9 років томуIn this project we're 3D printing custom keycaps for mechanical keyboards. This is a mechanical keyboard with cherry mx switches. It comes with extra keys which is really nice, but there's a lot of cool stuff you could do by 3D printing your own!

3:26 Alcohol doesn't cure the resin! It's used just to clean off uncured resin from the surface of the model. You should let the model sit in UV light after cleaning it with alcohol to fully cure and harden it. PS. Otherwise, great video! Nice that you touched on modeling the keycaps in CAD. I think the coolest thing with these is that you can model your own, and it helps to get some tips on getting started.

its shame that the keys didnt stay clear like they were when removed from printer. The frosty look kinda ruins it for me.

Mb0ts frosty defuse the light better to hide the bright led i think

You should try making stools/chairs on whatever is you biggest printer. You could probably do some cool multi-material stuff with an idea like that...

you can sand slightly with 1000 grit, add fiberglass resin and then polish to get clear see thru results

What about printing two color keycaps, like for backlit keyboards. I was thinking you could print the stem and characters in clear, then a cover that snaps over it in an opaque color.

i printed the skull aswell but with black pla fillament at 0.2 mm painted the skull white and cut out the eyes down to the light sorce and the nose and mouth than i made little groves in the teeth so you can see the light going trough that aswell

Could you do a commonly bought keyboard, ALL keys, ergonomically colored? My Dell XPS-15 notebook, with backlit keys, needs this. Perhaps Dell could arrange for you to have factory templates. No need to measure. On a translucent keypad, self-adhesive clear labels could be printed to fit the flat-topped keys.

Very interesting idea of replicating small parts. Speaking of resin - why not just cast a resin keycap in the first place without a 3D printer. I guess, this shouldn't be to complicated since we only have to focus on the backside. The frontside of the keycap could be designed almiost freely

i meant making a case (where you place switches, inner parts etc) by 3d printing and using other parts (like switches) from another keyboard

Well printing that case would take a ton of time and a lot of material witch is not the cheapest thing.

i'd like to see how to make a keycap with translucent white letter and post to let the mx led shine through and the rest of the cap- bpdy in black. Do I have to make a e3d printed post/letter, then put that in a mold to cast the rest? I have old eyes and need larger printing for the letters and an led backlight would help. I have bought 3 fancy keyboards the has bightlighting around the keys but none on the market shine through the letters themselves. Can you give me a workflow to making these keycaps?

love that skull key! my nickname in games is "Bone" so i'd love to have one of those. like and ESC key only. are they for sale? and could you maybe make it black with only the skull being clear? i'd totally buy that for some price. And if you figure out a way to make them stay clear instead of making it frosty i'd love that. Cheers //Johan aka Bone

Seems we're both right... Prior to the 2014 BlackWidow editions, Razer used Cherry MX switches Mine is Cherry. Says so on the switches... innit.

i’m not too sure how switches work but there’s parts in there that can’t be 3d printed, although some parts can be, it’s just impractical

Should.ha e.just.used a 3d scanner to scan a standard key and then edit the model to your needs

How about do one with a printer that is available to the general public and not the Ember which is business/research only. Makes this whole project unrealistic to the enthusiast looking to break into artisan/custom keycaps.

the stl files aren’t printer specific, we printed these just fine on fdm printers 😁
