Just suggestion... I know it is good for marketing, clicks and all that stuff, but It would be much better to include episode number in the title... I had to check tabs a few times, then descriptions, then tab again until I figured what is first and what is the second episode. Plus I watched the first episode hour ago and the second one was announced for 3rd May. I managed it somehow but in this way, it would be hard to follow all related episodes. Now to mention for someone who just randomly finds the link a few months later. Btw. videos are great.

Well if it makes you feel better. This video was published like a week ago. This stuff wasn't available at the beginning of quarentine. You and some of the other people watching are part of the first to watch it. @@CalebHimself For me I'm 21, facing the realities of growing up and adulthood. Very much miss the days (2013 to 2018 mainly) of going home after school and hopping on Xbox with the lads. Black ops or minecraft or just by myself on Skyrim or Zelda. Back when i could waste hours on games and not care. And I don't really feel that time was wasted. I spent a lot of time on games but it's not literally allll I did. We went on the bikes a lot and in those later years (16 to 19) we started doing a Lot of other things, you can probably guess.. I can do now everything I didn't do then, and more. I'm nostalgic about those gaming days and I'm really glad I had them, even if I sometimes think I could have done other things more. I'm glad we had that and there's no need to regret. We got everything in front of us

This is why I love jordan peterson. He touches on this subject often, about how the delay of gratification can improve your life. With our ancestors, instead of the hunters consuming the food they catch all at once, they would share it and ration it out. Or how running that extra mile would make reaching that finish line that much more enjoyable to reach.

As crazy as this sounds one simple thing that slowly changed my life was the day I started wearing a wrist watch to check the time, so I wouldn't have to look at my phone and inevitably get distracted by one thing after the other. Your phone is the worst way to check the time, because it leads you down a rabbit hole of life distractions instead of simply checking the time

Steps for those not in much time: 1. Hard reset - cut out phone, tv, social media, drugs, gambling, porn etc for 24hrs; basically be without anything for 24hrs and just be on your own/with friends etc 2. Rewiring Phase - ongoing process of getting away from dopamine. (that's all he said)

Thank you so much for this bro. All we need to do as a generation is to use our phones only for something important. Gaining endless knowledge is a waste. Learning 1 thing and applying it successfully is much more beneficial. This will hopefully be the last video i watch on self-improvement. I am not going to open youtube now. I needed the push that i somehow got through this video. I realised i am a youtube addict and it won't change until i stop taking content of any kind and focus on applying whatever i have learnt till now. May be this is the dopamine of success anticipation which is speaking, but i am hellbent in pulling myself out of this addiction. Thank man. 🤘

This is why getting older scares me, I always noticed I had a love for the more gritty hard things like playing defense in most sports or weight lifting, running far physical play that almost everyone hates. I noticed that it comes and goes and I never really understood why, so I started searching across the internet listening to different perspectives, philosophies, standards, and even religions. None seemingly worked for me (stoicism was very interesting however) but I always noticed i got motivated at the incorrect times, or I could surge up an immense amount of motivation at the correct time out of no where, and sometimes I would enjoy doing something specific and then I won't the next day, I started to think it was just life. However after hearing that dopamine directly effects pleasure or enjoyment and it can dip low if you constantly tap into it it all makes a lot more sense now. From scrolling on my phone to listening to music to playing video games to celebrating over the smallest things, eating fatty foods, porn, the things we all wait to do at a certain point of our day almost guaranteedly are the things holding us back from enjoying the things that we want to do to achieve much bigger things then eating a burger like working out, or instead of phing it up gaining that courage out of no where to talk to that girl, or instead of scrolling and playing video games doing literally anything else that can ACTUALLY improve ourselves. I'll try to hard reset tomorrow sounds very difficult but I can definitely atleast try. Getting older scares me because ill be far more prone to these dopamine traps and have far less energy and mobility or get away from it.

Thank you for the hint to the book "Hooked". I have read it months ago and think it is the perfect additional food for thought to your epic series. 😊 It described how manufacturers lure consumers in being dependant. Not only in the age of computers but even many years ago. Even if a consumer harms his personal life by the bad smells of a "lifestyle" asset he uses the industry seems to have a solution. Like artificial smells stronger than pet smell. If you look how much people fork out for that the better solution would be change the habits and give the attention to humans - you can interact with.

At my worst mentally currently, have struggled with depression for 6 years and a porn addiction for 8-9 years. Long story short I took a gap year from going to college, I decided I’m not down to go to actual college due to “general ed” and I believe for the most part it’s all Bs. Started going to college for a certification in graphic design thinking it would be a big turning point for me but it only made me feel more unmotivated due to all the hours of homework these drawing/ painting classes were. I dropped out last week and quit my job.. everything just felt like too much. I’m think I’m ready to turn things around mentally and I know that I can do it, it’s obviously just a difficult thing after adapting to my shit mindset as “normal”. I’ll come back to this when I’m better and update.

I am struggling to control my eating urges. My brain is constantly finding excuses to seek that reward for having performed a hard activity or having a productive day at work. It's exhausting to fight with your own mind, but I tell myself that this is necessary for me to stay healthy and build my dream life.
@shahissbb
@shahissbb 4 роки тому
I really like this concept as most people don't see that things in our phones and games are highly addictive. Just wanted to comment on the science behind dopamine detox (med student here so hoping my info is relatively reliable). For dopamine pathways there are 4 different paths in the brain, and the mesolimbic is the largest contributor to addiction. With rehab for drug use the goal is to up regulate the number of dopamine receptors over time, so that the dopamine released by normal activies will start to give the appropriate stimulation. What happens with continuous dopamine exposure from porn, cigs, drugs, social media etc is that the body will respond by downregulating dopamine receptors which decreases sensitivity to dopamine released. Therefore you will seek things that release even more dopamine to make up for the reduced sensitivity. That's why drug and porn addicts will go to harder drugs and more violent or harmful porn, in search of greater reward. So in summary, the role of a dopamine detox is to up regulate your dopamine receptors so that normal activies like talking to people and studying will give more reward. However, this means that if you go back to extreme dopamine release, your body would be overwhelmed. So it's best to limit your dopamine intake even after a detox.

You are partially correct. Here's the bigger picture which in my view, dismantles the idea of a "dopamine detox"... He doesn't understand neurotransmission. He's parroting social media oversimplification of the brain. His goal is good, but his info is wrong. Here's the truth. Sorry it's long. Dopamine is one of over 100 identified neurotransmitters. It's also not just a reward neurotransmitter. Every neurotransmitter can transmit 4 or more different messages...not just one. And neurotransmitters have different receptor sites which have different functions. For example GABAa, GABAb, GABAc...for the neurotransmitter GABA. Then there are also subcategories of those different receptor sites. So dopamine has millions of receptor sites, with multiple sub-receptor sites at each primary site, each sub-receptor site capable of getting 4 or more different messages. Times that by 100 types of neurotransmitters across 100 synaptic sites (not synapses, the receptor sites in the synapse connections) on each dendrite with 40+ dendrites per neuron...100 billion neurons. If you alter one neurotransmitter, all the others readjust to maintain homeostasis. The systems that capitalize on our reward responses don't just use dopamine influence. They capitalize on a cascade of changes that also involve hormones. It's all one very complex system involving neurotransmitters, hormones, and synaptic growth/pruning. You've heard of oxytocin being the bonding hormone? Then why at higher amounts does it cause violence instead of stronger cuddles? And it does cause violence...unrelated to any person. Higher serotonin, the "happy" neurotransmitter, can cause depression...but it also lowers anxiety. How can it do that if it just makes you happy? Acetylcholine, the "stimulating" neurotransmitter, causes lack of focus/hyperactivity if too LOW. How? It's stimulating. So it should make you hyperactive if it's too high, right? Histamine makes your skin itch, but it's neurotransmitter. How can it do that if it just makes your skin itch? Neuroscience is far more complex than "dopamine is the reward neurotransmitter". You can't do a dopamine detox. It's impossible. You are doing a stimulation reset. Even that stimulation reset is short term. You brain has physically rewired to the stimulation. It has grown new connections and pruned away others. Receptor sites for the dopamine are now missing in some parts and overgrown in others...in addition to the downregulation of the receptors that you noted. This detox idea is garbage. It will take a while for the brain to reset from problematic behaviors and unhealthy environments. It will require people to work at it. Likely for months or over a year. He is setting people up for failure by focusing on dopamine. You don't fix a car's engine by just changing the type of gasoline (petrol).

It's funny how when you feel bad about watching youtube or doing nothing all day in order to not think about it too much you waste even more time. Thanks for the video man. I think my biggest problem is that i'm afraid of my own thoughts. Didn't have the best childhood so i have a lot of dark thoughts. And to cope with the depression and to not show my family how i truly feel (they have their problems too i don't want to add more) i just shut myself down and watch videos all day until i forget even who i am. I'm gonna try this detox and i really hope i'll succeed. Every time i tried something similar i would fall right where i was at start. Truly doing 1 step forward 2 steps back. I also don't believe in myself anymore. I failed so many times i feel like a failure. Almost 6 years of failing at everything i try to do. I don't know where I'm going with this comment. Maybe the roots of my problems are deeper than i thought. Too many problems in my life that are out of my control i don't even know where to start.
