One year while at my family reunion- we own land on the Mulberry River- we had a truck load of strangers come on to our land and stopped at the campsite and started to unload their gear to go hunting- myself and two other senior boys confronted them telling them thus was private land and they should leave- they laughed and said who was going to make them leave- two of the grandma's appeared holding shotguns and said "we will" - the strangers loaded back up and left quickly- lmao my grandma was holding a Long barreled Greener 10gage shotgun lol

My wife and I had a run in with some people while out exploring the ghost town of Ellsworth in Nevada. Some locals from Gabbs came across us and long story short, they were very drunk, had us blocked in, threatened us and drove away shooting. It was unnerving to say the least. We brought firearms but we thought our biggest adversary would be animals like coyote or cougar. It turns out in all of our adventures we've had more problems with people than animals. Even came across an ugly domestic dispute out hiking one time. Animals are easy. People, not so much.

I went camping in Northern Arizona last year. Was at deserted primitive campsite maybe 200 feet back from the main road. Someone pulled in with a truck at 2 AM, stopped right by my tent. I had my AR15 in the tent with me and chambered a round, and waited. It was all I could do. Fortunately no one got out (they probably looked around and realized I didn't have anything visible worth stealing; just my MSR PocketRocket on a 6 foot folding table) and they eventually drove off. But that was very unnerving. No one does that unless they're up to no good. My policy now is that my tent will always be set up with the door facing AWAY from the road so I have some concealment if I need to exit.

@@WardenWolf we also set up our camp differently now. Even if it's just parking the truck nose out for a quicker escape. We also came up with a story that we can tell sketchy people that come upon us about being a "part of a group" and that we're on "a one night away" and that "they are expecting us in the morning." The thought being that if people think that we are part of a larger group and they expect us, then the percieved opportunity for crime should be lessened.

I wasn't out camping, in fact I was still in town about a mile from home. I had just installed new headlight assemblies on my Tacoma and was in a construction area where it was dark and set my headlights to the correct height. On my way back to the apartment I noticed a car tailing me closely. If I changed lanes they changed lanes. If I turned they turned. If I sped up or slowed down they did too. Finally I got tired of it and made a fast maneuver in my parking lot that allowed me to block their car. They stopped and I got out and yelled at them with my truck between us. All I saw was headlights. I couldn't see the car. Finally one got out of the car and answered me saying they were police. I told the guy to walk forward toward me and hold up his ID then. He asked if I was armed. I told him not to worry about it. He could see me and I couldn't see any of them. He told me to come out from behind the truck and I said not likely. You could be ready to shoot me. He finally approached my truck so I could see him clearly. He identified himself and asked if I was armed. I said only my tire iron. We finally got out of traffic and he started asking me what I was doing behind the stores. I said I wasn't behind the stores, I was in the construction area. Longer story shorter it turned out a store had been robbed while I was back there and they thought I might be the getaway car. Right? I was a quarter mile from the stores, not right behind them with a large cleared field between!. I nearly had to change my pants cause I knew I bit off more than I could chew stopping them like that.

The Truck/Tarp combo is Great. In my evolution of camping, I started tent camping, went to topper truck camping, Pop-up camper, travel trailer, and back to truck camping. I like truck camping the very best of all the choices. At 70 my roaming up and down the mountains are behind me, while truck camping still gets us outdoors and we can pretty much bring everything with us including the kitchen sink. It makes camping very pleasurable for us older folks. Wishing the very best for you and your loved ones.

My husband and I camped in national forest land in Washington state one night. It was beautiful forest with wild raspberries and flowers. It was a boreal forest. That night it began to snow. Right at the edge of dark a dude on a bicycle came riding by and stopped. He said he was supposed to meet his sister out there and wondered if we knew where that road ended. He just generally acted confused. The strange thing was, it was freezing weather and he had no coat, no sweater, nothing. He left but we slept with weapons close that night.

Back in the late 80s I combined my love for camping and backpacking with my love for history and became a Civil War reenactor. We drank out of tin cups and in the evenings after all the camp visitors had left events, the beer came out. But we still insisted on period style everything so the beer cans filled up the tin cups and then were placed out of sight from each other. Tin makes all beer taste the same so tens of thousands of reenactors across the east and mid west bought the cheapest beer possible, Schafers. Probably dream years for that beer company!

My family had a bizarre experience in the early 70s when me and my brother were both small children. It wasn't a camping trip, but we were driving in a very rural area of Kentucky called Booger Mountain. It used to be the only route available to visit our relatives before the Daniel Boon Parkway was built. One night we were going over the mountain and these nuts started following us really closely with highbeams. Then they would disappear for a long time and reappear. Well, at one point my parents thought they were gone and my brother needed a bathroom break. Being a rural area, my parents allowed him to relieve himself at the side of the road. Suddenly, the highbeams reappeared right there behind us on the side of the road! My mom grabbed my poor brother by his collar and drug him back into the car while he was still going and my dad stomped on the gas! Talk about a scary ride! I just remember by brother being so confused because our mom suddenly snatched him up and he didn't know what was happening. We were out of there! My brother had to finish going in the car! It couldn't be helped.

Back in the mid-1980s... my sister and I were headed to Boise, in her car. At one point around the Stanley area, we pulled over to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh mountain air. I was about 23 at the time and my sister was 22 - I'm ok looking, but only 5.2, with light brown hair, decent body...but my sister took after my mom's 'Nordic' side of the family. She's about 5.8, and a gorgeous natural blond, long legs, large breasts almost movie star perfect....we use to tease her and call her "Hollywood" due to her looks. As we were at that rest stop, and just walking around sipping on some sodas and looking at the Sawtooths, this pick-up truck drove by with 2 men in it. They slowed Way Down to take a look at us, and probably realized pretty quickly that we were just two young women and no one else. They slowly drove on after honking the horn on their truck. We left about 10 minutes later...only to find that some 15 miles up this pretty much isolated mountain highway, that they had pulled over, waited until we drove by, then got behind us. They followed us, riding close on our back bumper. If my sister slowed, they would not pass, and if my sister sped up, they maintained that short gap between us. They did this for about 100 miles, with very very little traffic for most of that distance. We finally got into some traffic coming into Eagle Idaho, and they were behind us by alike a 1/2 mile. We pulled into a gas station and my sister ran in and asked the clerk there to call the cops. Long before then, my sister was in tears, stressed because she was driving, and in fear of what those men might do...like maybe actually bump us off the road. I was afraid too...and told my sister to pull over and let me drive, but she was too afraid to stop. I had done a lot more driving than her, and had been on that road many many times and it was only like her 3rd time traveling it. I had decided to stay in the car to see if I could spot the truck once it caught up to us again. And what was funny was a few minutes after my sister ran into that station, here came that truck, and it came right into the parking area and parked about 8 spots down from our car. We just sat and looked at each other, with the two men talking to each other and making gestures like pointing at the station and at me and the car...as they talked. Then suddenly this squad car pulled in between us, this cop jumped out and ran over to the truck with his gun out !!! About 5 minutes later another squad car showed up...and by then I got out and went into the station. It turned out that when the clerk called in to the police there was a squad car literally less than 1/2 a block away and he got there almost immediately. Turns out the truck and license plate number that my sister gave to the dispatcher...was for 2 men with prison records, one who was just released not to long ago and didn't report in to his parole officer. Both men had been in and out of prison for various things, involving beating victims in home robbers and also rape.

@@mariettawinfrey4920 I can remember my sister telling me how shocked she was in seeing a cop pull in, in what felt like just 15 seconds after my sister gave dispatch the license plate number and a description of the truck and the men and said they harassed us for about 100 miles. . But yeah, that officer was already headed towards the station and literally was able to pull in just a few seconds after getting information from dispatch. Another officer took our statement told us how lucky we were. Given the way so many cops showed up and that guns were drawn, it was easy to see they were not going to mess around as they knew those men were dangerous. We just felt such a sense of relief though, knowing those men were not going to be able to follow us to our relative's house nor to the hotel we were going to be staying at.

20'x13' is a big tarp. While in college I kayaked at least two weekends every month. More in the good weather months. I car camped in a Volvo Cross Country with fold-flat seats. I carried a 40'x30' tarp. I rock climb too so I would take a 100' Bluewater rope, stretch it between two big trees, and pitch the tarp on the bias ( diagonally ). It covered my car, a picnic table, and at least 3 tents ( sometimes more depending who came with me ). When it poured, my tent became a hangout spot for many campers close around. Good times. My friends called my tarp "Gigantor".

Talking about your friend's weird experience - yes, i've had that kind of experience. People do things that are crazy but you need to realise, it totally makes sense to them, and they have a 'normal' reason for doing it ... we just don't know what it is. It doesn't mean it isn't crazy/stupid, but they are totally in control, and when they're doing that they're no more fired up than you or me when we're rushing home to catch a pay-for-view or something like that. They just live in their own world. Others are just letting off steam, or needing to act tough to prove something to themselves - they get scared, run off, then a few minutes later they've told themselves how tough they are again, and they look for another chance to show out.

Experience: I’ve been solo camping in my RTT in North GA national forest. I had a similar deal where a car passed my site, backed up, drove down the short path and parked 50’ from my truck with high beams on me. I climbed out they turned broadside and said something. Don’t know what it was but they then left. I was between dogs at the time, and I sure did miss having a four legged buddy with me. They sense way more than we do. I did have a concealed Glock 34 on me in case things went sideways.

yah Luke, was travelling through British Columbia with my then bf in the late 90's. It was close to midnight and several miles before we hit our camp destination. While on this desolate stretch of road we passed a black truck going the opposite direction. It passed and suddenly it stopped turned around and caught up with us and tailed us for several miles. I kept looking back while it's headlight shined into our vehicle, I was angry and asked my bf what do they want! He was quite and nervous, I kept looking back and got a bad feeling, I told my bf, whatever you do "do not stop this car" no matter what! So we just kept going and finally the truck gave up turned around and went back from where it came. All I can say is... trust your instinct, don't stop, leave, basically get out of the situation. It was very creepy to say the least.

This video made me feel right at home. When i was a child my family used to camp out in the dutch coastal dune forest, and, it being the netherlands, we had rain storms just like this quite often, even in high summer Basically it was one pair of shorts and a summer dress and several long clothes and at least one sweater that got packed, as well as books several games and grid paper to play battleship on... as we were sure to be inside the tent for at least a few days ina 4 week holiday. We used to pre emptively dig a ditch around the tent to take runoff that could be like small streams in the heaviest rain. Days with 28c and mostly sunny were 'lets go to the beach!' days as they were not super common. So yes, i get 'holiday feeling' every time its around 18-25c and moderately cloudy or overcast and intermittent rain or rainstorm. Weather patterns sure have changed. I remember around 86/89 the first real big heat waves of 35+celsius and talk of drought on the news. My elementary school went 'hot weather schedule' where we started early and ended at noon every time the temp got above 28c, and that happened one week a year max. You could basically have that schedule 2 months a year now.

I got two stories: First, I was stealth camping in a hammock and a tarp. It was a beautiful summer day in NE Ohio and the inevitable happens. The tornado alarm goes off. Great. I should have packed up then. Then it get's dark and the wind picks up. I'm sitting in the hammock and it starts swaying like a rocking chair. Not too bad, but I should have packed up. Then all hell breaks loose! There was rain of course. Buckets of it. Good thing I was under a canopy of Maple and I know about drip lines. Then of course came the hail. Marble sized. I'm surprised my tarp held up. The only thing that I was worried about was the lightning. Mind you, I'm suspended between two trees. Either one get's hit and I'm toast. The second story is when two dudes came walking up on my campsite. Different location than above. I knew they were out there because I heard the atv's. Okay, it's October and it's full fall foliage. I'm using a huge bright blue tarp. They noticed it and decide to investigate. No, I'm not homeless, just camping. Old dude was cool with that. Younger dude had his fists up like he was ready to fight. I'm like... here have a beer. Old dude was cool with that, young dude was still in a boxing stance. So I casually displayed the array of knives I had on me. Old dude was "let's go" So they left with two beers. I should have packed up but stayed anyways, Nothing deters me from a good camping.

Love the rain adventures and that setup is awesome! edit: My only slightly scary experience so far is car camping in a tiny little pull off spot on public lands and at 3am a truck slowly drives by and stops for 10 seconds on the road and then went on. That made me stay awake for quite a while listening for anything and everything.
