While ULA keeps trying to successfully launch Starliner once SpaceX is well along developing its competitor Starship. You shouldn't compare Starliner with Falcon, I understand the difference in payload capacity and capability is too vast. But it's noteworthy that until Starliner can complete just one mission even one that is very minimal Starliner isn't in the game at all.

Clearly I don't know you, but surely this has to be impacting your personal life. The same way that it affects flat earthers. Am I incorrect in thinking that only the second stage (landing back on Earth) needs protection from excessive high temperature? If so, why construct stage one (or for that matter the Moon landing version of stage two) using heavyweight stainless steel? The Moon landing version can either remain at the surface or be placed in Moon orbit. Construct stage one and the Moon landing stage two using carbon fiber. That way, surely the use of orbital refueling can be minimized (if not eliminated altogether).
@simonschaller857

Just using steel is way more practical, they dont have the expertise or equipment for something else and carbon fiber isnt light enouth to not refuel it if they changed the material of the lunar starship they could as well construct something completely new

This plan doesn't sound feasible without major modifications. The fuel won't be homogenously distributed in the tank, so how control what ends up in the Target, and what remains for reentry? Also, with a pressure based system, refueling would become more and more inefficient. Unless they use different Starship designs with higher pressures at later stages. But for that, separate fuel tanks would be necessary. It shouldn't be an issue to put a high pressure fuel tank in the compartment section. But ideally, why not combine those approaches so that there's no fuel sloshing issue anymore by using separate tanks for separate stages? It doesn't add more complexity in terms of additional technology required, only in terms of managing fuel flow. It might also be beneficial to have fuel redundancies, just as with the engines.

@@colonbina1 Sure, since Starship isn't staging or refuelling after leaving LEO (at least not for now), its dry mass must be extremely small (below 100 metric tonnes) in order to fly the full HLS mission. That might turn out to be more challenging than the refilling.

Refueling is very necessary for reaching the moon and beyond, because they want to have a smaller starship that isn't too heavy for lift off and for price, and re-usability Edit: so if the rocket is too heavy they will need stronger boosters which they will need to be able to handle that much heat so they won't explode I believe, which don't quote me on this but I think that's what the heat shield is used for, also increasing overall price

The bigger question is if those 2 astronauts for the manned flight test are worried at all. Boeing in general has been far less than stellar in their safety and reliability (including Starliner). Boeing is a bloated mess of a company used to getting a pass for cost overruns, waste, etc. SpaceX has not been perfect, but they take every failure and learn from it to make the next launch better. They've exceeded the proposed launch cadence for the STS system by a lot and have a far better safety record.

Why does the force of gravity change so abruptly when we leave the atmosphere?
@wally7856
@wally7856 19 годин тому
It doesn't. It slowly lowers with distance from the planet exactly like a light bulb slowly gets dimmer as you walk away from it. Where the international space station is there is still 90% of the gravity that you feel at sea level. If you weight 100 lbs here on Earth and there was a "stationary" platform where the space station is - you would still weigh 90 lbs on that platform. The reason they don't "feel" gravity there is because the ISS isn't stationary, it is in orbit around the Earth. They orbit every 90 minutes so their centrifugal force that wants to fling them outward is EXACTLY the same as the gravity wants to pull them inward. Think of a merry-go-round that wants to fling you out and gravity wants to pull you in. Balance the 2 forces and they cancel and you feel weightless. That is why to get to orbit you have to travel at 17,500 MPH sideways to stay up there. Without that centrifugal force you would fall back down just like you threw a rock up into the air. In fact, that is how they get back down to Earth. The just slow down a little bit and that reduces their centrifugal outward force and gravity pulls them back down. Remember; it is Earths gravity that holds the Moon in place and the Moons gravity that affects the tides and the Sun's gravity that holds the Earth in place - look how far away those 2 objects are and their gravity still works all the way over here.

I guess it’s always a matter of aesthetic preference in the end but I have always thought the SpaceX suit is surprisingly something put together by cash strapped effects designers for a B sci-fi movie from the 60s, ie a poor man’s view of what a future suit might look like a bit like Hardy Amiss’s take on Air Stewardess outfits on the shuttle in 2001, a film otherwise brilliant I might add, but it perhaps deserved better than the Queen’s favourite and rather old hat conservative designer trying to be ‘modern’ which is how the SpaceX suit looks to me, did Musk influence it I wonder? Oh and it seems to make everyone look fat and to my eye far from sleek, esp that weird looking helmet that’s escaped from the Dr Who props Dept though if it works well who cares about the weird look. At first sight the Boeing suit looks far better, efficient, modern practical and fit for function, over the bargain basement put together ‘whatever mis matched bits we could find in the nearest costume store to look different’ approach. But hey I’m judging looks over the possible functionality so in that regard it might indeed be better, though I will take views from non SpaceX fan boy UKposts channels as well on that one so as to try to make a balanced objective judgement.
