The process of joining two O.S 49 PI type II engines, has come to its end!
Apart from a bad start and a broken rear counterweight, everything went well. The engine at the moment, is working at very rich settings to prevent any overheating and it will be leaned out gradually.
Also there are some leaks that need to be addressed, but other than that, the engine starts right up, idles perfectly and has incredible throttle response considering the rich settings.
It took me a while to finish it and the result is very rewarding.

@@stevedunn854 I don't disagree that the rotor/plate failure was a blunder. 👍 I still take the broader view that the channel owner's general skill set, which is plainly evident in all of his build videos, is such that it shouldn't be unthinkingly dismissed out of hand (which is the tone of Alexander's comment). A simple mention of the rotor/plate issue, or even a gentle critique, would have been the correct and diplomatic approach here. It's instructive to consider that JohnnyQ90 could have edited out this particular event, but he didn't. His long-established M.O. should guide our corresponding feedback.

Nice, brings back memories. Back 25 years ago I built an RC plane with this engine, the OS Wankel 4.9cc / 0.3 ci (single rotor). It ran and flew well, made good power, but it had to run rich which is not efficient, and with glow fuel this is messy. My first one gradually lost compression and stopped running after a year or so, despite careful initial breakin and running it rich. OS sent me a new one under warranty. Despite its limitations, it was a unique and fun engine.

Terrific project! Congratulations. I love these little OS Wankels and have two of them. One thing, a propellor, in addition to providing the rotational momentum like your flywheel, also functions as a radiator fan to push air over the fins on the engine to cool it. Your IR camera didn't show things to be too bad, but in the long run that may be a problem. I suppose you could use an external fan for bench running.

@@inoahmann7542 Hahaha... oil cooling through oil loss, it will still overheat the rear rotor and housing. In a loaded application with a proper tune, it will certainly overheat. The rear rotor and housing is in a draft shadow AND if intended for an enclosed under a car shell and used at high rpm (14,000 is a pointless operational rev anyway) it won't last long. As stated, easier and better ways to configure multi-rotor engines given a gear reduction drive will be used anyway.
@inoahmann7542
@inoahmann7542 2 роки тому
@@BTW... Not oil cooling, actually evaporative cooling from excess methanol boiling off and not being burned. It has a very strong cooling effect. To brake in a nitro engine in cold weather you need to block off all it's cooling fins because otherwise it'll never get up to operating temp, and that's running the engine with a load, sometimes running it wot for a few seconds at a time. In a car it would need a cooling duct and fan to run with a proper tune but these engines don't need a ton of cooling like gas engines do. I don't know about this engine specifically, but I've seen os rotary engines rev out to 25-29k before (unloaded). Most nitro engines can rev in excess of 30k rpm and some can rev over 40k.

Simply awesome dude, I am a MM and studied the Wankel after buying an RX3 in the 70's, can't tell you how beating a car with a V8 off the mark felt with these little gems, but warming the engine was critical for the seals, I loaned the car to someone for a week and it came back sick. IDIOT right :( Owned 3 rotaries, but that was when I could afford the fuel lol This build from scratch is amazing (but having a lathe is a blessing and essential tool for the smarter of us - always loved metalwork!), well done Johnny, God Force has truly blessed you!

Now I'm really fascinated by Flowmax mufflers. They had sound engineers design them to give optimum performance with less noise. Noise is the ONE thing I dislike about these small engines. Add a big muffler and it might not work at all. It's not very easy to make a good one, but I wish I could find one for these small class of engines.

This thing is super cool and when it comes to the single carb making run lean I believe it’s because you have the airflow doing two 90 degree turns before entering the engine the fuel in the mixture is getting caught on these turns especially the first one I think it would work if it was a less aggressive angle off into each cylinder
@renesisfd1
@renesisfd1 Рік тому
It is also the fact that the is trying to move twice as much air through the carb. If he had one rated for the airflow it would work.

Im not sure if it’s been said already Johnny, but that exhaust is meant for a two stroke. There is a tuned baffle cone in there for resonance waves. I think you would be better off using no exhaust

@davelowets
@davelowets 2 роки тому
Just a straight pipe would be the best option. Wankels LOVE a free flowing exhaust. Edit: He is also using the 2-stroke pipe as a means to pressurize the fuel system and deliver fuel pressure to the carb. Without the pipe on it he would need to design some sort of fuel pump, which wouldn't be easy. With the current exhaust and pipe, it acts as a rather linear, RPM referenced, fuel delivery system(more fuel pressure as the RPMs go up). Not easy to replicate the same kind of fuel delivery system without using a pressure tap on the tuned pipe.
@davidgierke7582
@davidgierke7582 2 роки тому
@@davelowets Not true. A simple tap on a straight exhaust pipe will pressurize the tank. Besides, there are multiple methods that can be used for fuel delivery.
@davelowets
@davelowets 2 роки тому
@@davidgierke7582 Yes, it is true. Fuel pumps aren't exactly used very often in R/C applications... Also, we use taps on on exhaust headers on our race cars, plumbed into the valve covers of the engine, and it draws VACUUM into the crankcase, not pressure into it.

@@dans_Learning_Curve Yep very rich to lubricate everything, model engine glow fuel is commonly 15-20% oil so a lot comes out the exhaust even when they are perfectly tuned...
