Yup can attest to that, cauterized a good bleeder on my leg after falling and sliding down a slope covered in branches during a hunting trip. Thank goodness my grandfather taught me to always take a first aid kit with me and a bullet extractor. I'd say the immediate sting of the alcohol was worse than the cauterization, but man did the pain after cauterizing hurt so bad.

It really is on another level. Take a first aid kit to the field but wound up almost tearing a finger off several years back that my kit was fairly useless on. Just glad it happened when I had stopped to set camp and already had the fire going.

They used my craftsman stapler I use to staple wood with wood staples, used half a gallon of rubbing alcohol disinfecting everything first and I'm sad youtube won't let me upload the video..

Watched this movie with my horrified girlfriend. The second it ended I said "man I wish Dr Raynor covers this ". I was in tears in the underwater scene. It looked so absolutely idiotic and awesome. Man I love this movie

That DC-3 was in excess of 85 knots by the time the character swung his pickaxe, as it was rotating. Let’s be generous and say that he was 150 lbs, and the closing rate when he swung was a nice even 100mph (it was definitely faster). That’s just shy of 68,000 Joules of energy. He’s not holding onto that axe. If his grip holds, his arms are permanently dislocated… and by dislocated, I mean located somewhere other than his torso.

As Nazi Germany did not field DC-3 aircraft, the point is moot. ;) Besides, without kryptonite to weaken him, the Germans didn't stand a chance. Although, I'd give him the surviving an MP-40 burst through a shielding body, as there were multiple documented cases of German winter uniforms and jackets stopping M1911 rounds, as well as M3 grease gun fire. But, overall, it's a foreign invader vs a Finn and the invader entirely forgot to bring kryptonite. Historically, the Finns are unique in fighting first the Russians, alone, then with the Germans, later, fighting the Germans and pushing them out of Finland.

@@spvillano The soviet union did fly Lisunov Li-2 Aircraft which are the license build DC-3s and C-47s and the film depicts the aircraft with a red star. The germans probably stole a Li-2

I could see how they might have been tempted to get out a bit faster... ;) Or it's just another impossible thing stacked onto the rest for the film. Really, part of its charm is its sheer implausibility.

There is a medical term for WW2 era finnish "Sisu". Its called Pervitin (WW2 amphetamine). Finnish soldiers really did do heroic feats like ski 100 kms one way, assault an enemy base, then ski back another 100 km, all in one day. But it wasn't done by pure grit alone. Magic german pills that turned you into a Superman helped a lot. And after the ordeal the heroes were stuck in a hospital for 2 weeks for frostbites and overexhaustion.

@@jabbersart6218 Finns were a different culture, they're not slavs. But they most likely had vikings of their own at the time. Vikings used psychedelic mushrooms to rouse themselves to battle. Amphetamine is a fairly new drug from the end of 1800's.

My FINNISH SAVO based grandfather had experience with PERVITIN (amphetamine technically) in WINTER WAR - if I remember correctly his late stories before he died - even my grandmother had it from pharmacy back in day for any päänsärky / headache - go figure with Finnish army all armed with those tablets at bad times - I am no one to comment but if being scientifically fair - it had effect on our wars - rest of it was pure SISU (attitude to not let anyhing on your way to get you down) - PEACE & LOVE ya´ll

End of WWII and he had his group’s Pervoten…meth…and to stop the oncoming Soviets, he takes ALL the meth…for everyone in his squad. What happens next is just insane. Has an Award named in his honor that goes to the best SF unit in the 10th SFG every year.. and 10th Special Forces Group HQ in Fort Carson is named in his Honor. Some say he was the original SF guerilla guy. Using tactics akin to the devils brigade in 1939. He was one of the first, if not the first MACVSOG instructor. Jack of all trades. The real "stick him behind enemy lines and watch him go to work" kinda soldier you only see in movies. it took a helicopter to bring him down, no human could.

I don't like glorifying war, but the Finns did do truly incredible crazy things in the war against Russia at WW2. If I remember correctly the russians had 7 times more soldiers and completely superior arsenal of everything else - weapons, planes, tanks... Yet their casualties and losses were HUGE a lot more than Finlands. (Or did they have even more soldiers and the losses were 1:7..? Anyways, the numbers are insane.) Russia attacked and Finns won the first round but the second was too much. But still, Finland didn't get occupied and stayed independent (although lost some land etc. had to tiptoe and do some ass kissing). I don't think many countries have managed to fight them off like that? Hopefully Ukraine will continue to succeed too and the attack on them will stop. Saying "Russia", but it was ofcourse Soviet Union back then.

In case anyone is wondering... The 9x19 ammunition produced by Germany was generally geared for their subguns rather than their pistols, meaning it was loaded pretty hot in comparison to ammo available on most consumer markets. Powder load was usually on par or more than even the hottest +p defense ammo. Combine that with a ten inch barrel and those fmjs are MOVING...they'd shred and it'd just get easier to pass through with each consecutive round... Anyone hunted with their camp9?

I loved this movie so much! That tank machine gun is actually a Russian DShK that shot longer .50 cal rounds than the American M2. Literally designed to penetrate armored vehicles. I don't think his meat shield would've stopped anything.

Been a couple of cases in the indigenous community here in Australia where one guy had a blade shoved through his head like that, it gave him a radical frontal lobotomy, his family said it changed his personality and he was a lot less agro. Another had a blade vertically driven into his skull top dead centre and he survived as well, apparently went right between left and right hemispheres. It is amazing the kind of brain injuries people can survive.

It was a terrible movie, but you're allowed to like it. There are so many amazing true stories that came out of Finland that better portrayed Sisu than this nonsense. It would have been so much better to have seen fictionalized versions of those sorts of stories. Not low budget X-Man movie

As one that have experienced extreme pain at times in my life, I can testify that you can endure pain they you never thought you could if you manage to be strong and stubborn enough mentally to endure it. Even if some of what he survives is over the top, his ability to take the pain and fight on, even if he has lots of wounds, pains and is very tired, is totally plausible. We humans have an incredible ability to endure and push on with the right mindset, and that is what the word SISU is all about.

This might be what some people call “tmi”, but when I was going through bone cancer, I had to take three different chemo medicines, and one of the side effects I experienced from one of them (methotrexate) were blisters. Not only did I get blisters all down my throat, but I got blisters all up my butthole too. And for two months after my leg amputation (below the knee), every time I would poop it felt like my stump was going to explode from pressure/pain. Pooping really sucked when I was going through cancer. I don’t really know how I made it through that. I don’t think I could handle going through everything I went through during that time again.

Gold pans are also plastic. But they might have been thicker and tougher back in the 40's. But maybe he found Captain America's shield and used it for panning? Tony Stark used it for fixing a table once. Joking aside. 8mm mausers are great rounds. It would have gone through the victim and been no good. If it was a hollow point it might have blown his leg off. With nothing but the entry wound left.

23:30 - President James Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, but did not die until September 19. Over two months later ! He was actually mentally alert most of that time, and if his doctor didn't constantly poke around his wound with his dirty fingers, probably would have survived this injury.

2 remarks : it's the vapor of the gasoline that burns, not the liquid itself, forming a tiny layer between skin and flame. So if you light, turn and run like the character you don't get burned much. The hanging scene shows a possibility for the noose not fully collapsing the trachea as the knot is to the side, not the back.

I remember when I was in school a friend was doing the following trick - release some lighting fluid from his cigaretteli ghter in his closed fist and then open his palm and light it on fire. The vapors would burn, but he'd put it out after a second or two and not injure himself. Once he let the flame burn for a second or two too long and it hurt enough to make him jump and curse, but he was able to put it out before it really butned him.

*No one could beat John Rambo* 😄 Now I realized how John Rambo movies was realistic compare to lots of modern movies likes John Wick, Fast and Furious and Sisu. During watching Sisu I cannot believe how he could survived of : 1. Massive shots of 30mm or 50mm caliber which is that can destroys solid wall. 2. Hanging scene due of Atami had burn wound of grade 2 n 3, shots wound and he has lost many bloods, he could gets infections due of that wounds. 3. Plane fall scene, at least Atami gets some bones fracture, torso trauma , brain trauma due of the impacts of fallen plane. But I believe he could survive of : 1. First gunshot scene 2. Burn scene, but still these an idiotic act to burn yourself in order to survive from dogs attack. Maybe he can survived of it but he would gets some burn wound of grade 2 n 3 and gets an infection and sepsis because he jump to the river 3. River escape scenes, Aatami can survive beneath water but his wounds gets infections it going to sepsis . The plane scene where he can hanging on plane using an axe is imposible similar to lots scenes on Fast and Furious. Thankyou for your information doctor.

no recovery, mutiple infected wounds, burns, many joint injuries, tetanus, brain damage, and extreme exauhstion. Not to mention WW2 Medicine isn't the best, Penecillin wasn't widely avalible yet.

Hello Dr. Raynor, I consider myself a bit of an amateur enthusiast of military arms and armor. Let me give you a bit more info. Firstly, the clip at 8:25. Around this time, most types of body armor in use were typically a type of metal vest or cuirass and were typically only issued to specialized troops. These types of armors were also more often used by Allied troops, mainly the Soviets. They were bulky metal plates typically worn over a soldier's blouse. Germany did not issue much, if any, body armor to any troops, therefore this German soldier was only protected by his blouse and undershirt. Secondly, the clip at 11:38. This German soldier fires a tank-mounted DShK, which is a Soviet heavy machine gun produced and used by the Red Army during the war. Firstly, it shouldn't be on a German Panzer, but that's besides the point. The DShK was intended to be an anti-aircraft gun, and was mounted on everything from Soviet planes to tanks. However, it does not fire .50 BMG as you stated. During World War 2, all DShK's fired the 12.7×108mm cartridge, which is large enough to take down a plane or decimate a vehicle. There is a .50 caliber DShK, but it was produced long after the Second World War. So Aatami here is being shot at by an anti-aircraft gun and should absolutely not be alive after that, he would be turned to Aatami paste. Great video!

The movie wraps itself up fairly well and doesn’t merit a sequel. A prequel that addressed the “one-man death squad” and his actions in the Winter War (and Continuation War) has more potential.

Yes movies do stretch the limits of practicality and believability. 😮🤦🏻♂️ I totally agree. I don't know what specific training you have had, but there is combat medicine and "jungle" medicine that military and survivalists regularly encounter. I don't have any specific or extensive knowledge of the remedies in this video, but I defer to you to explain to me in the context of shear survival instincts what remedies here would actually do some good given the alternative to actually keep going? Only in the most dire of circumstances I imagine.

Sisu is more of a supernatural entity, possibly descended from the Norse gods. He is the embodiment of strength, will and determination and is tied to nature. Great movie!

You might look at Paul Harrell's 'Meat target' as he uses leather jacket skin followed by pork steak pectorals, pork ribs, a bag of oranges to simulate lung tissue, more pork ribs on the back, four layers of t-shirt on the front, four layers of t-shirt on the back, to simulate a human torso. It's not the same as ballistics gel, but I like that the pork and leather is an analogy (yes oranges aren't lung) to human rib bones. . .

I've heard that the crumpling of the metal as it desellerates is sometimes reffered to by engineers as 'litho-breaking'' or 'hardware assisted decelleration

Another grat video, thank you. I know that using a human sheild to defend oneself against a 9mm does seem to push the suspension of disbelief, but for the sake of discussion I do wonder how effect it would have been in the 1940s. After the 1986 Miami Shootout, the FBI did considerable questioning into the effectiveness of the 9mm. Law enforcement did begin to question the 9mm effectiveness again after North Hollywood Hills. Even without +P rounds, modern 9mm has become a lot more effective since both of those instances and has shown to even be effective against some forms of soft body armor. Makes me wonder how much more effective modern 9mm rounds are over 1940s versions. I am also hoping that Professor Thumb reads comments on your videos and can test this out.

No not neccesarily true, good written stories cover their bases in that regard, and try to have as little to none plotholes as possible. That said this is an action movie that absolutely never went for any degree of realism in the first place, if anything it went the opposite route. Great fun this one, lowkey hoping for a sequel but i dunno what it would even be about.

When Dr. Raynor says leaving a bullet in can be better than removing it… He is not wrong! A good example is my father, when he was a child his brother shot in the face with a pellet gun. The metal pellet hit between the nose / eye area and upon removal doctors found the pellet pushed deeper until it was behind his eye. To avoid further damage or potential blindness, they have left the pellet there and is still inside him to this day.

Just from what I know about guns and fire I knew this stuff was outrageous, but damn, if Sisu isn't a damn fun movie! In some ways it feels like a callback to the the heady days of 80s action, which I dearly miss. Simple, entertaining insanity! But, videos like this do not decrease my enjoyment one bit, don't worry. Using them for an educational opportunity is only a different kind of fun. Great video, Doc, thanks.🙂

saw some vid of the shock absobency of bog... but much as he maybe survived the plane nose impact its the collapsing tail which would have likely killed him... makes Rambo and Die Hard seem highly plausible BUT still a very fun watch

I enjoyed this video on what really would happen to the human body in these instances. Just saw this film last night. Yes in the real world he would have died. However this is pure entertainment and as you said a great ride. Great film not to be taken seriously but enjoyed with a big box of popcorn and some soda pop. I really enjoyed it.

That was a crazy fun film. A cheaper but no less wild mix of Inglorious Basterds and John Wick. EVERYONE ought to watch it. I have heard stories of soldiers and other people in the past who seemed simply too tough to kill. Nothing would stop them. It was like they were made of grit and stone. Pvt. Desmond Doss was such a human. He eventually was stopped due to wounds, but the man participated in two other major actions in the Pacific BEFORE Hacksaw Ridge earning TWO bronze stars before he even got to his most famous bit. And most people have no idea that Mel Gibson had to downplay Doss's actions in just Hacksaw Ridge to make the film believable. He didnt even bother mentioning Doss's other military actions. People ask if he did even what he did in the film in terms of the action (many events in his normal life were exaggerated though). Yes, he did all that. And he did a whole bunch more. Blown up several times, shot at and actually shot, starved, beaten on and wounded multiple times, and until the end of the battle for Hacksaw Ridge, he simply could not be stopped. So while this movie is FAR out there, we do have some real life examples of people who are a bit similar xD
