agreed. i had terribly trained teachers trying to educate me about climate change when I was like 8 and they spread misinformation like "the earth's temperature is gonna rise 1 clsius per year" which is observably not true. and then when i got a geography teacher in high school who spent basically a month ONLY teaching us that climate change was a hoax (btw the bartard sexually harrassed students) it was not hard at all for me to believe him. we need well trained honest people spreading awareness to children when they are in a age in which they can understand

Its not that people don't care its like the example Anthony used, if people could go on Amazon and see the environmental impact of their purchase before they buy, if they could see all the plastic waste, if they could see the dirty and dark pig pen factory farms use on the label of their meat before they buy it. Out of sight out of mind, slavery never ended they just created mass incarceration. Slavery and capitalism go hand in hand, only moving from a for profit economy to one that prioritizes people and the environment can make the difference we need to combat climate change. The system of neoliberalism is often covert and insidious.

@mistermoonjelly
@mistermoonjelly 3 роки тому
@@themanofquagga That's why we need to reduce and reuse. Although I still recommend people to recycle, solely because I don't want them to do the alternative: throwing them in the trash, I agree with you a bit. So many people focus too much on "recycling" and not "reduce and reuse" which are more effective and immediate solutions when you implement them in your day to day life. Reduce your consumption of bottled water, donate your old clothes for others to use, wash and reuse glass pickle jars (wonderful for storage!), if you only had a sandwich in your kid's ziplock bag please use them again for two to four more times- I promise you they CAN be used again- etc.

While I still recommend people to recycle based off of research I've done into plastic bottles specifically they actually can't be reused bc the type of plastic they are made from take so long to melt down so all those bottles you recycle are just getting thrown into land fills so I think the best method would be to try and cut down on plastic bottle use all together

As a university student majoring in climate science I really appreciate this video and the scientists Anthony spoke with, its a tough career. I liked how Shaz spoke about trying to motivate people’s feelings because as humans we don’t always act with our logic, often it’s our feelings, and that’s the key to getting people to drive change. I also appreciated the Geoengineer explaining that geoengineering methods can’t be relied upon but are merely supplementary to emissions cuts and renewable energy. A lot of people write off geoengineering completely, but some of the less permanent geoengineering solutions like increasing reflectivity through solar reflectors could provide some short term solutions and buy a little time.
@mrinalmunbodh7206

Interesting. What do you think about carbon fixing? Could there be an energetically clean way to extract carbon from the atmosphere at a scale which would be big enough to be impactful?
@illariavisentin236
@illariavisentin236 3 роки тому
@@mrinalmunbodh7206 Carbon fixing, like any method of geoengineering imho, is a method that could be used in conjunction with reduced carbon emissions. It’s one of the “better” geoengineering methods as it’s using afforestation (greening areas that haven’t been green for years/decades) and reducing deforestation which can help to remove some extra CO2 from the atmosphere. What’s important to note is that we can’t just have one method to use, but rather use several methods together. Carbon Fixation is probably one of the cleaner carbon removal methods I’ve learnt about, but sadly none that I’ve come across from what I remember (I’ll come back if I remember one) have been shown to be cost effective on a large scale as yet. Again, I’m merely a student of climate so please don’t take my words as absolute. I’d highly recommend having a look at the Assessment Report 5: Summary for Policy Makers from the UN which covers this type of information (and much more) and is considered the most authoritative source on Climate Change. Hope this helps xx
@mrinalmunbodh7206
@mrinalmunbodh7206 3 роки тому
@@illariavisentin236 , I see. I was also thinking of possibly using artificial means to convert the CO2 from the atmosphere, something like an artificial leaf which could be produced more easily (hopefully cleanly). I will look into the matter more.
@illariavisentin236

I'm in my late twenties and it really amazes me how 'kids these days' are so passionate about the environment. When I was a teenager I became a vegetarian and people did not understand it at all, now it's common discourse that animal agriculture is a huge factor in climate change. I went to a FFF protest and was so moved by all the teenagers there, this would have been unthinkable just 10-12 years ago. Everyone can help create less demand for things that are harmful to the environment. Thank you for this video!

I find truly sad and frightening that there are people in the comments saying that we don't actually know if it's true, or that carbon dioxide is produced by a lot of life forms, wake up people, every winter is colder, every summer is hotter, spring and fall are shortening, and if we don't stop this we will go back to the climate days of pangea, where there was the wet season and the dry season, people argue that changes like that are natural, that the earth has survived through them, yeah, the earth did, but where are the giant insects of the carboniferous? The amazing synapsids and the great gorgons of the Permian? The humongous mammals of the Mesozoic? They experienced those changes and ultimately went extinct, if we don't do something, humans along the incredible biodiversity of planet earth will just be names on this list of amazing creatures that no longer exist. When fossil fuels run out, when society inevitably collapses, then humans will realize 2 things, climate change was a real threat, and it may be too late to recover when those events happen, please be educated, don't be morons, PLEASE

If you’re interested in learning more, even just a google search can help! There are so many resources about climate change policy and how to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions at both individual and societal scales. Just a small example of potential policy changes could be things like government incentives and mandates for companies that require them to reduce their emissions, working towards converting from fossil fuels towards renewables, and a personal favorite: implementing the restoration of natural ecosystems, particularly ones like wetlands, forests, etc. that can help sequester carbon. It’s all very fascinating, and if you look into it you’ll definitely find lots of ways to get involved!

It bothers me that this problem, like many others, is individualised by the discourse. Of course an individual acting ethically in regards to the environment is a good thing, but the issue of climate change especially must be addressed on a systemic level. The narrative seems to be that you, your mum, and the nice grandpa who feeds stray dogs down the street are, as part of society, to blame for climate change, and thus also have the responsibility to fix it, but the things that cause most of the emissions are actually caused by massive industries controlled by unfathomably wealthy sociopaths who own lawmakers and administrators. Many of these problems cannot simply be changed by a widespread change in consumer behaviour, and many are happening in spite of it, such as continued subsidies for fossil fuels often being the only reason they are competitive in the energy market in many places. The political will to fight climate change is there, as is the sense of urgency associated with, the problem is that the aristocracy does not agree.

It truly makes life difficult and not a lot of people are aware that this is even a thing and how much it can effect a woman. The way I've been able to visibly see climate change is the fact that there's no snow. I live in the north of Sweden and it's crazy how little snow we get now compared to when I was little. Farther north there's still a lot but in my hometown, we used to have the first snow at the beginning of November and it would melt fully in April. now we have snow maybe jan-march. if even that - last year there was pretty much no snow at all, it was just cold.

That’s awesome! If you want to increase your impact, you can plan to vote with other family and/or friends. Make a plan of how you are going to vote (mail, in-person), what you’ll need, where you’ll need to go, and how you are going to get there. You may have others around you that also haven’t fully yet decided to vote or plan how to make sure it happens. Thanks for having your say in the way the future unfolds - even if the nominated candidates may not be your preferred candidate.

I had one of those voter campaign callers convince me today. I mentioned that I originally registered because I wanted to vote for Bernie. I told them I wasn't planning on voting at all because it just feels like a lost cause since the two main candidates suck but that's also a bad mindset. I'll be voting for Joe Biden to hopefully spark a change for these very important topics.

As a student in restoration ecology and climate change myself, I would have like them to reiterate the point that this is a human issue, not a "nature issue". Extreme events have occurred in the past accompanied by mass extinctions before and although they have been accompanied by massive loss of biodiversity, nature adapts and life will continue on. By warming the climate this quickly we are putting our food supply chain and our own habitat at risk, but even if we go extinct the Earth will keep spinning for several more billion years with or without us. People treat climate change as an environmental issue with nature loving extremists at its core, but it is really all about saving people, not the planet.

@calmao666

i don't think that is even something to consider, didn't history teach us through trial and error with the multiple nuclear plants accidents and the overall amount of nuclear waste these produce?
@thenannagroup3512
@thenannagroup3512 3 роки тому
@@calmao666 First, history has only shown that humans make deep errors sometimes. France is a pioneer in nuclear energy to this very day making 76% of it's energy from nuclear fission! The US has 50+ nuclear reactors actively making 9% of our consumed energy a year. They already exsist. They are already safe. There have only been 3 nuclear accidents in the history of human civilization all caused by human negligence. People die from wind and hydro production by far more then nuclear. Nuclear is safer to produce. Second I know nuclear energy is bogeyman but fear mongering has done immense damage to the reputation of the most clean and safe energy option. We have land fill room for damaged solar and wind farms without the immense room from trash but we can't build a secure location for nuclear waste? Which by the way, is much less toxic these days than it was. We have people who freak out over 5G towers so I can't assume the public would be smart enough to understand nuclear. You can find this all for yourself. The research is there
@calmao666
@calmao666 3 роки тому
@@thenannagroup3512 absolutly agree with the nonsense this 5g hysteria thingy, a may be bias for the instases of missplaced waste but i can see and appreciate the andvances that the nuclear field has brought. While i don't personally see it as a true final alternative it may be the best for a more slow transition to a cleanest energy.
