Irish (not to mention the Ulster Scots) that came over here to create this country you'd think that history would be important to us! Nope!🤨

Born and raised in Glasgow, (Kentucky) I can trace my ancestry to the Lamont clan. I've done some research into the massacre of Dunoon, but never found anything that explains it quite like this. Thanks for this! Love your stories!

I'm second generation Australian from Scottish coal miner stock, who immigrated in the 1920s due to the national coal strike issues. We were told by our family that we are from Campbell stock, but my research suggests that we are Buchanan and Davidson. I have experienced shock from Scottish friends when I have revealed possible Campbell heritage. I married a 2nd generation Australian girl who had heritage with the McNeill people from the Isle of Barra. I love hearing your perspective on history, and give more credence to folk history than official historians allow. Thank you.

With a related sept name in my father's side of the family, I went to visit the Cowal Peninsula on my last trip to Scotland... beautiful sea views! But not much to see in terms of Lamont history, except in the head of the hotelier, who had a whole scrapbook for the reunions! What a wealth lives in historians 🥰

I was born in NY state, I've done a lot of genealogy research. I've discovered that my 9th gr.grandfather was Sir John II of clan Lamont, he was killed there at Toward Castle, his wife and young sons escaped to Ireland and then on to America. Thank you for the history you give us. I must say this video is one of my favorite for obvious reasons ❤

I am a direct descendant of Andrew Lamont Young. 9th Great-Grandfather. Lady Mary Young saved her family by fleeing to Ireland with her sons, changing their surnames to protect their identity. She gave her Maiden Name to Andrew. His grandson, James Young, left Ireland in 1740 to escape a brutal years-long winter where over 2Million people died. James Young landed in Virginia and the Young Name was born in the new world.

I'm an adopted Scot, living in Fife now. I love to learning about history as so much of it still affects the present. While my eyes are focussed on how to make a better future it is important to understand the present, and for that one tends to need to trace historical roots.

Scots born Aussie. I read once about a Highland clan who massacred a whole family for simply being homeless and trying to live off the land. I’m sorry it was some time ago that I read it, so I don’t remember the names involved.

I'm a US citizen with Scottish ancestry. Most arrived in New Brunswick in the 1800's. Macintosh, Fraser are the most frequent names and many were born in Inverness or elsewhere in the Higlands. That's why Glencoe is so interesting to me. I love listening to your Scottish history and seeing the beautiful landscape.

I'm Scottish and I love clan history. We're never taught it and only ever told the myths as truth. I personally find it infuriating and saddening the lack of knowledge the population has about such rich history. These are the stories of our ancestors! But they're lost in murky waters. It almost feels as if we're brought up to feel embarrassed about it, so most people choose not to take an interest.

Hi. Very interesting story. Your topics are fine. I am grand child of a Scot who was part of a Scottish expedition to Antartica in the beginning of last century. I was born and raised in Uruguay, along with my 4 brothers and sisters. attended am Irish School in Montevideo, Moved to Argentina 20 years ago. My two kids, Bruce and Fay study in a scottish school here in Buenos Airea, and they play and dance in the school Pipe and scottish dancers band. Being last month to Scotland for the 4th time. The four of us spent a wonderful time in Skye. Lovely channel ypu have. I enjoy it. And it is funny, as I sometimes turn on the tranacriptions, as some terms, accent and name of places are difficult to understand. And even ypu speak very clearly and paused, the automated transcription from youTube brings very weird inrerpretation. Seems that UKposts is not yet ready for scottish accent. Haha. Cheerio! Scottish born and bred until I was in my late twenties when I moved to the United States to work, and finally naturalized in California. I love ALL of your videos and history of Scotland and our interaction with each other and the rest of the world. Some stories and history I am very familiar with as an avid lover of history. It is great in the San Francisco Bay Area where I now live, as there is a large Scottish influence and community here with many places named after Scottish locations such as Ben Lomond, Dumbarton Bridge and many Glen (add valley name here) etc. I first arrived in Pittsburgh, PA and despite living and working in England for a while before arriving in the States, which softened and slowed my Glasgow accent considerably, most people still had difficulty understanding me, lol. I then moved to Long Island, NY where my time in PA allowed me to "adjust" some of my words and phrases so they could understand me a bit better. When I arrived in San Francisco it was like going back to the start and I'd have to repeat myself a lot, but everyone loved the accent and I'd often get people at work just calling me to hear me talk, lol. Overall, everyone in the US has been warm and welcoming to the accent, even if they to the dog head tilt a few times at first, lol.

I was born in Scotland and left when i was young. I've grown up in and still live in America. I love all of the history/stories you tell on your channel. The clans aren't really a priority in my continued learning, but learning about our ancestors and where they ended up after the clearances would be interesting.....p.s. I'd love to hear more clan tales- like the story of the MacLaines and MacLeans and their feuds and complicated family history, or the Kerrs and how a Norman Clan became one of the most prominent on the border- the Marquess of Lothian was the highest ranking noble of the Government side to die at Culloden.

I'm a neighbor from across the pond (two, if you count both directions) and I have enjoyed your history stories for some time. The history of Scotland is tied to the history of the clans, as you pointed out in parts of this video, and hearing a story about them now and then gives a context to many events that we would not have otherwise. I’ve been waiting and hoping you would cover this story Bruce. I live in Northern Ireland and we think our family is from Clan Lamont. There are quite a lot of Clan Lamont sept names in NI. Loved your videos on the debateable lands and the border reivers, as our family also comes from that stock and your coverage of the peoples who made Scotland was fantastic.

The clan histories add great context, and are important to remember, but I've always felt history is a massive canvas and the details are best to add depth to the wider picture. I love how you use things like that to add nuance, which promotes understanding. Also, speaking as an English divel, it's great to learn more about history from these islands that otherwise tends to get lost in the general discourse. You're grand, big man 👍

My father's side are Scottish and my mother's English, I am interested in clans and Scottish history as a whole in the same way I'm interested in English history. I enjoy hearing about traditions and intricate details that get missed when people talk about history. I appreciate your stories as I know in years to come it will help me instill the interest in our hereditary history in my children. I call myself English but I try to connect with my Scottish hereditary as often as possible. Thank you for helping me acheive that

I have traced my Scottish connection (Hogg) back to the 18th century on my mother's father's side and my father's mother's side (Fleming). I am interested in Scottish lore and one story I read in a mobile library in Barrhill was a book by a vicar who visited Scotland and documented Ghost stories. One of them was about the Glencoe massacre and the Glencoe ghosts that inhabit the area. Walkers in that area who have been caught in blizzards would be guided back away from the blizzard by people who would then disappear. I read this book in the early to mid 90's but I don't remember the name of the book or the author.

I'm from California with Scottish roots on my mom's side. I enjoy most all Scottish history especially when taught by Bruce. I don't think you can talk about Scottish history or culture without bringing in the clans, their feuds, and culture. Studying history in general can be just a hobby or pastime or it can be something which can affect our attitudes and our actions. Different people may draw different conclusions from it but hopefully some consensus emerges which leads to a greater understanding of society, our role in it, and how to not repeat mistakes from the past. Keep up the good work Bruce and eventually Ill make it there to see for myself how the events and peoples of Scotland have shaped the world, its culture, and hopefully its future.

Excellent story Bruce! I believe that you tell these stories about the clans so we can all do something we should do every day but in fact, rarely do; learn something from history! Your angle on these stories usually has as much to do with the present as it does with the past and that's what I love about them! All of your stories are compelling this way. Don't ever stop telling them. The world needs to listen!

I'm Scottish and I find these sorts of videos by far my favourites. Love a good historical tale with you out on the scene leading us through. Especially a thing like this, I grew up so close to where this took place and yet I've barely heard the story.

It's always the Campbells lol! I'd love to see you do a video about how the Campbells of Argyll expanded their land and influence. Clan MacTavish is a great example as after the Chief of MacTavish decided to not register his arms with Lord Lyon in the 1790s, the Campbells employed historians to write histories that wrote the MacTavishes as descending from the Campbells and claiming them as a Sept. Even today, though Clan MacTavish has been resurrected with the hereditary Chief since 1997, the Campbells refuse to recognize them as a separate, independent clan

I'm a Scottish viewer, and I think you are right about clan history perhaps being more of interest to international viewers. My favourite videos may generally been those about the Enlightenment / Inventors / Acts of Union etc. Would be nice to see some stuff on 20th Century and urban history though.

I'm Scottish, but I went to school in England so I missed out on a lot of Scottish history growing up. So the mix of stuff is especially good for building my knowledge.

As others here, who went through the Scottish system, have mentioned you didn't miss much... Saying that, when I was in high school, the history I got (early '80's) included; the Romans in Scotland, the impact of feudalism, the power of the Church in Medieval Scotland, the First War of Independence, the Massacre of Glencoe and the '45 (all packed into two years as I didn't take history for O-Grade or Higher).

Hey Bruce, brilliantly informative as always! I'd love if you could next cover the MacDonald V MacLeod fued- one of the few clan conflicts that actually descended into open warfare. The author of an article on clan warfare history posited that it was not as popularly known as MacDonald V Campbell & some of the others- because it was properly a pure Highlands conflict, & it lacked Crown or Lowlands' awareness or intervention. I was actually surprised to learn that most of the clan fueding was little more than decades of simmering tension, with the odd cattle raid or minor skirmish- but very few of their conflicts turned into war. I'd previously had the childish imagining that the Highlands was either like the Wild Wild West, or like Renaissance Italy- & plagued with _vendettas_ ... I'm Australian- & descended of MacDonalds & Scotts

Hi Bruce, I am Scottish and I would love more clan stories. I feel like we never get taught it and even throughout history the Highlands were seen as a place that most lowlanders thought of as others etc however the history of the clans is just as important and sometimes even more interesting. If you could kindly uncover some and share it I would gladly watch. I'm from Ayrshire and stay in East Lothian.

The Clan system is an integral part of Scottish history so a clan story now and again cannot go amiss. As for this story, I remember being told about this on a golf outing to Cowal Golf Club in Dunoon but not about the preceding 'back story' so much appreciative of that extra research by yourself, Bruce. What have I taken from this video? Well, if a Lamont picks a horse to win the Grand National, wait for the Campbell to pick his before you make your own mind up. 😉

I am American and just want to learn what Scottish people want to learn. I have absolutely no connection to Scotland except for a 2-week trip earlier this year. I watch whatever you put up because I trust you to be authentic to Scotland and its history.

I never knew half this stuff until I started listening to the Corries and looked up events they sang about. Being Scottish, I never learnt this type of history at school. So it’s great learning from your vlogs

as an Englishmen, my nan was Scots who married into an english family, she was an Elliot from a long line of Elliots and(renwicks). Id love to some Elliot history please Bruce on the elliot border reivers too. Fantastic as always.

I am an American, both mom and dad were born in Ireland. Long time ago now. I love your stories Bruce, you really are a master at telling them. No matter how I try, i tend to side with the Campbells. I guess I know alot of them and they treated with kindness and respect. I did not know the stories, which may have been a good thing, because I drinks a bit. I could see how one could rile a Campbell.. I would like to hear a story about the good Campbells...

Well I beg to differ. I was new in England in 70's. Stationed near Cambridge. The Campbells ran a pub called the Ancient Druids. They made me feel welcome and gave me a base to branch out from. Great people with warm hearts. There is plenty good about the Campbells. To this day.

I'm one who found out about Scottish link through DNA, and so far have no idea about any ancestors other than those that came from Manchester England and immigrated to the US. Anything you do Bruce is interesting. I love the landscape, the history and the stories. As many other people have said: you make it all come alive. Thank you. Haven't yet been able to say, "in the meantime, let me tell you a story" in my execrable Scottish accent. And I do so want to do this sometime.

Our family are Scottish Americans. Our direct line goes back to Jura, from where our ancestors emigrated in 1739 and 1746. We've got several clans in our family history, so please keep telling the clan stories. However, the videos I have most appreciated are the ones on Scotland's connection with the slave trade (including the one about coal miners!), and the ones with your family's DNA results. Those help me understand this people I have a growing affection for and connection to.

I was just looking into the history around Caithness as there is a castle for sale there called Dunbeath castle and I think there is some content for you there, especially the stories of the earls and lairds around Scotland at the time of Mary Queen of Scotts. One that I think would make a good video, would be on the Master of Caithness John Sinclair, and his father 4th Earl of Caithness George Sinclair. I'll give nothing away, but I'd say it would gives Game of Thrones a run for it's money.

As a Scot I agree with many others here that your clan histories are stories well worth telling. The history of Scotland is so much more rich and nuanced than the black and white "Scottish Patriot v English Oppressor" story that tends to be told...

Been watching fummey for a while now. Defo the best Scottish channel on YT (fandabidozi a close second). Personally i love the channel the way it is. I think that the telling of these stories from all throughout Scottish history makes the channel more about Scotland as a whole rather than about certain clans in certain times. I feel that this happens a lot with Scottish history and that it can lead to the misrepresentation of our history. Bruce manages to keep his channel focused on the history and for that i applaud him! mòran taing

I am a descendent of these Lamonts. What you are talking about in this episode is literally written in my family history. My Lamonts went to northern Ireland and then immigrated to the American colonies. They settled in the southern US states and eventually they became the American pioneers who are my ancestor grandparents. I was wondering when you were going to tell this story.
