Thank you, I've been without power for 5 days now with 2 kids because everyone I called was refusing responsibility, now I know it's my building manager, I'll be getting them told again. Thank you.

Thanks for the info , i have got myself one solder melting pot when i start to use it i will do an initial power up test & also an "Opening up" to see if all looks ok inside . TIP about the solder bar : I found that scarring ( making a week point )the solder bar with a beefy cutter and then using a vise to wiggle forth and back the bar . the bar broke into smaller manageable pieces with zero loss of material and no mess to pick up as a saw would have , Cheers . Excuse mon english still working on it !

Any update on earthing safety caused by open PEN with TN-C-S at home. I ask as there are many more EVs now with outside charge points. Have the safety issues been resolved without resorting to a huge earth mat?
@jwflame3 дні тому
Nothing has been resolved. Not possible to fix broken TN-C-S networks without replacing them.

👍👍👍Definitely the best explanation of this that I've ever seen! I was thinking about how to set up a demonstration of Diverted Neutral Current in a 3 phase system where only a single phase supply is available to run the demonstration - I think I've worked out a way to get an isolated low voltage 3 phase supply from a single phase input with a reasonable power capacity at reasonable cost - let me know if you're interested. Would be great to demonstrate with safe low voltages some of the weird, wonderful and lethal things that can happen with Diverted Neutral Current in a 3 phase system.

As you compared the two types, it would be interesting to know if the 3 wire version can be used in a specific configuration to replace the 4 wire version. 4 of the one you stripped down are fitted on the back of my house and the last recently failed. They connect to a Racal Guardall RLC1 Light Control Unit indoors to select for sensor/night-time/permanent-on with a sliding adjustor. The permanent-on setting still switches them on, but the sensors no longer trigger the lights. I imagine the missing yellow (faded to white) wire may possibly be the darkness output and wondered if it was removed from newer PIRs because it is instead controlled on the sensor itself with a dial? Also does the new one operate with the same voltage?

As it made those fizzling noises connected up to the limited power output of an insulation tester I began to wonder how it would cope with a high voltage spike on the incoming mains and reflect on whether it got through compliance testing by the skin of its teeth...

You've convinced me to not use one of these screwdriver thingys. I'll use a neutral/live probe from now on. On the subject of neutral/live why don't they call it positive and negative since that's what a voltage crosses, electronics is so overly confusing with terminologies.

Is it sufficient to remove the fuse from the board? Is it safe to assume there's no power in that instance?
@jwflame6 днів тому
Removing the fuse will isolate L, however you must never assume anything - test to ensure it was really disconnected.

Can any Line and Neutral connections be interchanged on a 4 pole SPD? Have to replace one which has N in left side but available one has N on left side. Would make wiring easier if I could use one L as Neutral connections and use the Neutral connections as L.
@why_do_you_want_to_know7 днів тому
Sorry meant old has Neutral connections on Left side and new has Neutral connections on Right side.
@jwflame6 днів тому
If all 4 cartridges are identical then you can - however most are not, those used for N-E are different from those for L-E

Can you make a video about potential differences and high voltage imbalance between neutral and phase wires when the normal voltage 230 increases to more than 300 volt between any phase with neutral? The causes and solutions to this fault.
@Mr2Xri7 днів тому
Hell Mr. John, if you please could you or someone else answer me in two queries? What was the benefit (at TN-S system) of the old cables with lead shield to come directly in contact with the earth? Maybe in the case where the cable were being cut accidently the property will still had earth connection (the earth itself will connect the two pieces of the broken cable)? Also, at TN-CS system what is the reason of multiple connections (at 10:48 min) between Neutral and Ground; maybe if the cable were being cut at some point the houses that are connected after the cutting point will still have Earth Ground connection and from now on because the only return path for the current to return will be the Ground earth the result will be a breaker or fuse or RCD to triggered immediately. So in practical this a way of detection a cut cable and to avoid a house to stay without Ground Earth (PE); because of the triggering of the breakers the properties don't have electricity and consequently the electric company must necessarily to repair the break cable? Am I right in my hypothesis or I misunderstood/missing something?
@jaakkooksa53747 днів тому
5:45 why would a person get electrocuted in this scenario when we understand that at any moment in time the electrical potential of the surrounding ground and the electric potential of the earth electrode are essentially the same?

Hi JW, On pin 9 when both stats call for heat, why doesn't the voltage from both valves either add to create 440v assuming they are in phase or cancel to 0v if there's a 180deg phase shift introduced, with the first point being most likely.
@tomscum618 днів тому
What a lot of negative comments. It's a good demonstration JW. Thank you . It seems like some people can't think like a layman or like a professional. My 9 year old got it no worries.

Excellent tutorial. I've seen tens of English retards trying to be funny and entertaining from which actually you can't understand anything, but this guy is a real engineer. It's ridiculous how in the UK a plumber or electrician is branded as "an engineer". I've studied electrical engineering and our lecturer once said that it's an insult for a real engineer to call a welder with the same name.

So CNE was not progress, it may have saved money on cable but has introduced real danger - let's just ignore it shall we and pretend it's not really an issue. Plastic Gas pipes it must be then! How the hell do the DNO diagnose and find the issue location ?
@mike81403112 днів тому
That’s interesting, i never knew that, but what exactly causes that problem like fundamentally? When you get specific, what is it about dc voltage that is different? And im not referring to the obvious here where 60 hz cycles on and off 60 times a second, im saying there must be more to it than that, right?
@jwflame10 днів тому
It's the obvious thing - AC voltage goes to zero 120 times every second so arcs are easy to break. DC is on at full voltage 100% of the time.
@Mark-ij2nh13 днів тому
It's only continuity you need to remove lamps as it affects the resistance reading not insulation resistance as you just test between the bars and breakers on the board

Is it possible to simply use a smart mini wi-fi switch to connect across a central heating programmer to switch heating on/off remotely using an app?
@jwflame13 днів тому
Yes, programmers are just switches, so pretty much any switch can be used, smart or not.
@Skelton199614 днів тому
Is there no programmer used with combi boilers?
@jwflame13 днів тому
There can be, however most recent installations would have a combined timer/thermostat. Older ones usually had a timer built into the boiler itself with an external thermostat. However entirely possible to have a separate programmer/timer and thermostat wired external to the boiler as shown here: flameport.com/electric/central_heating/combination_boilers_programmer.cs4
