Whether it's two minutes or eight minutes, ads are hated because they are always a jarring interruption to the flow of watching a show.

@@MichaelSaves Yeah us old folk used to Ads so its not as jarring and actually sometimes its weird to see the missing spot where an ad should be. LOL. But yeah the biggest issue is they tricked everyone into thinking that streaming would be the future to get away from Ads. LOL. Not.
@bikeny
@bikeny Місяць тому
Back in the day, when, for example, the Original Star Trek went into syndication, how do you fit 50-minute show into a 60-minute block but with more ads? Yeah, they cut scenes and they would put the ads in the spots that the original flow wasn't designed for (I like to say when Capt Kirk would go in to kiss the babe alien of the week, bam! there's the commercial break). The other thing is that prior to 1978 the ad-time was regulated to 5 and 10 minutes per 30 and 60 minutes. After then, it was left up to the market. And then pretty soon all the broadcasters started thinking like us passengers on a NYC subway train: sure, lets add another minute of ads, there's always room for one more. So we got to 10 and 20 minutes per those 30 & 60 minute blocks. And don't get me started with the channel logos and hashtags. So, any one know if these ad-supported channels have logos on-screen during the actual content? Since we didn't pay for the CBS, et al years ago, we couldn't really bitch and complain since we didn't pay for the channel. But when Showtime, et al started slapping their logos on-screen during the movies and shows, well, that was it for me. I canceled my entire directv package (well, first were those 'premium' channels, but when I got laid off, then came the rest of directv). I've got netflix ad-free (and I miss the DVDs), amazon prime [though after moving recently, I haven't set things up so I haven't seen how bad the ads are], and paramount+ [ad-free, it's through a walmart & amex promotion]. Even if I was still caring and watching the NY Mets (I stopped after the 1994 strike), I'd probably have stopped maybe 5 or even 10 years ago, what all the advertising that takes place along with the despicable practice of naming rights for the stadiums (I think 20 out of the 30 all have what I call names of corporate naming rights johns - johns as in one side of the transaction for the world's oldest profession). Every piece of info has a sponsor attached to it and the things like that pitch location graphic usually has a sponsor logo on it and in recent clips I've see on youtube, there are ads painted (?) on the back of the mound and alongside the coaches' boxes. I miss the days of Shea Stadium as well as the backstop behind home plate saying "NO PEPPER GAMES." /end of rant. Thanks for reading.

Paramount sucks big time. The app has bugs and they know it. When you’re watching a show or movie, when you least expect it, it’ll get stuck on an ad and back up two seconds and keep doing that. Paramount also has a no refund policy. I want subscribe to Paramount+ because of that.

What do you record them on? As far as I know only TIVO is available to record. Right now I have basic plus cable with a DVR. Our bill is about $200 a month. @@arieslady4951 UKposts records everything automatically. All I have to do is select a program that I may want to see later. I could record/save every program on every channel. I never watch a program/show live unless it is sports, though I often miss the live event, but always can watch later (with no adds, I fast forward in 15 second increments). Love UKpostsTV!!!!
@alanvallazza9781
@alanvallazza9781 Місяць тому
That's great except UKposts TV is very expensive and I can't justify the cost but I'm forced to keep it because I have nothing else if I let it go. The one Antenna I have is lousy and I have no way of recording over the air. I'm relying on UKposts TV for locals as well as for the other channels. So I paused it in a fit of rage over the bill but likely to unpause it because I need it especially for March madness. I've been working to cut the costs down. But the most expensive item is the one I really need. I use it for sports, I put on the add-on for MGM Plus so I use it for movies, I have the 4k add-on which I got rid off in the past but which I returned to when the pricing decreased. So you see why I'm complaining about the cost. It's not $73 that I'm paying. Plus everything comes with taxes so that $73 was really more like $82 anyways. It's disappointing.
@alanvallazza9781
@alanvallazza9781 Місяць тому
@@arieslady4951UKposts TV has a cloud DVR that is unlimited but after 9 months kiss your recordings goodbye unless you screen record it and save it as a file. It's a trade-off. You get to record everything you want but after 9 months it gets erased to make space for new things. So it's not technically really unlimited storage in perpetuity. It's more like unlimited space to record and it'll keep it for 9 months to watch. Now if a movie for example replays then you get another 9 months and if it's on a lot you can see the different recordings and the channels it recorded on. And how long you have to watch that particular recording. So basically it's unlimited space to record to their cloud DVR but after 9 months they're recording is erased and sometimes even earlier than 9 months. If you're a stickler waiting for the exact day; it may go a day earlier or a day later. Some programs like The Simpsons you got channels rerunning all the episodes all the time like FXX or Freeform so It keeps a tab of all the recordings. And you can see it by season. And generally you get all the recordings of all the episodes. So that's one show where I can get every single episode to replay. At one point NBC released on demand edited versions of past episodes between 1988 tll a few years ago. But maybe due to them moving the SNL stuff to Peacock that might have ended. But at the time I was watching on demand reruns. Of note here's one big thing. If you put an ad on and then take it away there goes your recordings. If the actual UKposts TV gets rid of a channel there goes your recordings as well. And if you pause the service, you can't use it to watch your recordings. Plus since you paused then it will not record the shows that you have set up. So please bear in mind that as long as you have an active account it will work.
@alanvallazza9781
@alanvallazza9781 Місяць тому
 I had replied to you but I don't know where the reply went. Could be that the next time I look at this the thread it appears. I was explaining you how the UKposts DVR works. I will explain it again. You get unlimited storage but after 9 months everything you record is erased. If you're a stickler and expected to actually be an exactly 9 months you could be mistaken and it may have gone a day or a week earlier the recording or could be around a day or two more. You can never be too sure. In essence you got all the space to record and you can record anything that you have subscribed to but after 9 months they'll be gone. Also if a channel is removed by either UKposts TV or you have downgraded an add-on or something similar where you no longer have the channel in question then the recordings are also erased. I also mentioned that with movies it'll record different versions if they keep replaying the movie and each one starts a brand new 9 months. If you have too many versions of the movie you can see all the different versions. Then I mentioned that The Simpsons has three channels running it. So I was able to get on demand every single episode of the show. You also get on demand content If a channel has anything. With TCM for example it gave me some movies to watch. Same with MGM Plus.

People that own their own homes in urban area still have the option to receive OTA channels via antenna. I live in Las Vegas and put an antenna where a satellite receiver used to be. I receive all the major channels and the minor ones that could with them on DTV crystal clear. Really, only missing ESPN. Also, I could add a network DVR if I wished to. While I'm not really to leave UKposts TV, I am in a position to change what I am subscribing to at any time.

My biggest problem with the ads on some services is they don't follow natural ad breaks already built into the content, how many ads some put in the middle of a movie breaking up the flow, or how repetitive the ads are. I like how Peacock does ads on movies, being a block before the movie, maybe the end, and when you pause you get a simple static ad. Edit: my other biggest gripe, and it's mainly with Peacock, and Vudu aka Fandango at home, being a Linux user(Manjaro Gnome my distro of choice) is they block us on our laptops, and desktops even using Google Chrome, or Firefox when services like Hulu, UKposts, UKposts TV, Tubi, etc.. have zero issues with what your OS of choice is as long as you're using a modern web browser with the proper plugins.

Peacock does their ad-supported plan right. No more than 60 seconds of ads per break, and no "in-movie" ad interruptions. Hulu, on the other hand, is very ad-heavy. I watched the lastest episode of Bob's Burgers on Hulu and got hit with 5 minutes, 18 seconds of ads for a roughly 22 minute show. So it was 27 minutes total, just 3 minutes less than watching "live as it airs" on Fox. While Max and Netflix also have not-so-intrusive ad breaks, they force you to buy ad-free plans if you want to watch in 4K HDR. Ughhh.
@bikeny
@bikeny Місяць тому
Question regarding those 2 channels: do their logos appear on the screen during the actual content? And if you had any of their ad-free versions in prior days, what about at those times? For me, paying anything for channel, I would not want to see any logo during the actual content, but especially if the claim to be ad-free. Thx.

@@bikeny I've only had the ad-supported versions of Hulu and Peacock. Peacock doesn't have logos on screen, but Hulu will show the logo of the broadcast network the show airs on (for example, FOX for Bob's Burgers). Ah, another person like me who remembers the good ol' days of regulated ad-time for tv. Prior to 1978, it was 5 minutes per 30 minutes. So, Star Trek had 50 minutes, All In The Family had 25. After deregulation it slowly increased to the point where you get 10 and 20. I remember watching The Sopranos on HBO. What glorious ad-free experience that was. When they said they are syndicating it, we all wondered, ok, you can dub all the curse words, and if you're gonna cut some scenes down, ok, but you're gonna stop the action to stick in an ad and make folks wait 4 minutes to find out what's happening? Think again. I'm one of those folks in the older generation and I can't stand all the ads. I got so fed up over the years of more and more ads, that even using the VCR with the FF button became a PITA. I loved signing up with netflix back in 2006 for the dvds and then their streaming. No ads, no on-screen logo crap. I am not a sports person (I stopped caring and watching about the NY Mets after the 1994 strike), so I couldn't care any less about the RSNs and their problems. I still have the ad-free netflix, but I haven't watched amazon prime since I moved a few months ago, so I haven't made a decision about their ad stuff. I also have paramount+, ad-free. That's it as far streamers. As others have said, as did Michael, some of these streamers aren't jamming tons of ads down our throats. That's how they start. I'm sure in a not-so-long-time, those 2 or 3 minutes of ads per hour, they are going to go to 4 or 5. Sorta like, gee, if 3 minutes is good, 4 is better, and 5 is awesome.

Agree with every point. People like me that have no interest in sports continue to get screwed. I am being charged for something I will never watch. How about an option for a service with news only, including the big 3: CNN,MSNBC, FOX news. I dropped cable 4 years ago. Since then streaming has gotten so much worse. I will not watch commercials, Period. I hate them with a passion. I pay for premium services without commercials, but cost continues to increase. With cable I could record shows and skip the commercials. The ad supported services have no way to skip commercials. That is a big step backward. Sling Blue is my only choice for getting the news at a low cost, without a bunch of sports. Of course now I hear they are in financial trouble. Probably looking at yet another price hike, or maybe disappearing. Ads will only increase on all add supported services. Look at linear TV now. Nothing but commercials. I am now paying more than I paid for cable, but of course I have much more to watch without commercials.

Yeah most people only view about maybe five "cable" stations and a local station or two. Then you get the entire bundle with UKposts TV for just those channels for 70+ dollars a month. I actually view more UKposts content and upgraded to UKposts Premium as I get more value there than normal TV.

One thing that bugs me is that places like UKposts TV will list a channel for the base price and then take that channel off and make you pay more for it. An example is the Tennis Channel when they brought it back it was part of the base package and now you have to get a sports package to get that channel. I for one do not watch sports but that was one channel when my mother was alive loved to watch it.

The only thing that REALLY offends ME when it comes to ads is when, knowing the content creator as well as I can just by watching a few videos, UKposts advertises something on one of their videos that is total anathema to the creator's agenda. Like one for instance who is the one country singer who has NEVER recorded a song in favor of alcohol and also just happens to be the best friend of a famous cousin of mine who has his own TBN talk show. Since YT began their war against adblock, there have been a lot more liquor ads on his channel. And just about all of them unskippable. They also keep getting longer and longer. Makes me want to use a word that would make my aforementioned cousin's skin crawl, considering he's also an ordained minister

Another great video, thanks Michael. I’m old enough to remember when I didn’t have to pay the networks to show me their clients’ ads. Sure, we had fewer programs/broadcast networks but it was free. Leave it to the networks, legacy in particular, to now make us PAY to see their clients’ ads. It’s absolutely ridiculous and the only language these companies will understand is “cancellation”.🤬 I have a question for you, Michael. When do you think streamers will crack down on people bingeing programming quickly then cancelling the service…some kind of contract or early cancellation fee? I have a feeling that’s coming.
@MichaelSaves
@MichaelSaves Місяць тому
I think what’s more likely is incentives to not cancel rather than punishments if you do. The addition of sports to some of these services is an example. They’re trying to make it a must-have. Churn is a huge issue. But I don’t believe the younger generation has a tolerance for a 2-year TV contract and the media companies know they can’t go back to that model. They will evolve it somehow. I just don’t think they’ve figured it out quite yet.

It seems to me that getting a TabloTV to watch and dvr record local ota channels might be the most cost effective way to go, then subscribing to a service like SlingTV for as many cable channels as possible. This way paying substantially less per month than UKpostsTV and possibly also Hulu Live... But the drawback that I can envision with the TabloTV is if the antenna that it comes with isn't as strong as say the Mohu antenna which is built with a coaxial-thickness size cable.. I understand that the antennas with a really thin cable just do not get the greatest reception of as many ota channels.. So being in the WPB area I wonder if the TabloTV antenna would get me reception for channels all the way down in Miami...? Still trying to decide the best plan for our soon-to-be-made move away from the high-cost Comcast Xfinity cable tv plan we have.

Hi Michael-I wanted to compliment you on your excellent and thorough content! I am in the minority that I don't mind ads too much, because I find them to ads to be a reflection of one's country, and thus interesting in a way. However, I do agree that Hulu is one of the worst, in the sense of having them, I think, every 7 minutes or so. Ugh. I don't mind the ads on tubi or the Roku channel so much, as they are not as often or as long, generally speaking, in my experience. And, though I haven't had cable for maybe 10 years now, I can imagine the ads on cable TV is worse than most ad supported streaming services, like you said. I also realize that ads pay for much of the cost of streaming, so I get it that ads are needed. I found it interesting that Netflix makes more money on their ad supported service than their ad free ones. I also agree that it is hard to remember where to find your favorite shows, or sports. That can be frustrating, but no way will I go back to cable, even as streaming services get more expensive. Thanks again for this thorough video!

Like the fire stick, Amazon sold millions of them and let people side load IPTV and other bootlegs services so they sold like hotcakes. Now Amazon is locking them down and millions of people are stuck with Fire Sticks that don't allow side loading anymore but you know people are not gonna get rid of them so Amazon has plenty of eyes to push ads to.
