Guys, I didn't make the engine. It was sent to me from Banggood for review as part of our cooperation. I just made the parts that you see on the video. I will be making some interesting stuff in the near future so please stay tuned! John

Wrong. I just review the interesting stuff. I will continue making my own builds as long as I have good ideas. Which means for many years to come. It just so happens that this period I make this kind of videos. Don't worry.

@zedd81
@zedd81 4 роки тому
Why did the engine bog down when the lights were attached?
@xostler
@xostler 4 роки тому
Zedpower mechanical energy is being converted into electrical energy. Electricity is generated through induction from the magnetic fields traveling through a copper coil. The conversion is never 100% efficient. So the engine slows down because some of the energy is lost through the friction, which turns into heat.
@xostler

sonicwifi40 lol no I haven’t. I’ve seen it before while using an inverter though, but it’s always cool to me to see the laws of the universe at work
@jayzenitram9621
@jayzenitram9621 4 роки тому
@@xostler Not friction, induction. Ever hear of the concept of regenerative breaking? That is when you turn an electric motor (for example in an electric car) into a generator to send electricity back to the battery. What your are seeing here is akin to that. The engine slows down when the circuit is closed because the rotating magnets in the rotor are being required to do work by moving electrons around said closed circuit. When the circuit is open (the light is disconnected), no electrons are moving through the windings that surround the spinning magnets and therefore there is no inductive resistance on the rotor and that is why the engine speeds up.

@justkeepspinning8288
@justkeepspinning8288 3 роки тому
Even though there's no visibly added physical resistance, just because the light is shooting photons and removing energy from the system, it makes the fan spin noticeably slower. I love that you added that to the video. It illustrates a really important physical phenomenon.

Unfortunately it doesn't produce nearly enough power. Some mechanical improvements that could help it achieve that would be large heatsink fins on the cold side, more precisely machined linkages between the hot piston, cold displacers, and the nutator (wobble plate). Also, putting a faring over the engine behind the cold side to keep the hot side hot as well as putting regenerators (typically copper or steel wool) in the hot/cold passage to allow recapture of heat. Machining all of the cylinders, pistons and displacers to tighter tolerances, as well as using better seals would allow the working gas to be pressurized, or even replaced with a lighter weight gas, such as helium. Doing ALL of these things, as well as using a stronger heat source, might allow you to get a stirling engine up to enough power to fly a very light weight aircraft.

Any idea where I could find a non-toy stirling engine? I would like them for solar power for 2 reasons: 1. with 2 stirling engines, one can be run in reverse (be given motion/torque instead of heat difference) in order to move heat and thus useful for cooling or heating different places as needed. Something generating from a few Wh to a few kWh per hour would be nice. 2. it produces mechanical energy which can be then converted to electricity if needed or used as-is for things like a circular saw, or the pump(s) and fan(s) needed to optimize the whole setup. Especially since the direct mechanical energy can be used for things like pumping the water through the pipes and through the hot part of the stirling engine and fans can funnel air to cool the cool part of the engine and the excess can be used for what's necessary (i.e. circular saw, water pumping, electricity, aerial ropeways, endless rope drivers for moving kinetical energy over long distances, etc.).

how much actual thrust does this thing have? I'd love to see one of these in a model RC.

Hunter Wall these engines are vary weak and they are way to heavy to have them on a RC. you can stop them with one finger and barely feel any pain.

Theyd be absolutely useless on anything other than a solar powered sailplane. They have 0 torque to them. You could blow against the blades and probably stop them.

No thrust cus its piston powered engine not jet powered.

So the air gets cold up front and is heated on the other side and the movement of 16 pistons gets enough force to perpetuate action. Awesome

Great design overall. Connecting linkages look scary flimsy though. May wallow out rather quickly.

How do you keep it lubricated?!? I'd imagine that piece in the middle (that all the pistons are pivoting) would get torqued and hot???
