Tyrion Lannister’s favourite uncle was lost at sea eight years ago, on a quest to find a sword in Valyria. What happened to him? Is Gerion connected to Euron Greyjoy, the corsair king, or the Shrouded Lord? Is Gerion the father of the Sailor's Wife’s daughter, Lanna?

If that's true then maybe fans are putting too much stock into R+L=J, perhaps there is no secret identity or importance behind Jon Snow's mother (i.e someone like the Fisherman's daughter) and GRRM is letting the R+L=J or B+A=J hype go on so he doesn't discourage some readers from wanting to finish reading the series (assuming the last two books come out within the next 5 to 10 years) Don't get me wrong, I hope R+L=J is confirmed in the books as well, but with GRRM you have to expect the unexpected.
@michaelhenry3234
@michaelhenry3234 5 років тому
+Marcus Drake It's hinted at *so* strongly in the books, it'd be impossible for Jon's mother to have no significance. I mean, a decent chunk of Ned's chapters was dedicated to adding mystique to the Tower of Joy. I suspect GRRM will confirm R+L=J but will add a twist to it. It won't go down exactly as it did in the show.

One thing to remember, and the omission of the 5 year jump is part of it, is the authors don't usually pore over their works in the kind of detail fans do. Gerion isn't so much a character as a plot device. He's there to show all Lannisters aren't like Tywin, to show the lengths people will go to to get a Valyrian Steel sword, and how dangerous the ruins of Valyria are.
@Hexen_Wulf
@Hexen_Wulf Рік тому
But it's also Martin, and he doesn't seem the type to leave a loose thread without knowing where it will eventually lead.
@duffman18
@duffman18 Рік тому
@@Hexen_Wulf he named certain Lords after Muppets characters, and got bored of naming Essos cities so he eventually just started copying H.P. Lovecraft city names. He's not so anal about it all as you're suggesting. He is when it comes to important things, that have to do with the plot. But yeah, Gerion probably exists just to explain further how not all Lannisters are bad, and how Tyrion and Jaime loved one uncle more than they loved their own father and that's why they bonded a lot even though Tyrion and Cersei never did (which gives a good reason as to why Jaime let Tyrion go free, and allowed Tyrion to kill Tywin). It also explains why the Lannisters went to the trouble of melting down the big Stark valaryan steel sword to make two smaller swords, one for the family and one for King joffrey, because they'd have no need to do that if they already had a valaryan steel sword in the family. And the fact Tywin has gone round all the houses trying to buy a sword off them also explains how desperate he is to have one, and how much his family matters to him, he really does care only about the Lannister family and barely anything else, really. Tywin might pretend to be principled at times (hence joining Robert in his rebellion) but it's all for the sake of the Lannister family. But yeah we probably don't need to ever learn what happened to Gerion. It works better as a way of pointing out that nothing that goes to the ruins of valayria ever returns. Because that part of the book I remember very strongly, even though it's been like 7+ years since I last read them. Gerion is the _MAIN_ example of that. To show how dangerous it is. Because he had a large and very well trained and kitted out army (cos of the Lannister riches) and nobody came back from it, not one person. It's better that way. It makes Valaryia more mysterious and much more dangerous sounding, and explains why people aren't making expeditions to there all the time in search of valaryian steel themselves. It also makes the valaryian steel swords still in existence all the more valuable and explains why they're passed down from heir to heir, instead of say burying them with the owner. Because the ones that exist are the only ones that ever will exist, so short of splitting a big one into 2 like they did to the Stark sword, they can't make any more. They can only work on them to forge them into new things, nothing else (and even then, very very few blacksmiths in the world know how to work with valayrian steel either) But they're one of the only things that can kill the white walkers. So they're needed. And it ties into the fact every region of the world has their own Azor Ahai myth. It makes sense that the valaryian blood magic necessary to create the material represents the magic of fire, they probably had to mix in dragon's blood with the steel or something. Because valaryians loved their blood magic. And probably used dragon's fire to melt it down in the first place. If Gerion was seen in the books, still alive, I think it could spoil all of that. And the current info we have is as much of an end to the thread as anything else would be. We know that nobody who goes to Valaryia ever comes back, so his story is over.

The thing is Rhaegar believed Aegon was The Prince Who Was Promised, not the baby he was having with Lyanna (he was probably expecting it to be a girl). He had to do things in a way that all three of his children were legitimate. Ellia was a Martel, and the Dornish don't put the stigma on bastards and polyamory the way the rest of Westeros does. She could easily have been on board, so long as her children were still in line. Targaryeans also don't have much problem with multiple wives, in general. They just haven't practiced it to avoid problems with The Faith. However, The Faith doesn't like the incest, but the Targaryeans normalized it for themselves, so Rhaegar probably figured he could sell it once it was already done. After all, at that point he still looked like a better choice than his father so the political realities of the realm might have been more important than a point of morality. Lyanna would have been the stumbling block, however. She wasn't from a culture that practices polyamory and was actually dismissive of Robert as a husband because of his multiple affairs. Would she be on board with being second wife?
@maylabrown4584
@maylabrown4584 9 днів тому
@@carlrood4457 Late reply I know but I wanted to say that while polygamy not being commonly accepted by every one would be a small problem for Rhaeger's Plan going along smoothly, the much bigger problem was his father's insanity. Remember that by that point the Mad King had already fully believed his own son was plotting against him (which he all but certainly was) so him out of the blue starting a polygamist relationship with *another* high-ranked royal woman would be seen as a blatant attempt at creating another powerful alliance. Sadly, even if every one was fine with a big Royal Harem, Aerys wouldn't be :-(

I have some advice/a little story for anyone who hasn't read the books watching this. So here it goes: I actually originally was a show-only watcher as well. Mostly because I was somewhat scared off by the length of the books (quite a long term investment) and especially because I'm someone who generally doesn't really like to go through the same story twice too often. So I figured, I've seen the show and I know what's gonna happen, do I really want to read the books? I eventually realised I was spending hours watching videos about the books like this one and reading up on the lore online, etc. so I figured I might as well actually read the damn books if I was going to spend so much time investigating them anyway. I have to say, for me at least, it was completely worth it. The books really do sketch a much more developed world and there are many, many things which are very different in them. Even entire characters get such a different grounding in the books. Like Robert Baratheon. On the TV show he's fine and I think Mark Addy did a great job, but in the books he has a sort of arc as well where aside from things like Lyanna he also (sort of spoiler alert) fears that he wasn't a good king. That he was like Aerys. The relationship between him and Ned Stark I also find much more touching in the books. I feel like you get a much better sense of their bond and who Robert is as a person. That's just one example, there's just so much more depth to every single aspect. Stuff the show never even touches upon even. So basically, what I'm saying is that if like I was you're in doubt about reading the books because "after all I've already seen the show" do it anyway, you won't regret it.

I'm a Dayne, what did you expect?), King of Blackmont, Prince of Dorne, King of the Stepstones and also became Sword of the Morning. When Tyrion was younger he wanted to tour the Free Cities like his uncles had but Tywin refused him because he thought Tyrion would shame the family again. @JayGriffinblaze
@JayGriffinblaze 7 років тому
The disputed lands are constantly warring: Tyrosh, Myr, Lys etc and Pentos. There may be set routes of travel available at the time of Gerion;s journey going to Braavos, from where another ship along the coast could easily be chartered, but none going directly across the Stepstones or on to Volantis. Also depending on the time of the year the Narrow Sea can be quite volatile, some sailors stay closer to the shore which means all the way up to White Harbour and across to Braavos and then back down again, stopping off via Pentos. Sam boarded a ship to Braavos when trying to get to Oldtown with Gilly and Maester Aemon, but he died before he could get a ship heading to Oldtown.

@GumaroRVillamil
@GumaroRVillamil 6 років тому
Sam stops in Braavos because it's on the way South from the Wall and East Watch by the Sea. It makes no sense for Gerion to go around the South of Westeros, around Dorne, and then travel all the way North again to Braavos, if he's going East to Volantis and Valyria. Lys or Tyrosh are more logical stopping points. Braavos is a huuuge detour. Possible, but not very sensical.

There's another theory that I thought might have been in this. In ADwD, when we go to the Windblown, we see one sellsword with blonde hair named Lewis Lanster. "Lanster" sounds suspiciously like "Lannister", and he has the golden hair to match it. I thought this might be Gerion.

If you're touching the Sailor's Wife and Brightroar and Gerion, why don't you mention that Sailor's Wife might be Tysha and Lanna her and Tyrion's daughter. Also you forgot the Volantis conspiracy which states that Volantees killed King Tommen the Second and whole his crew and triarchs took all of his possessons. Gerrion met the same fate since he too stayed at Volantis before moving forward.

@superdash91 7 років тому
Nick Dzink there is a big theory out there about tyrion and the sailor wife. I heard the sailor is a reference about tyrion past
@Captain-Jinn
@Captain-Jinn 7 років тому
The largest issue with this theory is that we're told that her husband is dead. This was told to us by Yna (a whore and maegi) when she tasted the Sailor's Wife's blood, and that "her love was dead", and "if he ever should come back to her it would be as a corpse". But, we all know blood magic can be elusive and cause misdirection. By dead it could mean the person that Tyrion was is dead. That traumatic experience it was definitely what made Tyrion the cynical father-murdering man he is today. A few other facts that could tie the two together: -The Sailor's Wife speaks to Arya in the common tongue, so she's a bilingual whore that speaks Westerosi. -She prays for her husband that she lost at sea when she was no older than Lanna (14, a year older than Tyrion when they were married) It's very much possible, but at the same time there's not enough evidence to make a final verdict on it. I don't see what in Tyrion's past made him a sailor, but it just as easily could be a lie in the same way Tyrion lies to Sansa about who Tysha was.
@sierramikekilo6925
@sierramikekilo6925 7 років тому
The mention "lost at sea" could refer to her being shipped to Braavos by Tywin. Evey time she looks at the sea, at west, at the direction of Lannisport, she may wonder where he is. There is a whole ocean between them. Then he is "lost at sea". She may have became a whore for lack of option, being shipped to Braavos against her will and not speaking the language. It could be the only way to survive. But... Wouldn't it be mocking Tyrion bedding only men who married her?

The biggest clue that the Sailor's wife is Tysha lies in Tywin's answer to Tyrion's question about where he had banished her off to before being killed by crossbow. Tywin said, "Wherever whores go." Braavos is a major hotspot for sex tourism and world renowned for its courtesans. Tywin wasn't being obnoxious. He was actually telling his son where she was sent off to before Tyrion killed him.

About that thing that killed so many ppl in Valyria. I forgot her name but there was a Targ princess who went to Valyria with her dragon, Balerion. When she came back a year or two later she had these really creepy and smokey parasites that supposedly breathed fire and were the size of a forearm. She shortly died becuse it was uncurable and it is said that her insides were eaten up and scorched. However, the parasites did not bother Balerion. _HOWEVER_ Balerion came back with a massive scar. Wwe have to remeber that this was during the apex of Balerions' power and strenght. He was strong and huge could easily defeat any other dragon in the Targs arsenal. However, he came back with a massive scar on his body and the scar never properly healed. His skin grew back but he made a massive scar tissue. So whatever gave Balerion that scar is probably the same thing that killed all the poor souls that ventured there. Another thing is that the Targs were not the only dragonriders to escape Vayria. There was one other dragonrider, Aurion. He went to Valyria with an army of 30,000 troops on his great dragon. This dragon also died. It may be that the 14 Flames were still active and that they spewed out rocks and hot magma that killed the dragon and his rider and also wounded Balerion, but why couldn't they just dodge it? Like the much of the 14 Flames fell under the sea and some are active but they are not horrible. A dragon could easiy dodge a flying rock. So there is something in Valyria that is stronger than Balerion at his prime, a dragon and his rider at their prime and tens of thousands of troops.
