What a great video. I was into RC back in the late 1980s. Tamiya, Kyosho, Bolink, Team Associated, Losi, etc. This video brings back memories.

1:25 I still remember building my Tamiya Hotshot back in the 80s with my dad. I don't think my memories would be nearly as fond if he bought me a pre-assembled car.

I love modern power and durability but man I loved the 80s rc cars. I had a Kyosho Mid in 90 and now the Rere. Kyosho really nailed it updating the Legendary cars for modern tech!! I'll buy them all

New to the hobby myself. Just purchased a new balance charger and wanted to know the what and what on LiPos. Found this video and it was exactly the breakdown I was looking for to explain when and how to use the functions on my charger. Highly educational. Thank you!

Hmmm... I see that with a cockpit FPV camera, on a servo controlled 180 degree swivel. Use a channel for a head tracking gyro setup. That way, I can see where the car is actually going which isn't terribly straight ahead. LOL

OMG, what a great video to take me down nostalgia lane. I started with RC in the 80's - started with Tamiya grasshopper, then Marui Big Bear, then Tamiya Blackfoot, then Clodbuster, then Supershot. I remember those Tower hobby catalogues. I would mow lawn and save up money just to buy one of those models. I loved putting them together. Thank you for bringing back fond memories!

Mine has proven to be more agile and durable than any Traxxas or Arrma. And more fun to drive. It happens that people still have bad memories of the first versions in their heads, in addition to the fact that many are worshipers of their favorite brand and do not dare to try different and really good things. They only care that the model is expensive and large.

I was about 9 or 10 when I got into the hobby when I found my dads 80's Tamiya RC car in the closet... It had been there for a long time because he could not figured out how to fix it, so one day i busted that thing out of the closet and took the entire thing apart to better understand it and then figured out how to fix it... My dad was really impressed, so he took me right down to the hobby shop and bought me a Team Associated RC10T, and later on bought me a Team Losi XXT kit that I built from scratch. It was such an amazing hobby to grow up with in the early 90's. 🙂

I was born in 1980, and had the first contact with rc in 87, when my father started with rc airplanes. Years after, started with cars, motorcycles, everything that could run... the price, was prohibitive... you usually ended up having someone to teach you because you'd spend years saving money so you could buy anything... you'd never start flying alone, like everyone does today with drones... giros to stabilize the airplanes? nah... you had to make it perfectly straight or else... but today you have a big advantage: 3d printers and laser cutters very afordable! if you want to do something really custom and fine tune it, its easier. however... there aren't many persons of this new generations who are interested on rc or even static models building... and that's the true loss: only us, the "old timers", still enjoy and feel like a kid when we see something new!

Assembling your own stuff was better because it gave you more reasons to be proud of your stuff. You remembered every scuff and ding that you fixed. You desperately hoped that your chassis patch of fiberglass and epoxy would hold. You mowed a lot of lawns to buy things which gave it value. Modern RC is far better value and much better performing, but it's too cheap to matter. You don't have to build it. There's no reason to take a burned out 540 apart and see if you can clean up the commutator because brushless motors are so good. There's nothing to craft and balance. In the past, the functioning existence of your beat up kit car clearly was YOUR car because you had made profound associations with it. Now, your toy is yours only because you paid some generic dollars to buy it. If the associations between you and your doodads are weak, they cannot compete with the alluring temptations of very vivid video games and your smartphone.

old RC was better because you had to assemble the whole thing from piles of parts. made you appreciate it more. also taught me alot about how suspensions worked, how differentials worked, etc. the stuff transfers to real cars.

Why am I just now hearing about this? I currently have all Traxxas vehicles and while I don’t mind the Traxxas connector, I don’t like being locked into Traxxas batteries. I do have some Texas connector I can install on other batteries but then I lose the smart functionality which I really want to keep! I think imma have to look into this stuff because this looks like it mostly solves all my issues.

Everything needed a lot of maintenance and care to operate correctly, and when you put in the work it made a huge difference to the performance and your satisfaction. My god did that translate as an adult. In fact, this single observation explains younger gens to a tea.

"Basher Brands" need to stop. They're not selling because a lot of people don't even know what they are or who they are manufactured by. If they just said HPI on the box and then called it a "Basher Series" or something, it would be much better. There's honestly zero reason to change brands other than making the suits happy. It does nothing for the hobby itself. You can still sort and catalog your product by UPC and such without alienating and confusing the customer. I like HPI, I've owned quite a few, but there's no reason to rebrand.

Good review. Respect for full disclosure (your side) of the history from version 1. Sad reaction from HPI. Shameful even. Good on HPI / Maverick for improving, and offering version 2. This truck looks like an excellent entry model. Have a couple Maverick brand... they're no top-tier racer, but they're sturdy, and parts are plentiful.
