5 years late, yet thought it was interesting. I am from India. Have lived in the US for over 20 years and the UK for under 4 years. Indeed hilarious Farid thinks an order of sorts that brought Europe together is either international or liberal. Was neither. The bankruptcies one by one of many EU nations is sufficient evidence. Moreover, the rules imposed on these bankrupt EU nations by the economic powerhouses of the EU demonstrate the illiberal nature of that order. As far as rules go, the rules are for the less mighty made up by the mighty. Farid also makes the fundamental mistake of equating the economic gain that led to a middle class in India or China to some sort of major emancipation the middle class in these two countries has gone through. Absolutely not! He’s also made the same mistake about Poland saying its GDP has risen 5x since it joined the EU. The EU centric order has only been able to put some money into the hands of a total of 500 million middle class people in China and India. But not been able to hand these 500 million the freedom of the sort David Hume and Adam Smith envisioned. That’s because up to this day, the supercilious liberal class that boasts of a liberal order has never really understood what “liberal” means. They’ve never tried to understand liberal from the point of view of the individual, rather they have always meant liberal as in we all must agree with everyone. Sort of like controlling an individual’s thought process, no different than the attitude of leaders such as Xi, Modi or Putin. Lastly, Farid tends to mix things with the ease of an amateur. Perhaps, with no ulterior motives. Even so, being fully aware of the Monroe doctrine, he equates the inclusion of Ukraine in the EU to its inclusion in NATO! Of course, Niall Ferguson was the winner hands down! I like that Niall interprets data well. Stats have to be interpreted well for what they are trying to tell us. Merely quoting them is not saying much. For example he correctly points out the incessant turmoils in East and Southeast Asia and in the third world. While Farid points to a chart that merely presents a reducing trend in the number of conflicts in terms of the killings. Think of the Bangladesh war which saw close to 10 million refugees come into India and living in dire circumstances, the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990’s, or the various wars in former Yugoslavia that lasted a decade, to name a few. Farid’s got to be kidding, sitting in the most convenient place in the world and not even able to experience the terrible sufferings of all these people. What’s worse is to clumsily misrepresent this suffering as slight deviations from the intended normal liberal rules based international order and to say that on there has been some gain on balance across the globe. No way! That’s why we got to realize the difference between liberal from the individual’s point of view as opposed to a collective agreement within a group or society. The supercilious have all got it wrong!

The biggest threat to contemporary civilization is the lack of honesty and conscientiousness - especially among the people who are supposed to inform and enlighten the masses. It's a pity when often the dishonest ignoramuses with an insufficient brain power are trying to "educate" the public on the subject of our - i.e., of the former USSR nations' - reality and history [especially when it is coupled with a strong intention to divide the union of Russian people (i.e., Russians-Ukrainians-Belorussians-Rusyns) - this is the scammers' old colonial trick "divide and conquer"]. Ukraine, being in the Russian state and in the USSR, became the founder of the USSR and of the UN, increased its territory around seven-fold, population - in around 22 times, and finally became the third power in the world by the main civilization characteristics in 1980-ths! As a Ukrainian, I state that the distorting Ukrainian history and reality media personalities and the instigating ethnic strife criminals should be brought to the future Ukraine Nation's Military Tribunal (in the way as it was done for the Nazis by the Nazi-hunting Wiesenthal Institute) - together with the creators and supporters of the scabies/короста on the body of our nation - current puppet néonazi anti-Ukrainian regime in Ukraine. The Hitler collaborators are the main heroes of this regime, the elite force of its army is "Azov" - which was recognized as a néonazi organization even by the US Congress, the slogans and greetings of this regime are copied from the ones of the Hitler collaborators, the anti-nazi are killed by the "death squads" or imprisoned, the national thinker Oles' Busina is demonstratively killed and his killers are funded by the government! The people who really care about the civilization on the planet Earth and the free-thinking Ukrainians will always remember and hunt (again, to bring to the justice - as Wiesenthal did) the war criminals who have brought and/or supported puppet néonazi regimes in Ukraine and started the Civil war in our country ⚡

For people that are supposed to be so smart and knowledgeable, I am amazed at how ignorant they are of what's happening in current American politics! It's extremely complicated, and can't be treated lightly. You must understand the history of birth of the USA, from ideological perspective, and political perspective. Then you will know what going on there right now. The "Conservatives" in US are resisting aid to Ukraine on the grounds that it is not Constitutional. And the Democrats are tying aid to Ukraine on condition that other spending be passed as well! The Democrats have been using this tactic for years, and it's now come to a head. Unfortunately it's Ukraine that has to be the one where Republicans dig in their heels, and say "no more"! And so the aid package is stalled. And the Democrats refuse to make one exception on humanitarian grounds, and let it pass. So, there! Who is the villain? I say the Democrats.The very idea that Republicans support Putin is ludicrous! And Trump is not on Putin's side. Look at how he supplied Ukraine with javelin anti-tank missiles! All Obama sent there was MRE's, and medical supplies!

The ARROGANCE to claim that "we could impose lockdowns, cancel flights, close schools etc. and life goes on" is breathtaking! HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE HAD THEIR LIVES DESTROYED! PEOPLE LOST THEIR JOBS & THEIR HOMES. Couples and families broke up, children were deprived of education, there's a measurable drop in the IQ of millions of young children, lots of sever social problems appeared with these lockdowns. People were ARRESTED and PROSECUTED for ridiculous things such as not wearing 100% useless facial masks. They DO NOT PREVENT INFECTIONS and should not even be worn by surgeons, based on all the scientific evidence. Multiple studies over the last 40 years found that facial masks do not prevent In Canada, a court just ruled that the lockdowns imposed by the government were ILLEGITIMATE. No country should EVER have imposed such measures. And now you want to do this kind of evil, fascist crap AGAIN over the non-existent climate crisis? WHAT CRISIS??? Absolutely NOTHING is out of the ordinary! The climate was MUCH worse during the Little Ice Age - we have extensive historic documents about how devastating it was, all over the world. And it was still absolutely crazy form 1920 to 1940, with a global heat waves in 1921 that killed MILLIONS. It was so hot and dry that the lake Morat, in Switzerland, dried up completely. That hasn't ever happened again, since then. 1896 and 1911 were also years with devastating global heat waves, all far, far worse than anything we've seen over the last few years, which, supposedly, were "the hottest on record", which is simply a lie. The droughts of the 1930s have never been equaled. The floods from 1900 to 1960 were all far worse than what we've seen since then. In 1910, Paris was under water for 2 solid months. In 1928, London was under water. In 1932, almost 4 million people died because of a monumental flood in China. In the 1950s, entire towns were destroyed by floods all over Europe. There's not a single climate event, since 2000, that was as bad as what came before 1980. The cooling from 1940 to 1980 was so devastating that everyone fear mongered about a coming ice age. 85% of the scientific papers during that time were about global cooling, only 15% mentioned the possibility of warming. Naturally, the climate hysterics lie about that, too. There's famous paper that claimed a majority of studies during those years expected global warming. They simply ignored 85 papers about cooling, published in the exact same journals they referenced for their handful of warming papers. They ignored that the NOAA, the UN, all the major institutions, journals and media ONLY talked about global cooling! The first mention of a coming ice age was in The Guardian in 1962, which was so cold that almost all Swiss lakes were frozen solid. The last mention of the ice age threat I have in my records is from an Australian newspaper in 1979. The BBC, National Geographic, Nature, Science etc. all panicked about global cooling. The fact that the climate alarmists constantly lie should be enough to discredit them. Climategate was real. They tried to whitewash those involved in this monumental scandal, but all you have to do is read the actual messages to realize that there is no whitewashing. They committed massive data fraud, altering the data from the past and present to create a non-existent correlation between CO2 and temperature, they committed peer review fraud, they suppressed papers opposing their nonsense and then claimed a non-existent "99% agreement" in scientific publications. The alleged "agreement" is based on discarding or ignoring papers that disagree and on using a vague conjecture for what would constitute agreement that allows them to include even papers from people who explicitly disagree with AGW. Try to nail them down on a precise hypothesis and you'll find that they don't have one. ANY climate event is interpreted as "supporting evidence", even if it contradicts all their previous predictions. No snow? That's man-made climate change. Tons of snow? That's man-made climate change. Cold winters? A consequence of global warming. I kid you not. They do not fear to contradict themselves on each and every claim! That's why they have to be considered as charlatans. They are gaslighting people with the goal of gaining political power for nefarious ends.

The comparison is very interesting. The difference is that Ukraine other than Poland in 39 got massive military help from its supporting nations. The similarity is that Ukraine was attacked by an imperialist aggressor who pretended to be forced to protect compatriots but who‘s real motifs are aggressive nationalism, thoughts of Russian supremacy, suppression of non-Russian cultures and last but not least ressource grabbing.
@SPAWN30670
@SPAWN30670 Місяць тому
Timothy Snyder comparing Poland's situation in 1939 to the current situation in Ukraine. He forgot to mention that Poland was not helped by ANYONE. There were not 60 States that sent arms, ammunition, money like today. There was no neighbour for Poland who allowed 8 million refugees to pass through and welcomed 800,000 of them into their own homes. Ukraine was invaded by some 170,000 Russian "soldiers" In 1939, Germany launched an unprovoked attack at dawn on 1 September 1939 with a strike force of more than 2,000 tanks, supported by almost 900 bombers and more than 400 fighter planes. In total, Germany deployed 60 divisions and almost 1.5 million men. Almost 10 times as many as for the Ukraine. Two weeks later. On 17 September, the Red Army struck Poland along the entire length of the eastern border of the Second Republic (more than 1,400 km). With a force of 800,000. In total, Poland clashed with 2,500,000 invaders, the two largest military powers in the world.
@magpiegirl3783
@magpiegirl3783 29 днів тому
I think Snyder made the reference only to point out the relativity between 1939 events and 2022 events; Poland did not have military success and thus the ensuing shocking invasions and butchery by Germany and the Soviets and expansion of the war, but Ukraine has been managing to stave off (maybe the inevitable) occupation by Russia. He is an historian very well versed in the entire history of the region and is not dismissing Poland as weak or irrelevant, or Ukraine superior. I've certainly listened to his lectures which involve the plight of Poland in WW2.
