Thank you for making these tutorials , they are very much appreciated. My son bought me a 3018 CNC machine for Christmas. I'm 78 yard old "What do I want with that machine" I have taken out the expletives. Watching your videos has given my a lot of confidence in trying out various projects to try. Please keep making then . Stay Safe. Bill M8-) Scotland.

Awesome tutorial Paul! Can you tell me on average how long the cycle time to make a finished part is?
@kelsres3 місяці тому
Thank you. Time was not an issue for me but after creating the toolpaths in Carveco I could carve and finish two pawns in a day. The larger figures took about a day and a half.

Thanks Vernon. I do tend to stutter my way through my videos but get there in the end. I’d love to have a Genmitsu rotary axis and can’t wait for Carveco to publish there tutorials !

Thanks Vernon it's been a lot more complex than the Egyptian one ! I spent ages with Meshmixer editing the STL files so they could be carved and I intend to do a video of the different methods I used.

Amazing work, great kudos to you for learning and sharing. I still have to polish my 2 sided carves. Always about 0.5mm out, getting there slowly.
@kelsres10 місяців тому
Thanks John I also had to make adjustments as I progressed. I’m beginning to carve another chess set but this time I am adding extra material to the bottom of my 3D stl model using Meshmixer. This way I’ve got some extra wood so I can adjust the tip of the finish bit before it reaches the model itself !

Hi Paul Thanks for the video and have wanted to make my own set like yours but have had trouble lining the sides up so did follow along with your example and front and back turned out quite good - used a 6.35mm end mill and a 1.5mm tapered ball nose as finisher - but had the same problem ass before when machining the sides in that the 1.4mm ball nose always wants to cut into the front or back so destroys them - any suggestions on how to overcome this? thanks Kerry
@kelsresРік тому
Thanks Kerry I'm glad you're having a go ! The bits I used were smaller than yours, 3mm end mill for the rough cut and .75mm tapered ball nose for the finish. I made a lot of firewood before I finally got the finishes that I wanted. I found that it was better to rough cut the front and back only then run the finish bit on the two sides only but some of the chess pieces needed the finish on all four sides. Take great care to get the Z height correct and you may need to set it a fraction high to begin with. Practice with the pawns first as they are the smallest and faster to carve. Good luck !
@user-ml6dg5sr7oРік тому
@@kelsres Hi Paul thanks for the help and after a couple of disasters I did work out how to do it and have since carved two of the bishops with great success - I used the 6mm end mill and the 1.5mm tapered ball nose and took approx 16 minutes to rough each side and approx 1 hour to finish each side so now will apply the same design to the others thanks again Kerry
@kelsresРік тому
@@user-ml6dg5sr7o thank you and I'm pleased that you're enjoying it. Once I had understood how the carving should be I did take great care when starting the finishing cuts. I use the UGS platform and am able to slow the feed rate right down to 10% for the very first plunge then increase it as the cutting progresses. Also you may need to make tiny adjustments to the position of the job origin just to make sure that each side lines up perfectly with its opposite side.

Thank you for the tutorial Paul, as soon as my CNC arrives I will be setting up Carveco and making my own chess set.
@kelsresРік тому
Thank you and there is a lot of great advice on Carveco’s website.
@Townie001Рік тому
It is a beautiful set ,but I thought you were going to design the pieces in carveco not just import.
@kelsresРік тому
Thank you for your comment. In order to create my carvings a STL file, Standard Triangle Language, is needed and you can't create STl files in Carveco ! This type of file is made with dedicated creation software such as Meshmaker or Fusion 360. What I have done is basically carved a 2.5d relief on one face then rotated my wood so that the end result is a 3d carving. To do true 3d carving will require a 4th axis to rotate the wood as it carves. This is something I am looking into.
@Townie001Рік тому
@@kelsres Thank you. I thought carvco had design capabilities,as well as rotation.
@kelsresРік тому
@@Townie001 it certainly does for some relief carvings and I think the full version of Carveco covers some aspects of 4axis but this only relates to what's known as wrap around carving.
