Well they learned that from AMD. With the 7800XT AMD set a precedence of making up a fake price to get good reviews, and by the time the real price is in the market, all the reviews are already done and people get hyped about the product and buy it anyway even if it's more expensive. Sadly reviewers are enabling and even encouraging that kind of behavior as the MSRP has a major impact on the conclusion.

15:56 To add to the reason you already mentioned, the PS5 console itself doesn't have to make all the profits by its hardware being sold (so it can sell cheap), and after that Sony will make more money by its users using subscriptions and playing games bought from the Playstation Store, because Sony who decided to sell PS5s cheap is the owner of Playstation Store. On the other hand, PC APU manufacturers don't get any money when you buy a game from Steam or pay for Game Pass to play on your AMD or Intel PC, so they have to make their profits by selling the part at a higher price from the get go.

For the rumoured strix halo apu, which is supposed to come with a giant rdna 3.5 igpu with 40 cus, it uses a 4 channel ddr5 memory controller, which means it cannot fit into am5 motherboards without ditching half of its memory bandwidth (and the die size might also be too big to physically fit into the socket). It might be possible that amd decides to squeeze it into a threadripper board because it does have the required memory channels, but that is assuming the trx50 socket supports an igpu connection for some reason (meaning amd had to plan the trx50 socket well in advance for this possibility). Even so, motherboard oems still need to release new models that come with display outputs on the rear i/o panel in order to make use of the igpu (unless some existing trx50 board already has a display output, which I am not aware of currently).
@GewelReal
@GewelReal 2 місяці тому
Isn't there a 16CU mobile APU planned? That could come to PC (altought we already see that 8700G is in 95% of the cases marginally faster than 8600G despite 50% more cores, as it's HEAVILY bandwidth starved)
@mingyi456
@mingyi456 2 місяці тому
@@GewelReal Yes, but that also uses a dual channel memory controller, so it will fit into am5 but I imagine performance will not be that much better because of that. Turns out to get high end dgpu performance out of an igpu, you probably end up needing a motherboard that costs as much as a high end dgpu anyway, and that is assuming amd even bothers making such an apu.

I was thinking exactly the same as what the answer was for the first question. There's a lot of buyers in a lot of different positions buying for lots of different use cases. The challenge for the reviewer is trying to make clear what cases a product is good for and what it isn't. Meanwhile, a buyer's challenge is to keep clear what their own case is and keep an eye on what information is relevant to them.
@peterwstacey

Graphics Cards and CPUs fall especially into this. CPUs can be used for all sorts of things (see Intel's crazy product stack for each generation), each of which have power, performance and cost requirements. Graphics Cards are not just used for gaming these days, and even if they are, what different gamers want from their cards varies a lot (some really like ray-tracing or DLSS, and others do not care). I really appreciate reviewers who do not say "you should buy this!" but instead say which type of customer it makes sense for, and if it is worth it for them
@AleksiJoensuu
@AleksiJoensuu 2 місяці тому
@@peterwstacey Yeah, there are just soooo many different variables, even if it's just "what's a good GPU for a gaming PC?" - Are you building a PC from scratch or are you upgrading? What doesn't make sense for an upgrader, might make sense for someone who doesn't have any GPU yet. - How much are you willing to spend? The price to FPS of a 700 dollar/euro GPU doesn't matter if you're only spending 300. - Which games do you plan on playing? Different GPUs perform differently in different titles. - Which resolution are you planning to play at? - Which settings are you planning to use? Are you excited to use ray tracing? - Will you use the same PC to play on a 4K living room TV and a 1440p computer screen? You might find benefit in DLSS/FSR/XESS - which one do you like best? - What's the other build like? Someone building a small PC for the living room might need a small form factor, good thermals and/or power consumption. - Speaking of which, do you have cheap or expensive electricity, or are you quite environmentally conscious? Where I'm from, electricity prices can vary from around 0,1€/kWh to over 1€/kWh depending on the market. - How long do you plan on keeping the card? Do you want many years of use, or do you like upgrading? Are you bothered about resale value? How are the warranties like? What's the manufacturer's history for driver support for older cards? - Will it be used for other tasks as well as gaming? Maybe you need more VRAM or AI computing power for something else you're doing, too. - What's your level of enthusiasm for problem solving and/or patience? An Intel buyer needs those, but otherwise the products might be viable. - Are you a streamer as well? Streaming capture quality might matter. So, there can be many, many different combinations that lead to a different "best gaming GPU".
@AleksiJoensuu
@AleksiJoensuu 2 місяці тому
And so I'm not saying that "All GPUs are equal" - just that it's not so simple for a reviewer to say "this is great and that other one is crap", nor is it for a buyer so simple to say "the reviews said this is great so I need to buy this".
@AleksiJoensuu
@AleksiJoensuu 2 місяці тому
A good example is the new AMD APUs. For any of my use cases, those are just stupid. Pay lots of money to get a product that's slower in both computing AND graphics products than having dedicated stuff for each. BUT I can understand some people are building extremely small computers with particular requirements for size, power consumption and simplicity.
@peterwstacey
@peterwstacey 2 місяці тому
Yes - the new APUs might make sense in markets like South America where graphics card tariffs are huge, for example. About finding the right use case, I would argue that "nearly all" graphics cards do have a reasonable use case, but can be niche (and might not make economic sense in your area). GT-710 is great for adding multiple monitor support for financial trading desks that require up to 6 monitors @ 1080p. GT-730 is ok for SFF WinXP retro PCs. Passively cooled GT-1030 are great for turning an old Haswell era Intel or Ryzen 3000 series into a HTPC. For example.

@AndersHass
@AndersHass 2 місяці тому
With LPDDR it does seem easier to get higher bandwidth than with regular DDR, so from that perspective I can understand it being easier to make a higher end integrated GPU. With handhelds being as popular as they are it does also seem like a good position to offer a more integrated GPU focused APU since you can get higher volume orders than with a socketable desktop system. It is still a shame they don’t make it anyway since it could be a killer low spec option.

In Romania at least, the 4080's are having really bad sales. Generally, if you have 1000Euros to blow on a GPU to play games in 4K, you're most likely a 1 percenter, so you'll just get a 4090 for 1800Euros. And it shows in the sales. The 4090 sales are continously higher than 4080+4080S combined. The middle-class is still gaming in FHD. Upper-middle-class can barely afford a 70class card and to play in 2K. And Yes. The regular cards didn't see any price-reductions. The Super series just slotted in slightly above the old prices. There weren't any "cheap" 4080's to buy, because people weren't buying them to begin with ... Nobody's going to sell a 4080Super for less than a 4080. @duLouser
@duLouser 2 місяці тому
Yes, but the difference is miniscule. What's more relevant is that it's possible to make specific optimizations for the console hardware while PC hardware is due to the variety of different architectures and plethora of possible combinations not really suitable to such tailor made improvements.
@PaulSpades
@PaulSpades 2 місяці тому
Playstation, at least, seems to have better dev tools, apis, libraries and debugging since using AMD hardware. Historically, consoles have added hardware to accelerate stuff - be it cd/dvd read speed, audio/dsp/analogue acceleration, memory buffers in weird places, co-processors, hardware antialising, various types of data compression, unique shader functionality. Some games put the weird stuff to use, and these features have not been available on the PC platform, or they come years later(integrated in the cpu/motherboard/graphics cards). Currently, I guess, modern consoles have unique features implemented in microcode and the software libraries since they use x86 APUs. But, again, not all x86 systems are equivalent, you can still design hardware optimised for the types of games you want to run on your platform. There are lots of moving parts to tweak and squeeze improvements out of - a slightly bigger cache here, a few lanes for better bandwidth there, a faster flash memory controller here, cheaper components there. And really, the only computing components that run balls to the wall all day, every day, is busy data center stuff. PCs get the scraps of technology from that, and consoles make the most out of the scraps of technology from PCs/workstations (that's how it's always been since atari, nintendo and sega consoles).

"unless" they could bypass the need for V-RAM on the motherboard and pair it directly with the APU die itself. The cluster of chiplets on that package would be incredible, CPU, GPU, V-RAM, Memory Controller, but I can't see any reason it wouldn't work other than being a nightmare of circuit design.

Yeah, it's only been a decade(or three, if you count the arm/mips based devices with regular dram) since game consoles moved to this exact architecture. But we keep buying ATX hardware. Because... "pro gaming" marketing? PCI-Express moved along fast enough? We get faster hardware from the duopolies each year? We like to run computing hardware at wildly inefficient clocks and power that the system needs 5/7/9 fans to keep it ticking? Because RGB? Maybe because it's also what we did 20 years ago? MSI seemingly killed off the UNIFY-X line which filled this segment though they are releasing an MPower board, but it looks like a low end power delivery design. ASUS has the Apex and Gigabyte the Tachyon X but those are rather expensive and EVGA isn't making motherboards anymore though theirs were also premium priced.

18:40 Yep. Even then, my NZXT Z490 board has horrible noise on each and every USB and onboard audio ALC 1220 jack, so it must be an external DAC with independent power supply, on top. BTW: The culprit is in my case is the "spiky" RTX 3070 FE power handling, badly insulated from the USB ground in the motherboard and/or PSU. I did not have said issue with a prior MSI GTX 1070.

I don't think the 4080 Super at $1000 U.S. was "theoretical only", I think they just sold out really fast. Many people kind of fell for the Nvidia tactic of "we'll discount what was a $1200 to $1000 and people will think it's a bargain and buy it" tactic. Yeah I agree it should be more like $800, but I'm not in the market for anything in the 40-series anyway. MAYBE the 50-series will bring something I'm interested in because I'll likely build a new computer in 2025, but $800 will be my price point (unless someone sends me a check like I got during the pandemic), so likely they'll have to produce something in the "5070" range that has enough performance to make me want to buy it - and, frankly, I don't see it happening. Looks to me like I'll be skipping that generation too, unless prices are significantly lowered for the "5080" in comparison to the 4080 and the performance increase is really good.
@ElladanKenet
@ElladanKenet 2 місяці тому
I mean, assuming the MSRP actually works, the 4080 can still be discounted. If the 4080 Super is at $1000 now, and no model sells higher than that, then you could market the original 4080 down to $900-950. That would also shift the rest of the product line down somewhat, which we did see with the 4070 being discounted. Of course, that won't happen.

click baiting in itself in my opinion is overrated as a bad thing because you can never not click bait on UKposts. making a UKposts channel and being successful enough to stick with it you must make a thumbnail and video name that suggests importance to the audience you intend to make content for. so trying to shame someone for click baiting on UKposts in itself is a joke because click baiting is the thing to do for all UKposts creators. what people should complain about is wither or not the click baiting is good and and relevant to the content it contains. with all that said thank you for making good truthful thumbnails and video descriptions and then most importantly thanks for professional grade content after making the thumbnail that suggests the video is worth my time to watch that all creators must do anyhow.
@HenryThe12
@HenryThe12 Місяць тому
You equate click baiting with using an attractive and enticing title and thumbnail, the two are not equal. Click baiting is explicitly a form of false advertising - knowingly titling a video and creating a thumbnail implying one thing, yet creating a video about another thing. You can absolutely make good content that garners traction and not click bait.

Is AMD building APUs backward? If the 8500G had the M780 graphics built-in, it would be an incredible value. Folks who might spend $329 on the 8700G are more likely to add a GPU later and mostly want the onboard graphics for troubleshooting, so maybe they should build the 8700G with the M740 graphics cores and add the extra cache back in if possible. If the lower end APUs had the stronger graphics cores and the higher end APUs had more cache combined with still useful graphics, would this make for a more appealing APU line-up? Right now these chips only make sense once they get heavily discounted.

I get tired of some channels that have to give all products a "use case good buy" option instead of saying that buying one product over another is a bad idea. If a certain card is a poor choice vs competition, then just say it. It seems that every card gets a $25 range to say it's a good buy if you are spending exactly in that range. There's only one option in that $25 range, so it's meaningless. For instance, $850 for a 4070ti Super vs the competition slightly above it and slightly below (e.g. vs a $900 7900 XTX or a $700 7900 XT). The ray tracing argument can only go so far, especially since the 4070ti Super isn't a viable 4K card.

Regarding better mobo features, a PLX chip would have been a higher end option, but like VMWare, Broadcomm bought PLX and are screwing everybody by probably pricing them out of desktop viability or maybe even refusing to licence it

You have to apply a "less performance" discount to the old 4080's as well, can't just apply the "super has arrived" discount. It was a crap price to begin with, now it is taking up storage space. Admit it and take the loss!

What's weird about the 8700G- you can already find Prebuilds like Cyberpower selling systems with the 8700G and a 40X0 GPU. WHY? Did AMD sell them cheap in bulk to get them in prebuilds for some reason? Market image? idk.

I don't think we seen an actual bad product lately just bad prices. The last truly bad product came from AMD in the form called the 6500xt

@forog1
@forog1 2 місяці тому
@@haukionkannel That would be fine if it was renamed 3040 and a lower price. The 6500xt is a laptop GPU that don't have a Video encoder like literally all GPUs come with

Would cutting the price of the 4080 affect the "third party" vendors? I guess they "just receive" an agreed stock amount from the chips and they pay Nvidia after selling them. So these vendors wouldn't have to suffer a financial loss when Nvidia decrease the price of the product later. If this is all true, it is just greed. They made a "thousand" 4080Super trying to get people buying the more expensive original model that are technically rotting on shelves in a much much larger amount.

a realistic perfect APU would deliver at least last gen 50 tier performance combined with entry level core count like 4 or maybe even 6. They could let them overclock to get that extra performance a laptop couldnt provide, maybe include an AI accelerator to enhance upscaling and it has to cost AT MAX 220 bucks, ideally 180max. Anything higher than that has no potential costumers and is outdone by CPU + dGPU.

If i didn't score a 4080 Super on launch day at MSRP, I wasn't going to buy one. Luckily, I scored one at Best Buy with 1 year no interest. I ended up paying it off by selling my 4070 for $400 and a a 3050 laptop for $500. I had to sneak buy and sneak install, all without wifey finding out, as she would've never understood the market the way I do. If I would have waited... I knew I'd be priced out due to the scalper market.

@viking9442 The sad thing is that I didn't really spend much out of pocket. I couldn't believe she didn't notice a graphics card three times the size of the previous one, but I can believe it as well. The only white lie I told was that I was taking the computer to Microcenter to learn the safe way to remove dust from the case.
