While it's clearly not foolproof (hence the video), those simple checkpoint rules are remarkably robust all things considered. While it's not hard to make rules that would be even harder to break, you do want some leeway to not cause problems for people playing casually (consider items or dubious driving sending players flying where they aren't meant to). Might be part of the reason as to why MK8's Lakitu is far more strict, the developers wanting to avoid ultra shortcuts and the issues that MKWii had.

So I don't know if I'll even get an answer, but compared to the WR History video are the differences in the number of frames to hit the punches on Glass Joe and Great Tiger due to these being the individual records and not just beating them in a run? Like on Glass Joe if you hit the first 2 frames of the 4 frame window it's a .00 and if you hit the last 2 it's .25?
