The car world is going electric: a growing list of automotive manufacturers are pledging to phase out combustion engines by 2030. And good way to track this transition’s progress is to look at the various platforms these cars are built on, as well as how they are built.
On a basic level, there are three ways for manufacturers to create an EV:
Retrofitting: Manufacturers modify existing internal combustion architecture to build an electric car. It’s the simplest and quickest method to build an EV, and the process has become a lot more sophisticated in the days since Tesla dumped batteries into a Lotus Elise chassis to build its Roadster. But it’s still an ad hoc method, and can be a dead-end for future development.
Hybrid Platforms: Many modern car architectures have been designed to pair with modular combustion, hybrid, and pure electric powertrains. On the plus side, this gives the manufacturer a lot of flexibility to adjust to the market -ut on the EV front, it limits design choices by forcing them into the strictures of combustion platforms.
Dedicated EV Platforms: Most manufacturers are (or will be) moving to dedicated EV platforms over the next decade. These are basically skateboards consisting of wheels and a battery pack, and offer maximum design flexibility. They are expensive and time-consuming to develop, but once a manufacturer has a purpose-built EV platform, it’s relatively straightforward and cheap to design new vehicles from it. This is why you have some companies taking a long time to get their first EV out the door, but are still pledging to have 10-25 of them at dealers by 2025.
Here’s a look at the all the EV platforms individual manufacturers are currently using.

● 1. Canoo - World’s Flattest Electric Vehicle Platform
Canoo is a startup American manufacturer of electric vehicles. The company plans to sell a minivan in the year 2022. The company's also plans to produce commercial electric vehicles such as vans for vehicle rental and ride sharing services.
The company is located in Torrance, California, near Los Angeles, California.
Canoo has developed the world’s flattest skateboard platform, which enables class-leading passenger and cargo volume on a small vehicle footprint. For example, the canoo, which will offer the interior space of a large SUV, but on the exterior footprint of a compact car.
To help achieve this, Canoo’s suspension utilizes a double wishbone with two fiberglass leaf springs, mounted transversely in the front and rear of the platform. The dampers are mounted to the frame, eliminating the need for large shock towers that take up vital cabin space. The entire suspension system is incorporated into the skateboard and sits below the height of the tires.

You know what would be cool If someday we could design an electric vehicle platform so versatile and so cheap people could buy it rent some equipment for the weekend and design and build their own EV from scratch based on their needs and desires Not to make a car brand but for their own personal use Imagine what kind of tectonic shift in the status quo that could could create and what kind of features we could get that’s too expensive for mass production

For like a starter thing they should put in enough of a vehicle to drive (A seat, wheel, and pedals), everything else you gotta put on yourself

In the early days of the automobile they were all so expensive only the rich could afford one. The car makers only built the rolling chassis & the buyer had to deliver that to a carriage shop who would build & fit a custom body. I see that practice returning with EVs. One or 2 platform makers might build the rolling platform, a SKATEBOARD as they call it & other companies might provide the body be it a sedan or a van or a pickup or a step van delivery vehicle. I also dont understand why each builder is involved with building batteries. Tesla is in partnership w Panasonic & I read just yesterday another is entered into partnership with Samsung for batteries. Thats how it should work. EV makers call up a battery co & tell them the specs of the battery they need and the battery co will build it for them. EV battery backs are made up of several battery modules. In a perfect world there would be just 1 battery module & different battery packs would be assembled to create the battery pack required for that particular vehicle. Seems like this would streamline the Ev build process. !

sharing the subframe between different models has always been a failure with all the car companies that have tried it in the past . I wonder how it will work for electric though we'll see. considering how expensive electric cars are i I don't think it's going to go over well with consumers sub frame being shared between a subcompact an SUV . a sedan .etc etc .

😂 GM uses principle of designing with less wiring as their secret to lighter more efficient vehicles? Simplicity of wiring is a key yet not a crucial or sales pitch beyond reflecting less maintenance, and lower for service
