The signal from liver area to the brain take 2-3 sec and then the brain give the signal to stop abdominal muscle contraction and cause the fall of the boxer. It’s the same principle as any almost every other sport. You keep playing until you hear the ref blow that whistle. Play isn’t over until then and a fight isn’t over until the ref stops it.

But on top of that, a liver shot is very devastating, because the liver handles blood, and if that gets hit, you'll feel out of breath because your blood circulation won't work for a moment. Basically it puts your body into a state of shock since all of a sudden all organs can't get blood. All organs, including the brain. You're awake, but you lose focus, your body won't respond because it's trying to deal with this pain to a vital organ and vital function of the body. It stuns your body physically and mentally.

I played football as a kid and the only time I went down injured was when I got winded, the ball hit me in the stomach. It's annoying because you know what it is and that it isn't at all serious, but you need 30 seconds to recover. That being said, most of these are liver punches. Something completely different. Maybe a couple are being winded. I can't imagine how annoying it would be to get knocked out from being winded lol.

Well, Erik Morales himself has said that he barely threw hooks in his career because the was a very tall man fighting in the lower weight classes. That's why he had trouble fighting in lightweight and junior welterweight, because he relied on his reach advantage most of his career and just didn't have the need to throw hooks until he moved to Lightweight
