What we touch. What we smell. What we feel. They’re all part of our reality. But what if life as we know it reflects only one side of the full story? Some of the world’s leading physicists think that this may be the case. They believe that our reality is a projection-sort of like a hologram-of laws and processes that exist on a thin surface surrounding us at the edge of the universe. Although the notion seems outlandish, it’s a long-standing theory that initially emerged years ago from scientists studying black holes; recently, a breakthrough in string theory propelled the idea into the mainstream of physics. What took place was an intriguing discussion on the cutting-edge results that may just change the way we view reality.
This program is part of the Big Ideas Series, made possible with support from the John Templeton Foundation.

@The Truth of the Matter Nothing wrong with that Equation. Yes Paradoxx, means quantic behaviour. So what's real is on the equals sign, unless we have started assigning values to symbols at any side of the equation, where by instructing a specific timeline on the Universe out of it's quantum nature.

@The Truth of the Matter having the same point with you here. As trying to get the best description of nature, we account for degrees of freedom. TOO MUCH INFORMATION my mmmmannnn :) To account for is not related to Freedom, it is related to determinism. Always best to approximate in discrete values, and include a random seed for Chaos, rather than have a body like water with a table, and giving you the velocity and position of each molecule, the better the description, the more scrambled is gonna look. So why not have a n dimensional object, say a Turing Machine, enable occurences in time we can't account for in the Universes, as in a Computer that's most respected UV-IR connection available around here and todays....Confusing ? may, as you start into looking into more precission is gets more and more fuzzed out, that's how we arrived to Fuzzy Logic in computing, for a starter's example...or like when you dispose of Time, the wave/particle equation dissoooolves...Truth of the Matter is THE man..end and period.

It depends of the point of view. Like is a reality a simulation or a reality. It's a reality from the point of view of the simulated observer, but a simulation from the point of view of the programmer, or any observer that lives in the same "reality". I even happen to think the terms reality and simulation an describe the same unique thing but can take one name or the other depending on the point of view.

I've thought of this, but i think the idea of "is it a projection or is it real?" is actually a different question. ElectroShock Perhaps you are just easy to amuse? How can you call this conversation a science? Just some people shooting the breeze. None of things they're talking about could be checked or verified by experiments. Just because they can write a whole bunch of math doesn't mean the stuff becomes a reality. Notice - they're talking about black holes like it's an established fact. Fact! It is not. And if you think of the image of a black hole they paraded recently, remember all those images of Nessy and Bigfoot. They belong the same category of mythical monsters .
@StaticBlaster
@StaticBlaster 3 роки тому
@@Jolly_Rodger Nope, not even remotely in the same category as religion. Before most of our current theories were conjectured, people in the medieval days would have not only laughed at you but I'm sure they'd have burned you at the stake. Well now we know that black holes exist (and yes it pretty much is an established fact) and invisible light (electromagnetic radiation) exists, etc. These ideas are still scientific hypotheses and perhaps the theory of everything and these hypotheses are 31st century physics that fell into the 21st century. Currently we don't have the technology to explore reality at the planck distance. It would take a particle accelerator the size of the whole milky way galaxy to explore reality at those incredibly tiny distances. I wouldn't be so rash as to throw out those ideas because they could be leading us down a path as other ideas did before our current widely accepted theories. In science, you ought to have an open mind but not so open that crazy ideas like superstition and religion take over. That my friend would be pseudoscience.

@@StaticBlaster _"Before most of our current theories were conjectured, people in the medieval days would have not only laughed at you but I'm sure they'd have burned you at the stake."_ I love that statement. But you speak of the physical realm as if there exists within the elaborate illusion, an abundance of reality. _"It would take a particle accelerator the size of the whole milky way galaxy to explore reality at those incredibly tiny distances."_ Which cannot be if we use simple logic and deduction. Since everything in the physical realm changes. Therefore, nothing of matter stays true. (If it's not true, it's fake) While reality itself is unalterable.

The idea of the universe being described as bits at the plank level makes sense when you think about the books and digital media. It's quite astounding how deeply ancient alchemical and Gnostic elements have become embedded in our most "cutting edge" science. The holographic nature of information was noted by many of the first alchemists. And indeed, almost the entire intro to this forum was steeped in ancient mysticism. Several times the speakers highlighted the importance of the Hegelian dialectic in physics, though they didn't call it that. It's a historical fact that Hegel was an alchemist, and one can draw almost exact parallels between alchemical principles and Hegel's dialectic. Even the idea of the "singularity" is a deeply Gnostic concept. There is a kind of Eschatological strain in technocratic elites today, from Elon Musk to Ray Kurzweil. I can't help but thinking that computer technology has revived a kind of new cybernetic school of alchemy that is just as mystical as it is rational. I'm wary of any elites that push Eschatological ideas, because these ideas always lead to the Eschaton... otherwise known as "the apocalypse". I think the archetype of the mad scientist should seriously be explored by more critical thinkers today before we let a group of high priests lead us into an unnecessary apocalypse. It's at least worth exploring, one would think.

it is interesting to imagine life, reality like this, like a hologram, like a matrix. Just like information is stored to create computer, vídeo games, that create the sense of depthness, of mechanics, of light, the universe itself may be like this too. An infinite amount ou information stored somewhere forming what we perceive as time and space, creating the illusion of depth, time, etc. This is a very interesting concept, it even supports the time travel theory, because, once the information of the universe is stored somewhere, it can be recreated, if they come back to be interpreted, in the state they were before. If this is true, then future can also be created, developing the way information is stored and is affected, the upcoming information must also be somewhere stored, only "waiting" to be interpreted! the way we perceive things and the reality may be a illusion, just as the concept of space and time. All this information can be stored somewhere, in an extradimensional field. What am i saying? I don't know, just playing with my thoughts!

Thank you John for raising to the general public that our reality exists as a hologram. The title is shortly wrong, but its content is right and it shows the close relation between matter, dark matter, energy and information of organizing systems. The black hole is the "cosmic machine" which arranges the organized systems in their relations among matter, dark matter and energy. The relations among these 3 crucial existential quantitative and qualitative components are quantified and qualified through the cosmic laws and expressed in information. The information in itself is not a component of existence, but it expresses the relation among the crucial components in their composition of organized systems. So, the information is used by any "cosmic machine" like black holes in their superlative role of rearranging systems in our universe. So, if it is accepted the role of such superlative "cosmic machines" as the great Einstein said "from nothing comes nothing, from something comes something", Einstein although in his theory of Relativity did not give much explanations for the quantum mechanics, because of his human death which stopped his work, he accepted that quantum mechanics was the next step, which can be explained through the superlative role of black holes as "cosmic machines", and the quantum mechanics is aligned with the relativity theory through the string theory, which clearly deducts logically and it will prove mathematically that our universe is not the only one. So, the information exists universally in dependence of the cosmic laws, which interfere with specific laws of physics, chemistry, biology, which differ from one galaxy to another galaxy, because of the size of the black hole where the galaxy is located. But, the physical forces, the chemical elements and the organic and inorganic systems differ in their arrangements from one galaxy to another, depending on the location of the black hole that they are located. So, the grand question always has been answered by the ancient philosophers and scientists, although of lost documentation which means lost knowledge, that the cosmos which means multiverses exists universally in dependence of the cosmic laws and not on the level of human knowledge. The best physicists, chemists, biologists and other scientists of associated sciences in our planet always are those, who try to know what the ancient knowledge has left documented as much as has survived from the Sumerians, ancient Hindus, who have left some knowledge as a direction that we should acknowledge because we are only one civilization of planet Earth.

Yes a theory that hinges on another unprovable theory, again, and again and again and again every theory becoming exponentially less likely each time it uses theoretical calculations to prove itself is, hardly admissable as proof in the most scientific sense of the word. I say this to say that, the "General Public" as you said is in no way convinced that we are in a hologram or a simulation. It's fun and highly entertaining to entertain these "Thought experiments" but at the end of the day (and in the beginning too) that is all it is. A thought experiment that can never be proven or disproven beyond mathematical calculations in the scrap books and on the chalkboards of Madmen. "You're have to take my word for it.. For now".

There is something that surprised me in this incredible conversation and it is something that I don’t see many scientists talking about, if ever, which is the fact that particles change their behavior when they are being observed, the double slit experiment proved that. Science has this idea of analyzing things as if they are independent, as if they are this thing that can be separated, isolated and analyzed on its own physical properties as if it is independent from the whole, cut off, but is this possible? When it is isolated, does it change the information that can be analyzed from when it was part of a system? I think that’s a very linear way of thinking, we still don’t know what Consciousness is and how it affects the physical world. For instance, would the Consciousness of an Alien being have the same affect on a particle and would the Alien get to the same conclusion as a human? Or different levels or types of consciousness lead to different results? Are the properties of the Universe fixed and once calculated will they ever change? Is the Universe based on pure mathematics or is there something else at work? Does a blackhole change its behavior when it is being observed? Does it suck in the information of the Consciousness analyzing it? Does it store on its surface only information from the physical world or also stores Consciousness information on its surface? How do we explain or understand superposition? Why when we split a certain type of particle, when we do something to one of the parts, the other part also is affected even though we didn’t do anything to it? What is connecting this particle when it has been split? What type of field of energy is this? Is it a type of electromagnetic field which the vast distances of the universe have no affect on it? If the Universe is a hologram, touching a quark is the same as touching the whole thing? And does this influence the universe as whole? Is the Universe alive? I think it is alive just like a living person and I think information is a tangible unit just like a photon is. Science doesn’t consider yet Consciousness as one of the building blocks of the Universe. When that gets put into consideration in an equation, everything is going to change.

Quantum mechanics tiptoe the edge of science and metaphysics. There will be a reckoning between them at some point. imo we are the universe and if you get into the study of consciousness and our biology there’s theory that we are singularities with respect to information. That we can accumulate information and create new things from it.

If the universe is encoded into an N - 1 dimension that would mean we need some sort of space filling curve to connect each of the regions of the encoding. If that space filling curve could somehow be a function of mass/energy could it describe the gravitational relationship across regions of the encoding? The result might be a space filling curve which has radically different paths depending on the surrounding regions. (Paths here refers to the connection of regions in the encoding and the shortest distance between 2 encodings.) It seems like you might be able to model space-time curvature mapped onto a 2D surface this way.

My 0.02 cents: I’ve been mulling over a pet theory of mine for several years, but I don’t know enough physics to put into robust terms. It’s the notion that the universe exists in two separate but interrelated phases, a bit like roadways. There’s a kind of “construction” phase, where the roads are laid out and connected to each other; and then there’s a “usage” phase, where vehicles pass along the roads in a predetermined way (now that the road system has been solidified). But it’s not static, more like how volcanoes come into being. The “construction” phase is very chaotic and random, but once solidified the laws of physics can only follow certain paths. And then there’s new construction and maintenance (of the roads, say). It’s kind of messy because you need to construct on top of existing structures, or destroy (or transform) the previous structures. This is happening continuously, but not everywhere. In our part of the universe, it’s all ordered and stable… but perhaps in pockets (or centers of galaxies or in black holes) new construction is happening. [There’s something inconsistent or not quite right about this part of the idea, and it may not even be relevant…] It may be that the Big Bang was a time of massive construction and now we’re at a stage of the universe where everything is orderly and deterministic (mostly) throughout the universe. But, remember, like volcanoes, the “construction” phase of the universe is random. There’s no “designer” (like the engineers planning a road system). It just happens, and coalesces into a way of being that must follow the “paths” or “laws” that have been laid down. But there are pockets of randomness, where things happen without antecedents or anything to cause it. They may be constructive (as happened in the Big Bang, but in a localized fashion), or they be destructive [or maybe not]. And, like a movie (that’s being produced live, e.g. a reality show), the “information” evolves as part of the “construction” phase, but they way the information is being projected into “reality” is determined by the structure that was “constructed” to make the movie visible to the audience. Another analogy is a record. (Does anyone remember what these are?) The sounds are etched into the structure of the vinyl, but don’t become “real” until the record spins and a needle connected to a playback system is put into action. The record is “fixed” (once constructed, but is dynamically formed during the construction phase); and the sound that is played is dynamic (and can be replayed over and over again, coz it’s just the emergent property of the record). Something like that anyway.

John Hawkenberry and I have at least two things in common: (1) We are both well educated people, and (2) neither of us are qualified to sit as moderator for such an important occasion. His commentary was too often banal and self-serving, and his attempt at humor was (not infrequently) an embarrassing distraction. Among the moderator's responsibilities is to "direct traffic" - he is not there to be educated while the audience observes his education. John was too often inclined to articulate his command of the subject instead of quietly listening (without interrupting) while his educators were allowed to enlighten and, well, educate. In short, as intelligent as Hawkenberry may be, he is decidedly not a physicist and rarely knew what to make of the information these brilliant minds advanced. Brian Greene or Lawrence Krauss would have been far better suited for the occasion.

Okay, here's my question. Imagine that I'm a sculptor, and I make things out of wax. I make two figurines - one of a person, one of a cat - out of the same amount of the same kind of wax (same color, etc.). Now a jerk comes by, steals my figurines, takes out a metal cup, heats it up, melts down one figurine in the cup, lets it cool, pops it out, puts the other one in, melts it down, lets it cool, pops it out. Now, instead of two figurines, we have two identical, cup-shaped blobs of wax. Haven't distinctions been lost? Haven't the positions of molecules that made one of the figurines cat-shaped and one human-shaped been lost? Isn't this information loss? I guess what I'm asking is: isn't all entropy a form of information loss? For instance, if I had hot water in a shape in a pool, where the rest was cool water, eventually they would mix together until I had an undifferentiated luke-warm pool. What makes the kind of loss in a black hole more problematic than the kinds of information loss I've just described?

They give macroscopic examples as a way of trying to make it more intuitive and clear to people who don't know the math of quantum mechanics. It is a macroscopic question in some sense but really they are talking about how quantum mechanics dictates the wave functions should be deterministic and reversible. I don't think I'm really qualified to give you a satisfying answer but I know just enough to say the question arises from very fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. I will say though that if you're looking it up look up the no-hiding theorem as a place to start. As I understand it entropy is increased by melting the wax sculptures. They converged into a mostly equivalent state where their past is hidden from us but it still exists. There are multiple macroscopic trajectories through space-time which would be indistinguishable to us. The total information (hidden + accessible) stays the same but entropy increases what is hidden. The issue with things falling into a black hole is that the wave functions of all particles are removed from existence. It's not hidden, it's gone. This would break down the math of quantum mechanics which otherwise describes what we see in experiments extremely well. Personally I feel like with topics this deep in physics you either have to buckle down and get a PhD or just go with the flow and trust the guys that have them. Their over simplified examples of phone books falling into black holes can sometimes confuse you more but it's hard to explain accurately to people like me who never learned the math of quantum mechanics. That's why they give us the short cut explanation.

I got two for you all. 1: What is the Relativity of Reality? "How can you deny my reality, when it is the only reality that I know?" 2: What is the result of a Light Prism being Refracted? "Take a basic Light Prism such as those crystals my grandma used to hang in the kitchen = to make the room glitter with rainbows of color when the sun's light hit them. Take that concept of conversion and combine it with the fallowing: We all know that if you face two or more mirrors twords each other they will infinitely reflect further and smaller each time. Then you mix that aspect, with the aspect of what happens when you fracture something. Say something like a simple slab of glass. For this example say it is a 3d rectangle slab of glass, This would mean a possible total of 6 sides. but many forget that if you were on the inside viewing out rather than from the outside in you would also have 6. So, now you have 12 sides. What would happen if that slab of glass shatter? How many possible sides of view could you get? That is the second aspect needed to create the concept of a term I coined "Refracted / Refraction" Therefore with all that in mind, what would the possible results for something like Light, visuals, energies, vibrations, ect. be if such had to go through a scenario like that?" I am serious about getting other peoples thoughts on these questions. I have wondered these things all my life, even as far back as before preschool. I just did not have a way to convey or understand completely all the terms, equations, and such at that time. I still find new ways to understand and associate things ect. Please let me know by replying below with your, "Ponder this thoughts.""

Maybe something like...? - For each individual conciousness, a material reality defined moment to moment by a non-local set of information? - Which may or may not overlap (in a Venn sense), moment to moment, with the information sets of other individual conciousnesses...? - So as to be able to interact with them in various physical ways, to a greater or lesser extent (or not at all)...? - The result, for each individual, being the realm they at that moment perceive and find themselves to be in...? 🤔 hmmm.... So how would the rules be set...? _"And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence..."_

Here's a thought... What if the black hole is actually like a worm hole portal but in SLOW Motion on the Cosmic scale. As often is the case, the same principles repeat, as above as below kind of way. So that ANYTHING going into a Black Hole is transported somewhere else, and eventually the black hole evaporates. And thus its like a worm hole opening and closing. Perhaps with a time dilation as well. And then there is the idea of what would happen to consciousness in a black hole? And if it did transport it all to another place, but it only arrived once it EVAPORATED, how much time has passed? Perhaps time has slowed so much that what took hundreds of years or more could be a matter of hours or days for those who passed through it? We also should realise that as matter we are 99.9% empty space, so being compressed into a black hole would be even more easier than compressing data. As the gravity pressure would be like shrinking putting everything closer together filling the "air gaps" as it were. If it all happened by a machine in an instant of a second it would be a type of matter transporter. For if one considers that consciousness EVOLVED before Matter... we have an UNDIVIDE and UNCONQUER way of getting our thinking back from the tired old augments of creation vs evolution from biased extremes. That Consciousness Evolved out of the Eternal Omnipresent Energy and took on bodies in matter, which combines, spirit life force, intelligence awareness, evolution of body and mind and spirit knowledge to become ever more... in a new body each time as we grow and evolve... potentially. And since all is energy and all energy is information... it is possible that HACKERS can interfere with OUR Reality Perceptions and Enslave us for their purposes... this is written in religious texts, the father of lies deceiver angel of light kind of thing. So the religion hinders the true spiritual evolution of man by taking on old traditions that are like mind programs that hinder our abilities, by taking away our needed OPEN Minds to Expand beyond previous limitations made by ignorant assumptions believed too sacred to question. Ice Tea anyone? We are not proven to be alone. In fact it seems hidden in plain sight, that the religions that warn of these Issues, are in fact created by the Hackers of mind programs. Such keeps us stuck in the illusion of the program. If this is the case, then we are in a programmable reality with predictable factors that can be like prophecies coming true. And the prophecies say we wake up and see and learn to evolve back our spiritual power and start to unlock our greater mind and spirit power and start to reign and create paradise on earth. But the twisted versions turn it into a struggle of diversions that prevent us from learning how to be our greater potential, keeping us in a mind cage that thinks it is free with what it has been taught to believe and hold sacred. To break outside of the box, will have the matrix fight back!

Good thing we have Theoria Apophasis. He can explain this. Black holes are a part of it - considering they are constantly pumping an enormous amount of hydrogen (protium) into this universe.

17:40 what about ice and boiling water? Both come to be the same at room temperature after a while - did they start different and end up the same? Different forms of the same thing - but still started different ended the same - Also - isn't everything essentially made up of energy bits so everything is - at the smallest level - the same?

Crazy as it sounds, this is the theory that holds most currency with me. Maybe because Quantum physics and so mechanics is scientificaly proving its real worth... Scarry indeed, whos in control, why are we here, what is it all. These very same questions take on such different value under these beliefs. Always pondering the confusion..

the question bugging me is where did all that information "come from" "that is to say if the universe was once the size comparable with a plank length then by this reasoning the "initial conditions of the universe could be described with a single bit..

That's an interesting point. Some information comes from us - from life. From life and its concomitant free will be exercised over the course of billions of years. Somehow I doubt that's enough information though.

Susskind is pretty cool. I've learned a TON from the Stanford lectures he has online. A coworker of mine said he was at Stanford one day and saw him, and approached him and thanked him for all of his videos. He said that Susskind just walked away. That really surprised me - he comes off as pretty nice whenever I've seen him speak. Maybe he was just having a bad day. Or maybe he gets that SO MUCH that it gets old - I could definitely understand that.

Let's not overlook t'Hooft - I've always been incredibly impressed with him. Not saying he's right about everything, but he's pretty ingenious. And I love it that he's maverick enough to buck the community when he feels like it.

what practical application would emanate by answering the questions at hand? more superior command of energy, motion, mechanics, mathematics, power, art, vision, economy, relationships? im not sure but im sure it will kick start some brilliant mind somewhere to create something that will profoundly change how we interact physically and socially.

The deeper you dig on this topic, the more you see that it's the most rational explanation. Susskind will be Einstein in 50 years when everyone wakes up.

It's part of the solution. I think it's something so profound that we may have another understanding of reality and better theories even before this holographic view can even be used to do useful stuff or integrated in an actual theory of everything (if such a thing is even possible).

@@jojolafrite90 all the information about everything is infinite and eternal present and stored in the Quantum field (Quantum Consciousness) but the objects made of matter and a bit of that information can get pulverised, crushed to, reduced to its elementary particles who then afterwards can be used for the construction of other objects .... it's like a 3D printer : information and brute material for building a object .... Our physical body also are returns to ashes but our spirit (our consciousness or profound information of ourselves, souls) is returning to the Universal Quantum Consciousness or "God" ....
