I agree that the individual technologists and even the companies themselves are not evil. It has been my experience that developer tend to be people that look for solutions to problems, but are often naive to the real world implications to their technical solutions. I remember back in the first internet bubble days, so many companies where looking at providing online access to your medical records and all the benefits that can provide, but were completely ignoring all the obvious downsides to having such sensitive data, so close to the edges. We now know that systems are not nearly as strong as we once hoped and that a solution from one point of view can offer great benefit, but from another point of view can offer great risk. I think all the many technologies that come around and become the most desired VC buzzwords, go through this initial goldrush period, before the darkside of each technology is explored. That has been an achilles heel of the tech bro economy. Even the people you'd think would be greatly concerned with the downsides or dark sides of the latest tech craze, don't seem to concern themselves. It is how all these bubbles keep inflating and eventually bursting. Even the "guardians at the gates" seem unbothered by the approach hordes.

Not only do we need to support open source, but our economic system needs to change. Without changes to the economic system, as shown in the video with the trickle down illustrations, it doesn't matter what we do in the open source realm, if companies are allowed to sell us on a "Star Trek" future but actively work to deliver a "Hunger Games" or "Blade Runner" future, we are all doomed. This doom is not the product of AI technology, it is the product of greed and capitalism. Every technology that increases worker productivity can be thrown into the same bucket as AI, where the bosses use these technologies to increase profit, via increase in worker productivity, without delivering any benefit for the worker. In fact, quite the opposite. As worker productivity increases, less and less workers will eventually be needed, increasing unemployment and lowering the negotiation power of the worker, due to surplus in the workforce. This adds up to a downward spiral for the worker. The worker should not be in a position to hope that the bosses trickle down benefit. The workers should be the bosses. In other words, corporations should not be shareholder owned, they should be worker owned and the benefit to the workers, for increased worker productivity, should be decided, based upon, what is good for the worker and what is good for the business, in that order. This model still does not completely address the issue with companies eventually shedding workers, due to maximally increase worker productivity. Something needs to be done about the worker that find themselves out of a job, simply due to the advancement of technology. This problem should be solved through two avenues. 1. an ever decreasing number of hours required from workers, on a day/week/month basis, without a decrease in pay. This would allow employees to keep their jobs but benefit from lower working hours and slowing the shedding of workers due to increased productivity and increase in unemployment. 2. As mentioned in the video, an establishment of a UBI system that has a tie to certain economic metrics, that allows for the UBI to be a liveable amount, without the risk of lagging behind the overall economy or allowing politicians to use it as a bargaining chip.

The top 1% rich will be super-duper rich while basically everyone lives in poverty and slums. If other AI companies outsmart OpenAI, it's going to have devastating consequences. Having sufficient capital can maintain its leading position in the industry. The development of AI is only restricted by computational power and energy. For the good of humanity, CloseAI would be optimal.

OpenAI shoud definitely change their name as they are NOT "Open". However I will defend their decision not to publish source code. AI is a MASSIVE force multiplier for anyone who wants to accomplish anything whether their goals are benign or malign, and freely publishing the source code for that would be equivalent to publishing instructions for how to build a dirty bomb on the cheap, except with the potential for much, MUCH worse consequences.

It's alredy on the local job level for artists because a film festival event in my area used AI to make the art for their poster, and it is ant the corperate level because Disney used AI to make the art in their latest marvel show. I still wanna learn web design so im going to minor in coding that way i have another job option.

of course Amazon's shop AI doesn't work properly, but do they care? it takes care of 30% of checkouts, then the rest are processed by people being paid Indian-level wages rather than, say NYC, SF, Copenhagen, Paris etc wages. Expect to see a LOT more of this in the future.

Only problem I have with this video (everything was extemely informative) is suggesting policy makers want to regulate Ai to protect us. No. Look up Palantir. As a companies goal is to increase revenue a governemnt's goal is to increase it's power. The employees of both want to further their careers. The balance to these forces besides the mercy of God himself is people teaming up to stop them. Ai certainly is going to be leveraged by policy makers to increase surveilance and power in line with the consesus of our corrupt establishment. Yeah Ai isn't here to make people's lives easier, it's being funded to replace you in the workforce. That's the real narrative, and it won't be a Utopia for anyone but those controlling the companies that have used Ai to replace you.
