Okay to clear up the which myth is correct mess and the question of Medusa being born a Monster or being a victim. The original Medusa story is in the Theogony by Hesiod written around 700 BCE (BC). Hesiod was a greek and contemporary of Homer. And as respected and beloved as Homer. Medusa was a vile monster a gorgon since birth together with her two sisters (Her two sisters were immortal but Medusa was mortal, note: mortal doesnt mean human) All three were the daughters of Phorcys and Ceto (minor sea gods both). Medusa was a Monster but had a consentual relationship with Poseidon. She was killed by Perseus on the orders of Tritogenaia (Athena) and out of her body after her head was removed sprang Pegasos and Chrysaor (A human like being with a golden sword not a boar) the sons of Poseidon. If you look at pre-classical attic pottery youll see how horrible Medusa looked, so Poseidons standards were pretty low lol. The story of the rpe and Transformation was written by the roman poet Ovid (note i noticed in the commentsection people calling him a historian, no he was a poet) a contemporary of Emperor Augustus and a former friend. So Ovid was a roman and lived 700 years after Hesiod. I noticed too that people say he hated generally authority or even the greeks or that he was banished from Greece or Athens specifically or something. No he fell out of favour with Emperor Augustus, cause of political and personal reasons, he was banished from Rome the eternal city to a wooden shack on the danube river. *Ovids work the Metamorphoses* were a political and allegorical work. He stated himself that the gods were metaphors for Emperor Augustus and the imperial regime and the "victims of the gods" were suppossed to be him Ovid himself and his family (which was allowed to stay in the eternal city). No the Metamorphoses cannot be considerd Greek Mythology (it was also written in roman latin) but also not Roman Mythology cause the offical roman religion hated him for this work and around the common people greek Hesiod was the standard (Hesiod in old greek Hesiodos was known to the romans as Esiodus). The greeks werent bothered by him so much as the romans were bothered by him. The greeks saw every work not written in greek or from a not greek author as generally inferior to greek work. They saw Vergil for example just as a poor copy of "our great Homer". At the end the Metamorphoses were a political work trying to subtily insult Emperor Augustus. It would have been a part of Mythology if it was a religious work, it was just a allegorical work. There is another version of Medusas story written by the *greek* "Apollodoros The Other" in the so called "Library of Apollodoros". Apollodoros states there that Medusa was human girl (not even a priestess) who once boasted that she was more beautiful than Athena, so Athena punished her for the Hubris (pride against the gods) and turned her into a gorgone. Her thing with Poseidon afterwards was still consentual.
