PhD in polymer engineering here; you're absolutely correct about the shape memory effect around 18:50. When the epoxy was heated above its glass transition temperature during the sun-assisted shaping stage, the residual stresses in the area around the clamp were "locked in" after it cooled back down. When you sanded it that area was likely heated back above the glass transition temperature and was able to relax again, leaving telltale markings from the clamp due to the shape memory effect!

@@BlacktailStudio Hijacking this comment thread to tag you. With my extremely limited education in my department of mechanical and materials engineering, I do know of the fact that epoxy can be altered to behave in the way you describe in the video. With a high strain inducing plastic deformation (the clamp) being released near the glass transition temperature (usually that a lot higher than 40C but in some cases it can be low) the "permanent" shape is set at the high temp, then when allowed to cool it will take on a "temporary: shape. However, this "permanent" shape is typically only recovered when heated back up to temperatures closer to what the experienced during its formation. I don't believe that event had ever occurred, the only thing I can think of is the sanding, polishing, buffing processes producing large amounts surface heat, thereby replicating those conditions. It's unlikely though. It's more likely that the strain was so excessive that the clamp stamped a shape really deep in there but it would be hard to see without the polished finish. Hard to say. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shape-memory_polymer edit. Did you shine a UV light on it for a long period of time? UV can induce this kind of shape rebound as well.

I really hate it when someone comments you aren’t a real woodworker. I have gotten the commitment a few times that I am not a real artist because I don’t show my art in a gallery. I don’t listen to them and you shouldn’t either. You are great at what you do the labels don’t matter. Keep creating and being curious. I honestly love both but I am mainly a wood gal so I like the old but my hubby would love the new. So if we were in the market for a new side table we would probably compromise on the new since you put wood with it. 😂 gotta compromise when your married 😂

It's usually hard for me to sit all the way through these long wood working videos, even when the end product is very unique or beautiful. Not sure why, but a lot of channels just don't do it for me. This was one of the few times I was actually very interested and sat through the whole thing. I think your commentary really adds a lot to the video! What a lovely table.

I actually love both tables! The epoxy and the Zebra wood give off a futuristic vib while the older table has an ancient," passed down for generations" feel about it. I would be proud to display either table in my home. Amazing work and results.Bravo!

I'm amazed at your talent. A gift from G.j of that you've worked at through discipline and I'm going to stretch here a bit but tedious hours and tenacity brought you here. Name her something elegant as her. She deserves it. What's your wife's name again? Her high bar is what you work to impress. A perfect match by viewing your whole process. I know you'll never read this but it's my honest thought. I'm subscribing today. After being on UKposts for many years I've not hit that sub button. The like button yes the dislike many more. You're an artist, only because of mastering woodworking techniques have you honed your craft. You aren't required to know everything in woodworking to be a master craftsman. Doing one specific thing better than everyone else earns that title as long as you do the basic things relatively well. You sir are top notch mastering several. Kudos!

NEW - I have to say that I have never in my life seen anyone that is as meticulous about absolutely every step of the process as you are. I am from Winnipeg, Canada. I am a 60 year old somewhat handicapped man that has been playing around with wood/epoxy projects for about a year and a half. Due to our climate, my disability and my very limited work space, I can only dream of gaining some of the skill that you demonstrate in every build of yours that I have watched. This project blew my mind as I'm sure many others as well. I'm going to enroll in your tutorials in the coming weeks, in hope of aquiring enough pointers to make a project that I can be proud of. Thank you for being such an inspiration. Sincerely; Dan.

Great build! An idea that might be cool is if there was an extra bit of wood length on the table leg, then you could flip it around and attach it to the other side of the table depending on if you want a short and wide table or a tall and narrow one.
