Stationed at Spangdahlem AFB in 1961, my first motorcycle was a 1955 Zundapp 600, a former Polizei machine. A coworker also had one, but I am not sure what model year it was. He was from a German-speaking family in Pennsylvania and soon found himself feeling at home in the Eifel. He told me that one of the local farmers showed him a sidecar rig like the one shown in this video. He kept it hidden in his barn, and told Earl that he rode it home from the war. As for me, learning to ride motorcycles in the Eifel during that unusually hot and dry summer was a wonderful experience.

I was bribed into finally swapping my bike for a hot rod, but the Zündapp I would break that deal for. I spent 3 glorious years stationed in Augsburg and riding one through that region is something that I will happily be doing in the afterlife.

My Father had one of these he got from another GI on the Air Force Base "Mather AFB" Sacramento, Ca. 1957. I would ride on the tank and he would open it up on the old airplane runways on the base.

Amazing. You could actually have the bike and sidecar drive by themselves.

A old timer that lived near me passed and had two of these in his workshop around half to two thirds complete. I wish I had bought them. This is in the US by the way. Much more rare here.
