Pro Vs DIY Bluetooth Speaker Build!

In this video, I've partnered with Inventables to create some portable Bluetooth speakers! Each speaker represents an opposite end of the spectrum. One is a simple speaker that most DIYers could make in a couple of afternoons and the other is one that a pro might make. They both sound great, they both function the same, but one looks a bit better than the other. Oh, and one lucky viewer will get to take home the pro speaker!

I prefer magnet to magnet as it's self centering, and if you use north on one diagonal and south on the other, you can make the facia repel if it's the wrong way up, which could help if the drivers are positioned off centre

2 Tips from an audio engineer: you dont want magnets near the speaker cause the magnetic field will interfer with the coil. and those wooden grills are likely to produce some high frequent distortion. Make them thiner or better leave them out! Anyways great design!
@lio1234234
@lio1234234 Рік тому
The grills are going to cause all kinds of distortion, not just high frequency. Ideally you'd never use a grill, but these are particularly obstructive, not much to do about the thickness though...
@jonathanwogerbauer2703
@jonathanwogerbauer2703 Рік тому
@@lio1234234 in acoustics every object must be seen as a relation to the wavelength. For waves with long length (bass) the grid is invisible because of diffraction. Therefore you will not have any distortion.

It's the mid and high frequencies that will be most effected by the wood baffles ,a single full range speaker will have a lumpy output at various frequencies that's part of the reason for multi driver array's but that's a whole new can of worms.

Hey Zac, as usual I thoroughly enjoyed the build. Impressed with the design elements - the miters for the box so that the wood grain has continuity, and the bleaching... I've never thought that was an option! Keep up the good work and the passion for building. Probably couldn't expect you to send me a speaker all the way to Botswana.

I often use countersunk magnets and fit one surface mounted on one face, and the opposite face has them in a hole just slightly deeper than the two magnets together so they never actually touch ( you don't want fragments of neodymium coming loose if they connect) Another benefit of this is that the surface magnet gets pulled into the hole like a peg, which is really satisfing and keeps the facia rigidly positioned. Also, if you put a north and a south on the face and the opposite in the holes, you basically magnetically key the facia to only fit one way

The walnut one is beautiful! I've seen walnut bleached with just regular household bleach before and it seems to work pretty well. With the details you put in, I would probably have just dipped the wood into a small container of bleach instead of trying to brush it on. I know I'm months late, but for an inexpensive sprayer I actually picked up a paint sprayer from Harbor Freight to paint my fireplace and have been using it to spray my finishes as well. Think it only ran me about $20 on sale...

@jerichojoe307
@jerichojoe307 2 роки тому
A miter saw is not a fancy tool. Yes there are different grades of them, but basically what you're paying for is fancy bells and whistles. I've seen people get quality cuts out of harbor freight tools. It's all in how you set up and tweak your equipment. But a miter saw is a basic tool kind of a secondary tool if you think about it. Almost all of the cuts that you can make on a miter saw you can make with a lot more precision on a table saw with a properly set fence. Miter saws are borderline obsolete nowadays except when cutting very long material that might be a hassle to work with at a table saw.

Anest Iwata W71-1G (1.0mm / gravity type) plus PC-4S (400c.c paint cup) will do the job for entry level! By the way, for those speakers to sound better, separate the L/R chamber to create 2 x compartments in order to eliminate turbulence and sound pressure from the other speaker. Your current design is based on infinite baffle or sealed enclosure therefore the speaker sensitivity will drop as each speaker has to work harder. For your future speaker cabinet designs, you may consider adding a suitable diameter port + pipe for each of the speakers. The port diameter and pipe length is critical for a narrow but specific low frequency. However, if you prefer infinite baffle/sealed enclosure design, the box has to be bigger than the ones shown in this video. Good luck and wish you all the best!
