Zack Snyder's got dyslexia. His films don't abide to "normal" logic. He's not a randian fascist, anti-LGBTQ+ capitalist. His logic and connections to ideas are unique. His films are about the nature of stories themselves. The films that Maggie's talking about are the stories inside Zack's metanarrative. His films are streets ahead. He makes films inside films inside films. Maggie's treating his films as if he's not doing that and what he's showing is true. Also, many people, including me, think that Snyder's Superman symbolised autism acceptance and personal growth. Snyder never treats Clark badly for his autism like the creators do to Sheldon in TBBT. Instead, Snyder creates a good representation of it through Superman in the DCEU (like Abed in Community).

The one thing I will say is leftist ideology concerns the majority, and right wing ideology ostensibly concerns the individual, in this way we might see how the conservative convinces themselves a singularly conservative perspective is the opinion of a lone individual, where the leftist ideology is one of a nebulous collective. Most of us can only go so far in our tolerance for focus tested commercial art, anyway. So as hypocritical as their stance is, it may be different enough in their mind to justify itself.

I got into an argument with a Snyder-fan, when I compared StarWarsTheory's giving carte Blanche for his fans to harass his critics to Snyder's complete refusal to do anything about his own fans going after James Gunn. I apparently was wrong because Snyder had called out the fandom menace. I replied that doesn't really mean anything, because the fandom menace is just a bunch anti-fans and shooting them down is a no-brainer, we're talking about actual fans of a work, not people who make hating something their personality. Then I linked a thread of snyder-fans defending his work, told him to count how many are defending his graphic description of sexual violence as art, while at same time hammering the point that James Gunn is a pedo over tweets and to report back to me. I got blocked 😂 so I guess there were a lot of them.

Looking back on that infamous interview, where he said Watchmen was "his scene," because of the sex and violence, I don't think Snyder's conscious of a lot off these ideas. The surface politics? Sure he flaunts those. But the deeper stuff about death and empathy? Probably just thinks of it as cool dialogue for badass heroes to say. And honestly that's kind of sadder than thinking of him as a propagandist. Instead, he could be considered a kind of zombie himself, in the Romero mold, marching mindlessly, following toxic instincts instilled by a culture whose influence he'll never awaken to. @futurestoryteller 3 роки тому
@@jyotektosgaimur I know a lot of people were upset that he infantilized and sexualized women, putting them in sexually provocative outfits. Some people made the case (including Snyder) that the sexualization is at least partially satirical. I noted however that this would be more convincing to me if the women had more personality, and visually if they were increasingly less objectified as the movie progressed, forcing the audience to confront them as people, and not as "action dolls." But you can weaponize anything. Perhaps if that were done people would argue that the film was suggesting that women have no humanity unless they cover up. Snyder himself called the film "fetishization" so if it's satire it would also be self-critique, and he does not appear to be a particularly self-aware person.
@jyotektosgaimur
@jyotektosgaimur 3 роки тому
@@futurestoryteller how do you know he's not self aware? Almost all of his films are super meta. The film in question deals with the nature of stories. It builds on from 300, which is about how humanity looks up to archetypes and simple ideologies for inspiration but in turn lose their sense of self. Watchmen is about lifting the wool off our eyes to see the corruption of these heroes we once cherished. LotG also delves into this idea by saying how stories are twisted and makes us alienate each other. SP is about letting go of stories, seeing them as a mental prison. Baby Doll is the amalgamation of Sweat Peas imagination as she's stuck in the stories, they're constricting her from becoming who she is. When she lets go of Baby Doll, she escaped and learnt to embrace reality, she chooses to become who she truly is, not what everyone wanted to be. When I refer to the idea of stories, I include beliefs and myths as a part of it. He's saying why stories are extensions of our own narcissism and are regressive. We should let them go. I believe that Snyder was going to turn it around or build on it with his DCEU, but studio meddling and capitalism prohibited it from coming to fruition.

"Make everyone around Batman as dark and brooding as he is even if it doesn't fit their characters" was apparently Snyder's plan for the DCEU. @Zahaqiel
@Zahaqiel 3 роки тому
@@Xehanort10 In the case of Superman, Snyder is actually taking a pre-existing storyline from comics (after Crisis on Infinite Earth - reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Zod#Modern_Age ) where main universe Superman *did* kill pocket universe versions of Zodd, Quex-Ul and Zaora, and in a more screwed up way (slowly killed them with kryptonite after taking their powers from them) for possibly worse reasons (they'd already killed everyone but even though he'd taken their powers they apparently still might have come after him, so they had to die? also he was following through on a death sentence placed on them by Krypton that wasn't carried out... which is a convenient way to offload personal responsibility). In that storyline, the experience of doing that so affected Superman that he swore never to kill ever again. Snyder fixes a lot of what was nonsense about that plotline by making there be actual stakes and allowing Superman to act *before* everyone dies and also removing the convenient appeal to Kryptonian authority to sidestep Superman's own responsibility in killing Zodd... but then removed Superman's "I don't want to do that again" moment and also places it in a much crappier overall plot framing. Personally I find that a bit frustrating because Maggie's right that Snyder can't allow characters to actually improve, even in the instances when he clears out the BS excuses for crappy behaviour from previous versions of the same story. He takes what ought to be a "I couldn't see another option then but I want to make sure there will be other options in the future" story and turns it into a "I couldn't see another option because there isn't one and that's how it is" story.

CJ from Dawn of the Dead - Learns the lesson of trusting others. Sacrificed himself to save Ana and the other to get to the Yacht. King Leonidas of 300 - Learns the lesson of not giving up against all odds. Died heroic death along with his men that turned the tide of war with the Persian Empire. Bruce Wayne in BvS - Learns to trust Superman as he realize he's much like a human too (Martha scene), which in turn causes him to regain his morality. Yet you thought they didn't learn and grow at the end their movies? Are you sure about that? And most of his characters are even 1:1 faithful copies of their comics counterpart (300, Watchmen, Man of Steel).

Now listen, I'm not going to say Zack Snyder is a fascist, or even that his movies necessarily have fascist ideology. What I'll do is paste here the 11th of 14 aspects typical of fascism identified by Umberto Eco in his essay 'Ur-Fascism. "In such a perspective everybody is educated to become a hero. In every mythology the hero is an exceptional being, but in Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death. It is not by chance that a motto of the Falangists was Viva la Muerte (in English it should be translated as “Long Live Death!”). In non-fascist societies, the lay public is told that death is unpleasant but must be faced with dignity; believers are told that it is the painful way to reach a supernatural happiness. By contrast, the Ur-Fascist hero craves heroic death, advertised as the best reward for a heroic life. The Ur-Fascist hero is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death."

As a lesbian, I assume I'll be hate-crimed by zombies.
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 3 роки тому
Well, George A. Romero, the godfather of the zombie genre, was a total hippie, and in his movie, Land of the Dead we see two lesbians making out, before they're immediately dispatched by a zombie hoard. This may be justified by Romero's insistence that zombies represent societal change. Saying the thing people don't get is that "the zombies are the _heroes_ of my movies!" To be one is to be equal, I suppose. When you think about it, despite their hideous appearance and insatiable lust for human flesh, the idea of a shambling person, otherwise going about their business, trying to eat, and perhaps procreate, in order to live for as long as possible... until men with guns, in military fatigues, come along and callously shoot them in the head - until or unless there are enough of them to overpower the might of the armed forces, is a pretty on the nose metaphor for "power to the people." But you can see how, when death of the author applies, it just seems like these lesbians got hate-crimed by some zombies. That's the thing that's weird about Zack Snyder to me, if he wasn't trying to adapt an Ayn Rand novel, I'm not sure people would recognize him as a conservative tool. My best guess before that was that he's kind of adolescent, and maybe not very bright.

The first time I saw Pa Kent telling Clark that he maybe should’ve let his friends and peers die in the trailer for “Man of Steel,” I assumed there was going to be some kind of context. I thought that surely Pa would go on to say something along the lines of how it’s important to try to save everybody, even if it’s impossible. Silly me! I’m an older single cis het woman, so I think I would first appear weeping copiously, clutching at the shirt hem of the icy male hero, begging him to save me. He would shove me off contemptuously and stride away. My actual death wouldn’t be shown, but my bloodied corpse would be shown in gratuitous detail later as an ironic callback. There would be a close-up of my severed hand wrapped around a gun, showing clearly that I hadn’t realized how to release the safety. If I were in Sucker Punch, I wouldn’t die. I would instead be a meek orderly, scurrying to and fro, doing the doctor’s bidding. I would be both the target of sexual mockery by the male staff and a sexual plaything for them. I would be wearing the heavy makeup and false eyelashes of Babydoll and Co., but in my raddled decrepitude, I would look more like Baby Jane. I would warn the main quintet of how impossible escape was, heavily implying that I was a former patient and failed escapee.

I was so confused when I watched Watchmen the first time, because of how little emphasis the news stand guy and the comic book kid got. In the original their death was what made me cry, because it made the destruction of New York seem personal. With the idea of oppressive nihilism it makes more sense that they'd be all but written out. The only people who matter are the heroes, and even they only matter when they're fighting. When I finally went back and read it again, I sat back and was totally stunned at just how WRONG he got it. I'll never forget the interview on the 300 bluray where Snyder and Frank Miller are talking, Snyder says something about the process of adapting someone else's story and Miller jokes, "How are you gonna do Watchmen?" Snyder chuckles and just says, "Very carefully...." 🙄 The point you make about self sacrifice in his movie and how he tried to fill Rorschach's death with such importance and meaning really hit home for me. His death is meant to be pointless and stupid. "I didn't get my way so I can't live in this world! Do it! Kill me!" It's a stupid and messed up line of thinking and Snyder seems to actually support it. He gets it soooo wrong.

It's a pretty sickening movie for survivors. There is no healing process. Babydoll learns to embrace her trauma, but she doesn't learn how to resolve it and live the life of her choosing. Instead the resolution is that she (the protagonist, the one we most relate to) accepts that she's not one of the lucky ones. Her "freedom" is the acceptance that terrible things have happened and will continue to happen to her until her death. The entire movie builds up to normalizing suffering, and portraying death or insanity as the only escape (which, I have to mention, is an unkind and false equivalence for insane folks, but sadly a common one). Real people need to learn how to heal so that they can get on with life, but in Snyder's world, that part never happens.

Shooting Jimmy Olsen in such an unceremonious way kind of perfectly sums up why I don’t like those movies, outside of the awful theming. His movies seem to have a contempt for Superman, the idea that someone could just be good, someone could want to help people no matter how small the problem feels like a fantasy for him. That’s why he had to “deconstruct” Superman by making him actively worse. Superman can’t have a silly photographer boy to hang around with, that would make him seem human.

Don't forget: One of Snyder's big dreams is to do a film adaptation of Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead." Which is, of course, one of her books on the subject of why Great Men should be allowed to do anything they want, and the stupid teeming masses shouldn't get in their way. It certainly seems to be on-brand for him. (Oh, and it fetishizes rape too.) . Personally, I hope he does it, because what results will be one of the most amazing cinematic clusterfucks of all time. Not to mention the delicious irony in seeing Rand's work being adapted by exactly the sort of mediocre "second-hander" that she wrote The Fountainhead to denounce...
@futurestoryteller
@futurestoryteller 3 роки тому
Cold Crash has a video on why he owns a copy of The Fountainhead, it's conceivable, if *_highly_* unlikely that Snyder's desire to direct an adaptation of the novel is not as an endorsement of Rand's philosophy. After all Verhoeven did Starship Troopers. He seems to think his Superman movies are deconstructionist, and Sucker Punch is feminist, if he's a satirist though, he's pretty terrible at it, even when you're fully aware that satire does not _need_ to be funny. (That's a misconception some people have.)

I’m so confused by Zack Snyder’s idea of Christianity: ‘We’re already dead’ isn’t particularly wrong, I guess-there is scripture about being ‘dead in sin’, but the idea of redemption is absolutely absent from his movies, the ‘born again’ part. You know? Redemption? That thing Jesus did?? Snyder seems to think Christianity is wholly based on the wrath of the Old Testament God and has nothing to do with the love and compassion ol’ JC was preaching.

It's also interesting considering all the Jesus symbolism he's doing with Superman. I think it would kind of fit if there was more of the redemption stuff. Superman is supposed to be a role model teaching people how to be better, you know like Jesus. And yet, Snyder sticks to shallow symbolism while ignoring the most obvious parallel.
@Tareltonlives
@Tareltonlives 3 роки тому
Well, it's a sad part of fundamentalism; it doesn't matter how much you sin in life-if you swear allegiance to the flag of Jesus you will go to heaven. Being born again simply means that dying isn't a big deal. Why should we worry about war or plague or environmental destruction or poverty? Life is temporary, people you don't like are doomed to eternal torment, and you're just biding your time until death so just have some fun with life. It's okay to be selfish; God wants it that way To say it's a perversion of Christianity is an understatement. Remember, a lot of people have the Bible in one hand and Ayn Rand's works in the other; they use their bad theology to justify bad sociology
