Looks really good, initially I saw the pack size and got worried but seeing the comparison between the Alpkit and the Thermarest it really shows how much wider the Alpkit is!

Cheers for that Paul, had been looking at upgrading my mat before Xmas as I had been using UL80 and hadn’t seen any reviews of this on UKposts. Bought a Vango Trek 3 air mat to use with the Alpkit EZ Sleeper foam mat which saw me through winter, it’s definitely one of the things I’ve put off forking out on.

Great review, I put my sleeping pad inside a sleeping bag liner, this makes it warmer and quieter. I then use the sleeping bag as a quilt. Not for everyone but works for me. 😊

Looks like a great pad. I have a very similar design one, Ecotek Hybern8. I really recommend it if you are a smaller person, cheaper lighter and Rvalue of 4.5, otherwise I'd go with this Alpkit. Love the videos Paul, keep it up

Nice one Paul. Good review. For me, durability is a key factor. Manufacturers endeavour to make their pads as light a possible, but the compromise usually means the material is very susceptible to being punctured. Once that happens the pad is next to useless after a repair, and the user ends up on the ground freezing their bits off at 3. o'clock in the morning. Whoever can find that sweet spot between light weight and robustness will get my money every time. Alpkit, in my experience, are very good at providing value for money 'quality' kit.

I have got one of these had it bikepacking a few weeks ago in 2 degrees was fine. Also had it in the hammock last week that got down to about 4 degrees no problems it slips about a bit that’s only because of the single layer hammock. So been used for 4 nights I recommend.

Thanks for the review, Paul. I’m shopping for an affordable mattress in this catagory. At the moment, I’ll have to go with the Paria Outdoors similarly constructed mattress, at 3.5 R Value (not the best but not terrible), and at $85 here in the US. Greetings from NorCal. Don’t see much Alpkit stuff here in the states but seems like a good deal. I have an X-Therm which I like except it is noisy and sounds like I’m rolling around on potato chips, I guess you guys call them crisps.

Thats the kind of pad I've been looking for! Two of my tents are narrow at the footend, making it not suited for two regular square pads in the foot end. So I need two pads that are narrow in the foot end and wider up top. Mummy shaped. I have two pads like that already, but they a as narrow as the thermarest and not good below 5 degr. C. The Whisper being mummy shaped and going down to 0 degr. C makes quite a difference!

Thanks for the review. I think this would appeal to those on a budget who mainly wild camp in very mild weather. R 2.5 and 720 grams. The positives would be width and price for sure. Cons are R value and weight.

Looks a great bed if weight is not an issue. I would have been tempted myself if it was lighter. Can't really justify getting the thermarest just yet, but my exped is only a little heavier and weighs less than the whisper. Thanks for sharing Atb mark

I have the Whisper, I got from Alpkit when it was on sale for €63. As my camps are mostly in the mild Alicante mountain climate, it's perfect for my needs and at that price I think I picked up a bargain. It also fits into the Alpkit Hunka Bivvy helping make an effective and a very affordable sleep system. I'm surprised this was the first review of it on UKposts, although with your audience I hope it gains a few sales as it's definitely a quality product.

Heavy for such a low R value. It looks like it packs to the same size as my Exped downmat but is 200 gms heavier and not as insulated. Then again it is wider so that would count for the extra weight. As a budget pad for warmer nights it is ok but it is also noisier then the downmat which is very quiet. Pity they discontinued them.

Bought two, for my two kids. (8/11) one for wild camping. Car camping, No brainer at the price of a thermarest, Not super light, but the material is tougher. 25 in wide. £67 in the sale. Happy days

That mat looks the same as the Stoic Kasker mat from Bergfreunde. It's on sale for 58 euro's at Bergfreunde. The specs and insulation are the same.

If you want to try out this mat to make a video on? Only a few people have made a video on this mat. The Sea to Summit Camp Self-Inflating Foam Sleeping Mat.. I have all 3 and one I like the best Is the Tapered - Large (78 x 25 x 1.5 inches) Keep up the good work on making video.

The lifetime guarantee is worth the xtra cost. The insulation is better, and you will rip something. The seams will open at some point. Especially if you use the chair solution they've got. Get the Alpkit if you're a summer camper for 2 weeks a year.

Would 2x Numo @ 1.7R = 3.4R? I think they're meant to be additive? It's 350g which doubled up would be 700g, a bit lighter than the Whisper at 720g. Option of using one or the other or sharing, though downside is the faff of 2 pads on top of each other.

Great review. Looks like a good value option for most of the year. Have you tried any of the big agnus mats? The rapide sl insulated looks like a good option with an r value of 4, less than 600g, and £140. Not an xterm, about half the price.

I got a Rapide to try, super comfortable! It has that nice cradling effect with larger side baffles and is a good thickness too. I ended up going with the Sea to Summit Etherlight Women's despite it being pricier, as it was nice and wide in the hip area and a bit lighter than the Rapide (which I could only get in narrow) but the Rapide was warmer and a really high quality, comfortable pad in my experience 👍

I need to upgrade my mat in the future, but my wife will kill me if I ask for any more camping gear lol, I’m using a vango trek pro standard mat which is narrow and narrower near the feet, good R rating tho and 5 cm thick

Its a bit "heavy" for an ultralight pad Paul? Also the "r" value isnt that great either. I think it has a way to go before it will challenge the likes of Thermarest

Hi Paul you're still using breath to inflate. How about doing a review on the tiny rechargeable inflators that you can buy. I bought one off Amazon and it was great. It inflated my pad in seconds and deflated it too, battery life was amazing ,a small and lightweight bit of kit. have a bash!

im replying to myself first alpkit pad i had iv still got 20 years later and its took some abuse and still going strong been slashed buy friend i loaned it too and he put it on top broken bottle buy side Ullswater i said to him check ground first in case of idiots he didn't listen thought id never be able fix that but the included patches fixed it was amazed the guy was friend offline he had never left London met up with him in penrith loaned him everything good memory's 2 weeks cycle touring the lakes he was scared of the sheep and the wildlife was pretty funny

I used to sleep on the original karrimat in the 80s. I was young then. 40 years later I prefer the comfort and also the compact size of my exped. If you can sleep on a multimat then go for it. They are good, if bulky.

One of my mats, a mil 1cm closed cell is great. Even though I'm mostly a side sleeper, but then, I'll sleep anywhere and don't toss much. But... It mUassive! And... On a day to day, the therm xlite nxt is so comfy and warm. Just got to be careful. My v thin foam mat is a sitting pad during the day and a therm a rest guardian by night 😂.

Looks good, not much more expensive than a 0 r value cheap thin pad. Thick, wide, not too heavy. The thermarest is noisy by comparison for sure!

I used it in below freezing conditions albeit with a foam mat a 850 fill quilt and a bivvy. It was very effective and comfortable.

I agree, especially when it weighs 720 grams. My Thermarest Uberlite is around that R value but only weighs 235 grams. My Thermarest XTherm NXT is R7.2 and weighs 453 grams. True, they are much more expensive. I just enjoy a good night's sleep.

More than enough r value for most people as it is good to 0 degrees. At the price point for a wide comfy mat it’s a no brainer. Thermarest is ridiculously expensive for what it is, overrated and overkill for most people.

Great sized pad that. Being 6’3 I find a thermarest far to small and narrow, and if I get the largest that they do these days, it’s basically a mortgage payment to buy one. I’ll stick to my KilosGear pad. Super comfy, way cheaper and by far warm enough for me. Alpkit is a great brand too, great video Paul 👌🏻🫵🏻

The decathlon insulated pad is just as wide, has a 3.3 r value and is cheaper, also the bag it comes in acts as an inflation bag, decathlon itself also has a great warranties when it comes to their hiking gear!

Alpkit products can be more expensive because of their climate commitments. They are a small British company who try to use recycled materials whereas Decathlon is a huge international company who don't use as many recycled materials.

This is good timing, I have a pipe dream 600 and a trekology UL mat (I know this is budget) I was up kinder Sunday and it was 4 ish overnight and I was cold, the bag was up to the job, the question I ask is how much of a difference does a mat like this vs the trekology make?

The UL80 I found cold even in Summer. Whilst it lasted. Started to deflate after a few uses. Buy cheap buy twice indeed 🙄

A great deal. Without effective insulation (ie you feel any cold areas underneath you, without sleeping bag) imagine the ground as a cold sump under you sapping heat from you.. That's how I picture it anyhow. A thin foam mattress (which in day could be your do all sitting pad) and an alum reflector would greatly improve your setup for little cost.

It is a bit heavier than many insulated mats, however I didn't mind that as the wider shoulder area really makes a difference.

Waving a bag round in a small tent to fill my thermorest.....well I do end up laughing a lot And my mat does eventually get filled. Must be a nack that I have failed to learn yet. But that sock bag looks much simpler and you aren't having to clip and unclip it all the time!
