Oh, the rear windows. Some people say G bodies don't have rear windows that don't roll down for cost reasons. Some say it allowed a larger pane of glass that could not have rolled down into the door because of the shorter wheel base. I've also heard that they saved space by not having a regulator mechanism in the door which allowed that unique "concave" door panel design that allowed them to advertise it having more interior space that the previous generation. I suppose all could be true. I've owned them, and never really cared, all had working AC and the flip out rear window actually flowed air nicely, too.

A combination of things: cost, "safety" (for a time windows in GM cars rolled down about half-way to 3/4 of the way to prevent passengers from "falling out",) and also if you think about it, doing so would "force" the buyer to buy AC. Salesman, "You know those back windows don't roll down, safety feature. Going to get hot in there without AC". Buyer, "Better order it with AC". Salesman inside: "Cha Ching, another $500+ for AC"..

The whole issue gets beat to death. First, the only reason the GM of the era did anything was to save money. Having fixed glass obviates the need for window regulators. The 1978 cars were a lot smaller than the previous generation and the lack of window hardware allowed the arm rests to be recessed, making the hip measurement seem wider but in reality it was moot. In the USA it was not that much of an issue but in Canada it was, because most of the Malibu's sold in Canada at the time didn't have a/c. Whatever the the reason, GM didn't do it in any other car ever again.

The explanation that General Motors gave for the rear windows that didn’t roll down on that era G body four door sedans was that there would have only been room for a regulator that would allow the window to lower between two and three inches due to safety bracing contained within the door. We had a 1982 Pontiac Bonneville G four door and it’s rear vent lanes were electrically controlled as part of the power window package.

I have a '78 Cutlass that was off the road for a similar amount of time, trees growing out of the bumpers and all, it actually had great front brakes when I got it going, I actually drove it around like that for a little while, the rears didn't work because of a plugged brake hose. I threw some new brake hoses on it and new wheel cylinders, but then the master went out while bleeding the brakes, so I swapped that and it's been fine since. The dipstick tube should be on the driver's side below the number 5 cylinder. You should be able to see the " pocket " on the oil pan right by the filter. I remembered helping him grinding the valve using some stick with suction cup on the stick and some weird paste, and helping him putting back that small metal thing while he pushing down the valve spring, and many more. I learnt a lot about car, especially those old carburetted cars. He passed away from colon Ca in 2019. Now I'm restoring his 1989 1.3 carburetted Lancer with the complicated Aisan carb on it, to honour his memories. What a wonderful dad you are. Seeing your videos makes me missed my dad. The reason for the big heater/ac box under the hood was the design of the dashboard. In order to recess the dash and make it smaller to increase interior passenger seating room. To give more knee and leg room, the dash panel was moved closer to the windshield. For their size, these cars have quite a bit of interior room. When they migrated to front wheel drive later on, the space the transmission, driveline and rear drive axle was added to the interior space.

My brother had a pretty nice 2 door when we were kids, back before they were as desirable and had a pretty nice wagon a few years ago. I actually saw a factory manual wagon on marketplace a little while ago, but the price was way up there and they knew what they had. The round, black wire is for the oil sending unit just below the distributor on the driver's side, back of the block. The other white plug looks like the windshield wiper drive motor supply with washer and intermittent controller..... but I could be wrong. The lack of rear window regulators was a safety feature for child protection. The "wing windows" was a vent. Many cars limited the level of, or eliminated altogether, the rear windows going down. The 305 Quadra jet carb started at 500 CFM and went up to 600 CFM. (I would pull the numbers off the block to verify the CID) Loving family involvement.... I am a new sub! Love those old Malibus! The "no roll" down rear windows might be part of the police package, some had it. If it says "certified" on the speedometer then it's a police package. Keep up the awesome content!! 👍🏁 New subscriber here! I came over from Hot Rod Hoarder's channel. 😎

Mom had a 79 Malabu with the V-6. Getting to the rear plugs on both banks, was best achieved under the wheel-wells. I liked that car much better than the 88 Escort that replaced it.

Dad bought my mom a used '79 Malibu Classic Coupe 267 cid V8 around 1983, Pale yellow with caramel interior, pleather bucket seats & console. Became mine in 1985, parents drove it out to CA from TX that summer. A couple of years later dad drove it to NJ for my niece. Great car, good looking, smooth & quiet.

The reason why they didn’t roll down in the back is because it was a “cost saving measure” that didn’t go over to well with customers. I was told the vent windows in the back were added just a few years after customer complaints about ventilation on hot summer days if the A/C broke. The vent window didn’t go over to well either. So then they began to add rolling windows in the economy version again to satisfy GM’s customers. I don’t know for a fact but that is what i was told bu someone who knows those 80s cars.

Good video for showing younger kids the ins & outs about older cars. Most kids these days don't know anything about non-fuel injected engines. They are more interested in video games & that stuff. It's real good to get all the family in the video, even the grandad. Looks like It was real fun driving that old car again!!

First start now that’s a Chevy small block for ya there. This would be a good flip for resale or keep. For a moment there it sounded like it had aftermarket camshaft but that’s probably the carburetor. Do the brakes delete the catalyst converter and run a nice sounding muffler. Those 305 have nice torque up to 4500 rpm and decent power. This would make a nice sleeper here. Shhhhhhh. Stuff the big block in here and a ford 9inch diff.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the comments but these Malibu Classic's, as they were called, were used by many local Police Departments as their cruisers. They were equipped with the 305 or the 350 small block, 4bbl carburetors, posi traction rear ends and heavier suspensions. They were a formidable vehicle and for the most part were hard to out run with the HP to weight ratio it had. I did a few ride alongs with my local PD back in the 80's and these were the vehicles they had at the time. I would love to get my hand on one now but they are really cost prohibitive now days., even in that shape it will still cost more than usual because people now know what they have.
