You're a fantastic teacher, but as a Scottish man I find it difficult to determine how to pronounce these words in my natural accent. Not to mention the pure irony of a scottish man learning gaelic from an american... Nonetheless, thank you. Keep it up.

Scottish is like the third highest european ethnicity in North America, preceded by German and Irish (North) Americans. There's quite a few of us who speak gaelige or Scottish gaelic, as a first language at that. A lot of us didn't dump it just because we were born outside of the islands.
@_Dylanm

@@impishrebel5969 I assure you that there are almost no people who speak gaelic as a first language, especially outside of Scotland. In Scotland, there are only 87,000 people who can speak "some" gaelic, out of the population of 5,500,000. As someone who was born in and has always lived in scotland, I have only ever heard one person speaking gaelic in my entire life. The language is considered to be "on the brink of extinction".

another tip for anyone learning Gaidhlig is create a word document and add all the new words that you learn so you can backtrack and practice easier. I put all the new words and phrases in categories so that they're easier to find when I need them for example: food, and then have all the names for different foods or sentence structure and have words like 'agus' (and) and 'tha' etc. it makes things so much less complicated and helps you understand the language.

Actually, I have a suggestion how to remember the Gaelic word for "beautiful". (Works for me, at least.) When I heard it, I thought of the Spanish word "brilla", which means 'it shines". (Hence, also the word "brilliant.") So, when something stands so much out to you that it seems to be shining, it is beautiful. :)

I was just thinking about the connection when you mentioned 'grotty'! I'm from around Aberdeen and I got that a lot as a kid hahaa Since I've started learning I'm finding a lot of words like that; likely Gaelic remnants that've survived, only with English spelling. Things like 'breeks' could come from briogais, cheery is easily from tìoraidh, my mum even yells 'ah?' (which could've been tha) when called from upstairs. It's fascinating the way languages learn to survive and adapt!

I immediately shouted "My taste buds are blasta! They're exploding with tasty!" And it stuck immediately haha! I just found your channel - I am absolutely loving your teaching style. Thank you for doing this! I have been learning Korean for a year and a half and I have decided I'm going to learn as many languages as I can before I die 🤣 It's so fun! I wonder how many I can learn? Vulnerable moment.. I grew up in foster care since infancy, and knew nothing of my heritage and ancestry. I did a 23 and me test a few years ago to try and get some answers. My dad's brother found me on Facebook recently and confirmed the test results! He's been slowly sharing information with me about our family. Since finding out the 23 and me results were very accurate, I've decided - what better why to dive into my origins and family history, than to learn Gaelic! I was nervous because it is not a common language, I thought there wouldn't be much out there to help me learn, but your channel has given me a lot of hope! I am so excited to start this journey!! I'll still be learning Korean, but I'm at a place where I have a good foundation in that language and just need to slowly acquire more vocab over my lifetime. So, I think I can handle learning both languages and also brushing up on my French (highschool french was not very impactful haha), while studying other languages I often find myself thinking in Korean so that's weird, but may be helpful to practice multiple at once 😅😂 I didn't realize there were people who spoke Gaelic in Nova Scotia! I am planning to explore my country (Canada) more with my little family I've made, it would be amazing to be able to speak both French and Gaelic when we do our big road trip. I don't know why I'm sharing all of this, I'm just so excited and so happy I found your channel. I'm going to watch every video of yours and study hard!

Glè mhath, a charaid! Keep going! I admire the living Gaelic culture of Cape Breton; it's quite inspiring to see Gaelic still woven into local communities. I also admire the efforts in Nova Scotia to bring Gaelic into everyday contexts, homes, and to connect learners and native speakers through apprenticeships. Those will go a very long way in strengthening Gaelic as a living, communal language.

Was led here by the epitome of Scottishness, Bruce Fummey. More would be derived from mor (big), and begging would be derived from beag (small, wee), and who doesn't like a good snog?, and kids are often accused of being grots, and mor and math would have a common linguistic root, and dona sounds like do not (do something the incorrect way), all of which be clever No, I'm not learned in linguistics. Just got mor ear for it BTW, the word "blasto" (as in blastocyst and blastocoel and blastistic) means hollow. If something were blasta, it would be filling the hollow of your stomach I've just realised that mathematics could translate to the good match, which makes sense when you're talking ledgers and building PS, subscribed before watching any of your videos
