Please note that ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel (two different substances) is not 1 to 1 analogous to a human. Ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel is mainly used (if calibrated and at a specific temperature) to provide a repeatable test medium for research. The FBI recommends that the projectiles be able to penetrate 16 - 20 inches in ballistics gelatin to perform adequately in a human torso. The gelatin will allow greater penetration than a human body will by about 105% to 110%. Additionally, the test medium does not adequately imitate skin, bone, organs or other tissues and any clothing worn will have an effect as well. The recommendations made by the FBI addresses the shortcomings in the test medium when testing the performance of ammunition. The FBI standard is based on a specific and repeatable test medium and testing conditions which allow for useful testing and evaluation of the performance of various projectiles which allows us to compare them accurately. The FBI standard also allows for independent verification of the results by others. The Ballistic torsos used in this video does address some of the short comings of a standard block of ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel alone. The torsos used still lack skin and clothing and we do not know if they were calibrated, what temp they are at during filming, how old they are and other factors, so your mileage may vary.

Yeah, UNfortunately, the face has a lot of material that isn't technically necessary for basic life functions. That "un" is big though because most people consider their eyes, mouth, tongue, etc, pretty damned useful. Sounds like that guy was "lucky" in that the vast majority of the pellets missed. I'll never forget seeing a video from...China I believe, where a guy had attempted to commit suicide via shotgun to the face. He succeeded in removing most of his face but very unfortunately missed the brain, so he was still alive. No idea what the outcome was, hopefully they OD him on morphine or something.

@@christopherpottie8474 9mm was 115gr +p+ Federal 9bple, .40 (our main duty caliber then) was Federal 165gr HST. .223 was Federal 55gr boat tail jhp. 12 ga was Federal 00B Tactical with "Flite-Control" wads and their "low recoil" 1oz slugs. I retired and they recently went back to 9mm as primary, issuing Federal 124 HST (a fine round and I approve .. for all that matters).

That would be cool to see. Dr Thumb once successfully dropped out of medical school, basically making him an ascended health master and esteemed colleague.

An individual that breaks into my home, assaults me, or attempts to harm myself or others around me is not a patient until AFTER the threat to our lives has been neutralized. I was a Navy FMF Corpsman for 9 years. The same concepts applied in warfare as they would here in the states. If an enemy combatant attempts to do harm to me or those I am with, I am authorized to use deadly force, however, once deadly force has been applied and the threat is neutralized, if they are still living I then have an obligation to provide medical care, so long as that medical care does not needlessly compromise my safety or the safety of others.

In most standing armies the degree to which you are trained to engage in combat, combined with the likelihood of combat, both directly correlate to the level of battlefield first aid you are expected to learn. I think the average citizen who wishes to carry outside the home, should honestly be required to learn at least basic trauma aid for the very same reasons (along with training with the firearm you intend to carry...like at all). If you're having to use your firearm, you're already acknowledging that things have gone very wrong, so it's only logical that you be able to render aid to bystanders, being that you're already at the scene of the incident. When it comes to trauma wounds that aren't deadly outright, the odds of survival directly correlate to the length of time between initial wounding, and initial treatment. Now of course this is all being done after the danger has passed, at least in your vicinity. First rule of treating a battlefield casualty is to not become a casualty yourself. I'll also add that in a self defense case you still need to win over a courtroom, and nothing shows that you're not a bloodthirsty vigilante like attempting to render aid to your attacker (when conditions are deemed safe, of course).

Criminals will do whatever, gun, knife, fist, it doesn't matter as they will hurt you if they want to. But most regular won't harm you unless you give them a reason to.

@@dudenukem1594 That's the entire point, anyone can be armed so therefore criminals, whether private individuals or governmental, should think twice before harming or trampling on the rights of anyone else. Words on a sign do nothing to those who do not abide by the law and punishment after the fact does not save the dead or keep people free. Additionally the statistics of gun crime are heavily manipulated by anti-gun organizations and politicians as a scare tactic, many more are killed by far more mundane things, such as car crashes, and the majority of the common "40,000 deaths per year" thrown around are actually suicides which does not speak to guns being the issue but rather mental health, something banning guns will never fix. Additionally many "mass shootings" are not such and only encorporate 1-3 deaths (and even the mass shooting with the largest body count still has 3x less deaths than when a man rented a moving truck and proceeded to run people over) and in some particularly egregious manipulations will include false calls of shootings to police to bolster the numbers, a tactic favored towards the beginning of years to over inflate the early numbers and make current events appear worse than they are. All of that is to say that unless you are actively going around attempting to rob, fight, oppress, etc the people of America or intentionally visit the parts of major cities that have high crime rates (which are where the majority of Anti-Gun legislation is in place I might add which only further proves its ineffectiveness) than you are extremely unlikely to even have one pointed at you let alone actually used. And before Europe or Canada are used as "examples of good gun control" I'd also like to point out that crime rates across Europe, in some areas more than other, are still high and frankly I'd prefer the right to defend myself with a firearm than hope that I don't run into someone with a knife, bomb, acid, *illegally owned firearm*, or any other weapon with no options but to surrender myself and hope they do not still kill me anyways (which does happen and there is even video footage from CCTV of it happening). I hope this leads you to further research into the world of firearms and perhaps even giving handling them a chance one day but I also understand if you do not, it is your choice after all, but I simply ask you do not deny others the right to defend themselves and their loved ones with the most effective tools available, after all when seconds matter the police are only minutes away.

Still, guns bad though. Let's get this straight - I'm not saying they're not cool. Guns are cool as heck and playing with them is great fun in video games, so they're probably even more viscerally exciting in real life. However, easy access to something that can deal this kind of damage, at distance, over the course of a fraction of a second, with comparatively minimal training or skill required, is a recipe for disaster. Advocating for gun rights is similar to advocating for untrained common people piloting commercial jet liners - except with a much, much lower financial barrier for entry and much, much higher ease of operation. I could give you the numbers to back up my claims, but it's likely you've already seen them and decided to ignore the truth that while yes, guns are super cool, regular people should really not be allowed anywhere near the trigger. You know, like jets.

The difference is that a 70 year old grandma with a knife versus a 22 year old man with a knife will lose every time. There’s also the fact that if a government becomes tyrannical, it is the civic duty of the people to dismantle it and start anew. Hard to do that without guns.

Someone who isn't physically capable against the intruder or attacker should have as much leverage against the threat whatever it may be. Tools like this aren't only meant to protect people from people. There's animals that will stop at nothing to attack the person. I'd rather have a semi automatic or fully autoatic weapon rather than a sword, bow, or bolt/lever action as advanced as they are now to defend people I love against anything that means to do us harm.

It doesn't keep everything together until the moment of impact, it's not supposed to - that would defeat the purpose of the spread effect of shotgun BBs. It keeps everything together and sealed from the gunpowder explosion while in the barrel, but separation begins as soon as they exit the barrel.

Thanks! Lots of people have been telling me to pronounce his name properly. I had to send a few of them the video explaining how to say it. I am a reservist gun owner so I don’t have a problem with them. I want to present the information in a neutral manner so that I can educate people. I don’t want to cloud the info with my own opinions and unfortunately I think that many in my profession let their emotions rule their decisions when it comes to firearms.

Problem is, it also facilitates the growth of non-useful or harmful information too ;-) But yeah, this is good content. There are quite a few of these channels like Garand Thumb doing these sort of light-hearted but actually quite useful practical analysis of what various firearms do with human body facsimiles. It's interesting. They're trying to get hits. They buy or get donated the torsos and they do the 'science' for entertainment. I love the extra layer that Dr Chris Raynor has added to this process. Very informative, while remaining 100% entertaining.

And the only way to get an exact idea of what a round does to a human body, is to use a human body. I’d advise against that, cause that tends to bring a looot of questions you probably don’t want to answer. And it kind of gives some people a bad case of projectile vomit.

I was a Marine rifleman in Viet Nam & out in the jungle & rice paddies (aka "The Bush") we had assigned to us one navy "Corpsman" per platoon that we referred to as 'Doc'. I know that was a long time ago & things change, but I'm having trouble thinking of a scenario where a "hospital corpsman" especially a female, would be 'in combat', other than on a ship that was attacked. Please clarify.

He retired from the Corp and had a second career at the Post Office that he retired from also. The best job of my life was when I had my own clinic at WTBN, Quantico and my friend was the captain of the Rifle Team. He let me shoot at the range. I highly respect Marines because their training is the toughest of all the branches. I salute you for your hard work in Vietnam and hope you are doing well. God Bless you. 💞💖

One of my buddies from the Infantry re-upd as an Army Doc (SOCOM) . They sent him to inner city ERs to practice on gunshot wounds.

I have heard of a handful of people that should have died as a result of a gunshot wound under normal circumstances but due to "situs inversus" their organs were not quite where they are normally (organs flipped from right to left). That being said, it is rare and I doubt it matters in most cases, especially concerning the video's content.
