I just had a small red fox pop out in my back yard the other day and curl up and take a nap. I sat there and watched him for almost an hour. Such a blessing to be able to see such an elusive and beautiful animal.

My dad was forward scout on a patrol in Malaya, 1957. He said he paused, looked around, then was about to step forward and looked in front of him. There, just ten feet in front of him, crossing the narrow jungle trail was a Sumatran Tiger. He said it was huge, beautiful and stared at him while he stared at it. They exchanged stares for he says 'a lifetime', then the tiger turned and disappeared into the jungle silently in a couple of steps. The 9 men spread out in single file behind him had no idea what happened until he told them later on during a break. He said it was probably the most incredible experience he ever had. He was totally at the mercy of the giant cat who could have sprung on him before he could have fired his bolt action No5 .303 Jungle Carbine but at the time he felt no danger or fear, just awe.

I had an animal experience like Luke’s just a couple of days ago. I go hiking in an area called Lake Natoma near Folsom California. Even though it is a major urban area in Northern California it is possible to hike there and not see very many people. I was hiking there at dusk and I just happened to turn my head and saw a big grey lump on a tree about twenty yards away. I noticed it moved occasionally and had tufts on its head. It was a Great Horned Owl! I got out my compact Olympus binoculars out and looked at it and it was looking at me. This went on for about 10 minutes and then I saw another Great Horned Owl flying nearby, probably the first ones mate, then the first one flew away silently. I know these owls are around but I rarely see them so it was great to share this experience with them. Then that same night I heard a Western Screech Owl in a wooded area behind my condo. Despite their name they have a soft repetitive call and are small about the size of a crow. I didn’t see it I just heard it. Barn owls are the ones that actually screech and sound like something from a horror movie. I have always been fascinated with owls but I rarely see them.

Why can't I stop watching these? lol Seriously, I'm wheelchair confined and your videos are like a whole basket of chips and gummies and popcorn for me ! In between gaming, missing person cases and serial killer stuff this is my go-to! Thanks for sharing and filming, it's a lot of work, we know, and so appreciated! Also, in Ojibwe and in Anishinabe culture, the fox can represent the wise woman or be a warning of trouble 😊 hope none was to follow! But it's funny, the things we remember forever... once driving through the Smokys just after dusk, there were big patches of fog low to the ground, and at the same time, loads of fireflies ~ I have yet, in the 40 years that followed, to see anything quite so mystical and spectacular. The light from the fireflies glistened and shone in yellow-blue halos around each firefly, reflecting off the water droplets - I wish everyone could see lol it was amazing!

Besides learning things from your videos, it's just really nice to see someone doing something they enjoy so much. Believe it or not, there are actually people who would see a fox and forget it ten seconds later. Years ago my husband and I saw a fox (in the grass next to the grocery store!) and we never forgot it.

Sometimes strange or abrupt wildlife appearances are an OMEN. Mother Nature is chum full of mysteries and sometimes for sensitive & respectful people, the meaning will jump out as an Omen. Go back in your memory time a few days or wks prior to the sighting and look for any connection.

You often mention peaceful and quiet. Growing up in the mountains of Oregon, I had my spirit calmed when I would go out walking in the mountains and hear nothing for hours and hours except birds chirping off in the far distance. One time I was walking along, again for hours and hours in silence, and a deer was sleeping along side the logging road. I startled it and it sprang up in the dead silence and scared the living hell out of me. It was a loud shock in the middle of all the silence.

Years ago I wan sitting against a tree in the autumn woods of Maryland. I heard a rustling in the leaves and it was getting louder, closer, and coming fast. Just as I was thinking of standing, a little red fox came into view and when he saw me he put on the brakes and came sliding toward me on the leaves. He ended up stopping about 10-15 away and we just stared at each other for what seemed like a long time but probably wasn't more than 10 seconds. I said "Hey buddy" and I swear that little fox jumped two feet in the air, did a 180 while airborne, and took off the way he came. I guess I'll never forget that experience. Love your videos Luke. Keep up the good work. My biggest problem is that every time I see a bit of kit your using I want to buy it!

Once in the UK I was wild camping in my tent when around 2am in the morning a bright light lit up the tent. At first I thought it was someone with a high powered torch coming to tell me to move on, but when I opened the tent front there was a bright sphere about 60 feet above me and a vibration in the air, but no sound. It hovered above me for a few minutes and then shot off straight up! When I awoke the next day I felt sick and thought I had imagined it, but it was definitely there!

I have encountered a 300 lb pig , Bob cats, baby owl while hiking at night, Red hawk at 20 feet as I popped my head up out of a bushy trail, and one memorable visit from a kangaroo mouse on a hill top wilderness camp overlooking the pacific. I was impressed by the well groomed kangaroo mouse. My first encounter ever was two bears that walked up to my sleeping bag while camping under a tarp in a rain storm in Yosemite Valley on a school camping trip, my first.

New subscriber here, and I have to say, this channel has quickly become my favorite one! The story about the fox, and that moment you shared, that's special. THAT is what it's all about! My moment would have to be last summer, when I was backpacking solo for a couple of days on the AT outside of the Grayson Highlands area in VA. As I was making my way towards Briar Ridge to make camp, I heard a commotion. As I looked up the mountainside, I saw three wild ponies coming down towards the trail. One in particular stopped and locked eyes with me for a couple of minutes, sizing me up. Same kind of deal as you with the fox. A moment of connection. That pony hiked with me on the trail for about a mile, until I reached the ridge. Then he went off with his friends. I made camp and was collecting firewood when the 3 ponies appeared again. This time they stayed on that ridge with me all afternoon and evening, and through the night. Being all alone out there on that ridge, watching the sun set over the Blue Ridge Mountains, storm clouds just starting to form, drinking my hot cocoa, with the wild ponies to entertain me and keep me company...THAT is a memory I will always cherish! Now, they DID start in with some antics, lol, and I ended up picking up my tent and hauling it to the other side of the ridge at one point, but they sure made that day of the trip so memorable and special. Truly a once in a lifetime thing for this Indiana girl!
@mollyisenbarger1
@mollyisenbarger1 2 роки тому
I feel like I need to add this part too. It has nothing to do with animals, but the moment was too great not to mention it. As I was up on that ridge in SW VA, watching the horses, I heard thunder in the sky. Only it was clear at that time of day. I looked up to see not one, but 4 fighter jets buzz over that ridgetop, all of them doing some kind of cool move as they passed overhead. It felt like an airshow just for me. Totally unexpected and the last thing I thought I'd ever see in the backcountry! Just incredible!!!

One memory I have is while driving Hwy 101 on the Oregon coast. I was on business so was alone in the car. It was early in the morning, between 6 and 7 with good light, but misty.. I came on two rams with pretty big horns battling it out in the middle of the highway. There was no room to pass, since there were steep slopes on either side one leading down to the ocean. No one else around. I had to wait for them to finish the battle. I was a bit concerned a log truck was going to come on me stopped, but then I just relaxed and enjoyed the show. It lasted a good 10 minutes or so, then they just walked away. I’ll never forget it.

I mean this with no disrespect, but I don't think we should "forget" or shy away from things that are happening externally from us. To say we should forget what is happening in Ukraine right now ...and just happily go about our lives, is Missing the point. We should, if possible, pay attention to what is happening out there, help where and if we can! We are privileged to be in a spot where you can say, let's just live life...the people in Ukraine do not have that option at the moment. So, yes ..live laugh and love, but don't turn your back on Humanity and the Earth 👍❤️

I know how you feel when you and the fox had your moment watching each other, I had a similar experience here in Northern ontario, while walking through the bush with a boyfriend , One time we came across a large Bull moose standing up on a hill in the direction we had to go, we all just stood us looking to the side not directly at it , which would have been a bad thing, but we could still see him looking and moving his ears at us. eventually he left knowing we were not a threat . and while snowmobiling we saw a male and female wolf standing just curious and looking at us while we had stop for a break and tea. they didn't howl just looked , then ran off , those memories I shall never forget, aren't they awesome . thanks for sharing your experience . Loved this adventure nice tent, Great looking food and love that table .. how handy.

Depending on how you see it. I call it getting damn lucky. My daughter and I did a 2 week camping trip to glacier national park. On the east side for the first week was great. First day in camp got the warning of grizzly momma with two cubs frequenting the sight, great. Young and very protective momma and baby moose five feet from my tent. And a mountain lion that we saw cross the trail 50 yards ahead of us. First day still. Saw all kinds of other critters in that first week. Then the night before we leave we break down camp and my 15 year old daughters tent so we can get to the west camp early. Wake up in the morning to the sound of what I thought was momma and baby moose. WRONG. I waited till the rustling moved away and rolled out to check it out. About 20 yards away a bigger black bear was digging up an underground bees nest. Would have been right behind my daughters tent. I woke her up and told her to go to the truck (bear). She did very well. Didn’t freak. Could see the worry in her eyes though. I stayed between her and the bear till she was in the truck and safe. I love bears. And wolves. Can’t take my eyes off them when I see them. Soooo I sat there and watched this bear for about 5 minutes. Then decided to try and get him to leave. Let’s just say he didn’t appreciate my clapping and saying hey bear. He bluff charged me to within 20 feet now. Huffed a couple times and swayed back and forth with his head down. I pooped. Then he went back to the bees. Then another camper comes up next to me and says let’s get him out of here. A crowd was soon making its way over. So we yelled at the bear. It got up and ran right past us and right in front of my truck. Good trip. Looking to do it again. A bit long winded. Thought you’d like the story.

Returning to places that we knew and loved as kids can be so depressing due to inevitable change and progress(?????). I guess it's less likely in the US as there is so much space. I recently visited a woodland that I knew intimately many years ago. I was shocked to find that the woodland had been seriously reduced and cut back to a very small clump of trees which were encircled by detached houses...so sad but that is what happens on crowded little island UK...... Thanks for sharing your encounter with the fox Luke..I, too, had a similar experience not that long ago on Bodmin moor in Cornwall. A special memory indeed. Cheers, Blair.

Oh the fox memories! I was stationed in Germany in September 2207- November 2009. We were in the field in Graf in January 2008, I had a cold so the Army's smart leadership they had me stand out in the cold on trash detail. One night we had a red fox come over looking for a meal. I sat on the steps feeding it out of my hands. Our Brigade Commander walks out and see's this and freaks out getting my company commander to come out to see this. My CO see's this and looks at the Brigade commander and says " Ya, what's the problem sir? He's country and you can't break him of it." He never replied and walked off.

This is going to sound very twee, but re the fox encounter, many years ago I camped in Epping Forest (UK) and found myself surrounded by a large herd of deer, consisting of mostly fawns and does but also some stags. At sunset I meditated for a while on a fallen tree, and when I opened my eyes in the dusk light they were everywhere; I was surrounded. Even though I was completely still and silent they must’ve known I was there, but seemed not to care at all. After a while they moved off at speed in a sort of bunched convoy. It was pretty special, and the memory has stayed with me.

I chase amall fox off my porch some nights stealthily stealing the cat's food. It is too small for it to be coyote, has no fluffy tail with stripes like a raccoon, but all I get to see is its south end heading north! It doesn't move like a cat. Ever hear a fox mating call in the deepest winter? It is a bone chilling sound! Thanks for your vigorous hike up the bald. The woods remind me of Maryland country side where I grew up. Good memories!

You should look up this video, I think it's something like "petting a wild fox" or something. It's just a short quiet video of someone noticing a fox sleeping under a tree in the sun, and it's so asleep he walks right up and starts petting it, and it takes the fox a couple seconds to realize it's being touched and jumps up and runs away, but for just a few seconds he looked like he was enjoying it, it was the cutest thing. It must have just been too cozy in the sun and fell asleep without thinking where it was lol.

Enjoyed this adventure as all your other one's Always love enjoy watching and listening. Love foxes here in Australia I've come across many beautiful foxes. Few years ago I was going through this military place late at night. Then stopped there was an adult fox only 2 meters away from me. We both just stopped looking at each other for a good few mins. That was amazing. Thanks for sharing your experience it remind me of mine. Cheers.

Thank you for sharing this, been there in regard to the silence albeit the fox. I just wanted to express my gratitude for being one of a few of those who've inspired me to hike again. I've been doing stealth overnights where I live preparing for my PCT trek this May, 930 miles section hike to Canada, can't wait. I hear a lot of coyotes and owls, etc, up in the area of Hidden Valley, especially when you get closer to the beach. Peace and good tidings from the Conejo, enjoy the movie, keep up the great work!

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. My sons call you the “REAL LIFE NED FLANDERS” from the cartoon the Simpsons. If you’re not familiar watch it some day. You are very similar to Ned Flanders. Kind of nerdy but always happy and never mad about anything, that little “huh huh huh” laugh you do after every sentence or corny joke you make. “alright everyone, let’s do dah diddley day walk this wayyyyy”

For decades, we owned some quiet land with a wetland running through it. That land has hosted generations of red foxes. Sometimes we would see them running across our fields. Nikwax has been a 'go-to' cloth treatment for decades, too. It always has worked for us! GLAMPING never got simpler: the chair, the table; the ability to bring light and cooking heat inside during a storm!

I can still remember many years ago we were visiting a familly friend. We were walking in the woods, we could hear a deer following us out site. Every so often we could hear him snort. He followed us for sometime.

Spent a week in hospital recently for mrsa and can a bajillion % confirm that our healthcare system is jacked up. It’s picking straws when it comes to whether or not you’ll get competent doctors/nurses.

I had an interesting experience with a deer. He was enjoying a brisky morning munch and caught sight of me from a distance. He stared for a couple minutes and continued his breakfast. They're very graceful creatures.

Well mine was not a fox, but I have a cool story. When I was 13 yrs old my dad and I was on a hill over looking a meadow and was watching deer, well my dad taps me and said be quiet and move slow and look behind us. So I did and we seen a buck, a doe and a fawn walking behind us. It was so awesome and one of my favorite memories with my dad.

Thanks for sharing that memory. Bad weather camping is a ton of fun. There is something so magical about being tucked away in your tent. As to healthcare, I work in healthcare and the system is trash. Access to something I think is a basic human right is atrocious, unless you're one of rhe lucky ones with really good insurance. In the US, most of us are one catastrophic diagnosis from bankruptcy. Glad you're on the mend.

I had an unique experience crossing from Uyuni Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama Chile...3 day's across the Salts flats with 6 strangers in 4 x 4...One of the rarest to see in the area is an South American Grey Fox...And sure enough one showed up out of know where...Completely Surreal moment along with a magical journey I will never forget...Greetings from Seia, Portugal today...🇵🇹🤙

I turned 22 in Norway, 70 miles above the Arctic Circle. I was in the woods alone during a snow storm. The falling snow mutes all sounds but the snow landing on you. It was magical.
