We traveled in our RV fulltime for 12 years and gave up DirecTV after 3 years (took our old single knob dish from the old house & used it) due to the cost increases. Went to antennas only & never looked back. Now we've resettled into a regular house again and we only use an antenna to get all local channels & the sub channels they provide. We don't care for the current cable or streaming stuff, so we happy with getting out local channels for especially weather related issues and watching the channels like story, defy, grit, outlaw, laff,.... Along with a extensive DVD collection - we're happy paying nothing!

I bought a Channel Master 100 mile directional antenna and I get all my local channels except PBS. I use their app to get their programming. I tried to find an antenna installer back then but could not find one in my area. I installed the antenna myself and it works great. I live in Florida and we get Hurricanes so I put in some 18 gauge cables to help support the 25' mast that I used. It is working fine and I've had no issues with the setup. The only thing I may do in the future is get a box that would give me the ATSC 3.0 signals that they are now broadcasting in my area. I don't need it since all my stations come in strong except CBS 12 which has a VHF signal! Hopefully in the future they do what NBC 5 did and add a UHF channel in their lineup! I talked to a Senior Engineer at Ch. 12 and they may do this in the future.

What do you do for entertainment?
@FunkeyPhysicsMonkey
@FunkeyPhysicsMonkey Місяць тому
I never signed up for cable. What I do for entertainment is I have some services: Crunchyroll (anime): about $8 a month HiDive (anime) : about $4 a month (terrible UI and may not be worth it with its poor library but has some good exclusives) I also have Nebula and Curiousity Stream that was bundled for $16 a year and I did it to support a UKposts channel. I barely use the service, but it is also the cheapest non-free service by far. UKposts: I watch videos for "free" (has the cost of watching ads) Then I also read some Mangas. It is easy to find uploaded Mangas ... I mean you can officially read each chapter of a manga once for free with at least one manga company (manga plus app) Then there are videogames. I got a refurbished computer and a refurbished gpu that I installed Linux on. With that I played steam games (like The Witcher 3) and free open source games from the Linux app repository (like SuperTuxKart). I also eventually got a Steam Deck to play games on and played some smaller titles, then I made a Batocera OS hard drive to boot into to play retro games so I do that too. I wanna make a server, so at some point I will have Jellyfin which will allow me to be a self hosted steaming service for my family. I also wanna put ebooks on there and get digital copies of all my physical books so that we can read on the go for entertainment (and maybe find audiobook options so that I can "read" while I am doing other things like cooking or washing dishes). I don't listen to music as much as I would like too so I want to put some music up on my server to share with my family too when I get around to it.

Thanks for your great information! Love Tyler the Antenna man! We used his recommendation for an in-house antenna. We put it in the highest corner of our garage closest to the tower we were trying to get. Then we hooked up the cable from the antenna to our old cable wiring which means we can plug any tv in our house up to the old cable input and they all get network tv from the one antenna!

I really don't understand why more Americans don't have antennas to get free local stations. In the 1950s and 60s, 100% percent of TV households had at least one antenna. But today, many people act as though antennas are some sort of impossible technology to figure out or that an antenna won't work at their home. Antennas may not work for a small number of households, i.e. homes in the mountains or too far away from the broadcast location. But the overwhelming majority of US households can get their locals with an antenna. If you spend no more than an hour researching what type of antenna you need for your home and no more than an hour installing the antenna you should be all set. I told this to a co-worker of mine and he said, "I don't have that kind of time." And I said, "Then how do you have time to watch TV?" He couldn't answer that question. Plus there are DVRs you can buy to record over the air channels. This is ultimately way less expensive for your locals than a live TV streaming service.
@kingtrance307

True but not everybody is comfortable climbing up on a high rooftop and doing the installation and running the coaxial cable, drilling holes, mounting the outdoor antenna, sealing up the work properly etc. It’s actually a skill to do it right. Hiring a professional isn’t cheap either so for many installing a good outdoor antenna is definitely an investment. With costs going up on streaming services probably a good one to consider though.

Losing Locast was unfortunate. When we had DirecTV and during a dispute with one of the local TV networks that I think was NBC during football season that they added the Locast app so that we could still watch that network. Indoor antennas do work for some, but not all where I am. I cannot pick up our ABC station, but pretty much the other networks are fine plus the other independent channels as well as some additional HD channels that most of the networks put out like Movies, Buzzr and even Antenna TV. It seems that my best option to get all of our channels is going to have to be an outdoor antenna since the Atlanta area is so vast. I really appreciate all that you do to help us find cheaper alternatives for watching whatever content we can get for a lower price. I am digging UKposts TV which does have all the networks including our 2 PBS stations where no other live TV service has to date. I remember holding off a bit while I kept looking at what each live TV service is providing as far as local stations.

I live about 70 miles from the nearest OTA transmitter tower so therefore I do not get any local channels over the air. It is very frustrating. It’s too bad that Locast was shut down because that was very handy for watching NFL and other live sports for free. Such Internet retransmission services have to find a model complies with FCC regulations. If I recall, Locast was beginning to make money off of its service, and that is against the law.

I cut the cable at that time and the only thing I pay for is the internet (300mbps, plenty for me). Free streaming services are useful, but their commercial breaks have gotten too frequent and too long for my tastes. Lucky for me the local library has a nice selection of DVDs and Blu-rays for check-out. Total bill now is $55/mo.

I have done the same. We had an antenna in the attic, so I added a Tablo tuner to the system so we can watch on the Roku devices on any TV in the House or DVR it. Our local libraries have great DVD collections. I also pick up DVD's at thrift stores. I have over 500 DVD's in my own library that cost only $2 or $3 each. We do not subscribe regularly to any services but the free ones, but we will pick up one of the streamers for a month if there is something special we want to see.

The problem with Sling carrying ABC in those larger, select markets is subscribers there pay $5/mo more for having ABC, and as far as I can tell, there is no way to opt out of ABC and save that cost. Thankfully, Sling for us carries Fox, so when we want news for a local event, usually for major storms, we're covered.

In 2027, ATSC1 will be discontinued. Broadcasters are lobbying for the switchover whether or not everyone is ready. The new system is pay TV ready. Although, TV stations will be free at first, you can bet that you'll have to pay a fee or sign up to their streaming service to watch it. Because of this, I don't plan to do any upgrades to my outdoor antenna set up. I don't see the value in it if in a few years, I'll have to pay for it. I'm not watching TV now, so I don't see a point in it. If ATSC3 was what we thought it was going to be, improved reception with free TV and more channels, I would be looking to invest in a better outdoor antenna, but as it is not, I just don't think it's worth it.

TV is for seniors, but, that said, it seems to me the price of cable is simply the amortized cost of installing an antenna for most people, and since most people are mechanically inept and/or cannot install an antenna for legal reasons (living in a rental), the price of cable TV goes up. It's all good since we invested in cable stocks like Comcast so we're compensated.

Try hooking the antenna up to an AirTV device. This gives you the ability to access your antenna channels through the Sling app, alongside their streaming channels. Sling has a free streaming service (Sling Freestream) so you don't even need a paid subscription to Sling to be able to use this feature. Or, if you have a Roku TV, just hook up your antenna directly to the TV, and use the Live TV (tuner) app built into the Home Screen. This gives you the antenna channels in the same guide as Roku's free streaming channels from The Roku Channel.

TV is not worth this cost of any cable, sat, streaming or ota.

Frankly, I don't understand the justification to charge for streaming live local TV content. Isn't advertising supposed to already cover the costs and profits? So, is it just a cash grab from sucker consumers? In any case, antennas are cheap. There is no need to pay for the streaming. Netflix ÷ antenna is more than enough for my needs. And FAR cheaper.

The government is taking the ACP Program away which means I won’t be able to afford my internet anymore. So I cancelled all my streaming services. I get so sick of corporate greed. COX keeps raising their rates every year. The government won’t put a price cap on COX but they’ll take our programs away. aka ACP.

Both CBS & NBC tried to live without NFL for a couple of years in the past. Well it hurt their ratings. So they got the NFL back in future years despite the high costs per season.
@crodrules
@crodrules Місяць тому
@@amazingeric97The same could be said for ABC, when Monday Night Football moved over to their sister network, ESPN. The only reason ABC got it back last season was because of the writers' and actors' strikes. There wasn't enough new entertainment content to fill ABC's fall lineup, so they started simulcasting ESPN's Monday Night coverage. It will be interesting to see if ABC continues doing that going forward.

I can tell you a couple things about sports but this is hardly the channel to discuss it on but here's a hint, most of the time a sports station can be dead last in the market and it will not be shut down same with News Talk because of the purposes they both serve.

@crodrules
@crodrules Місяць тому
Do you want to pay upwards of $60 per month, just for the locals? That's what cable providers are charging now, by the time you add-in all of their hidden fees. (Broadcast TV surcharge, equipment fees, etc.) Maybe when cable providers are no longer allowed to use "hidden fees" to advertise a lower price (per a recent FCC ruling) then the actual price will come down, to make cable more competitive. Until then, the cheaper alternatives are a better option, even if they don't offer as many local channels as the local cable provider does.

I hate sports. Jocks think they owned the world. I hated high school because of how Jocks and sports got away with everything. I am tired of sports getting special treatment when it takes my show off and I miss it. Best things is to get rid of sports so we can have lower cost. If people want to watch this crap, then make them pay for it. Comcast charges a sports fee so I have to pay for some neighbor to watch TV. Why should I be forced to pay for his bad habit?
@crodrules
@crodrules Місяць тому
Which channels do you watch on Comcast? Have you looked into dropping their TV service, and switching to a cheaper package from a different provider, that doesn't have that sports fee? With Dish's Flex Pack, for example, the national sports channels are an add-on, not included in the base pack. So if you don't want the sports channels, you don't have to pay for them. Dish doesn't even carry the regional sports networks anymore, either. So, it sounds like Dish may be a better fit for your TV service (unless a cheaper streaming service like Philo would fit your needs instead) and you could just keep Comcast for internet-only.
