The Linux command line can be quite daunting. What do commands like ls, cd, pwd and less mean? When you see that blinking cursor, what is the first thing you should type? Find out more in my Linux terminal command and utilities tutorial.

Hey Gary, you may have just started your channel a year ago. But, this was fun coming from being an old guy like me who used Basic and DOS. In the late 70's, early 80's. Before that I was at Sunoco doing some keypunch and computer op work in a Mainframe room in Dallas. This is the fun of the Linux Command line. Believe it or not, it's great to see this. I hope you keep it up as so many kids need to learn precisely what you are doing here. Thanks for the great video!! Very to the point instructive and quick. Might take a few folks a minute to go back thru and grasp it. LOL! In 1975 at Sunoco we were running IBM mainframe Our system backed up Texas Instruments. I had no idea about Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Linux. At UT in the 80's I saw the first 1 meg chip from TI laying on a tech bench to be tested out and run. LOL Thanks for the fun.

Another useful option for "ls" command is "h" (eg. "ls -lah"). This shows file sizes in human readable units (kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes) as opposed in bytes only.

@bharathg8072
@bharathg8072 3 роки тому
@@believingintheblood8540 Linux natively has a command-line interface, people build GUI's to do the stuff Gary talks about and much more. It's good to know this stuff for many reasons. 1. You just want to use Linux as it is (without the GUI) using the command line or 2. You aren't happy with your current GUI you want to make your own, it is relatively easy and LEGAL as Linux is (thank god) open source. 3. To show-off that you know these things. 4. To appear as though you know stuff when navigating through Linux, with people around, and the list goes on. The bottom line is that it always pays off to know more about the stuff you use be-it cars, computer hardware, LINUX, or anything else, knowing more helps you understand it better and make you better at it!
@jonas7151
@jonas7151 3 роки тому
@@believingintheblood8540 I know it’s a bit late but it’s important for tasks only be done from the terminal or be done a lot easier and faster from there. When you need to do something in a specific folder you need to know how to get there. Also when you know the commands everything is just a bit faster.
