Former German soldier here (2009-2021). We've been trained for classical frontline and trench warfare a lot. Most of the manuals were still from WW II and had been slightly changed. I have to be honest that I often ranted with other comrades about how "useless" it felt to learn all of this because "nobody fights like this anymore" (too much focus on the war on terror asymmetrical warfare). Got proven wrong on that one. Strangely enough though I still remember everything by heart from what they've told us. Stay safe out there guys!

I am an NVG tech and these guys are 100% correct. Phones use the Infared light for a couple of reasons including seeing your face in the dark. Through NVGs you can see peoples phones very clearly in pockets and under other pieces of clothing, it is extremely bright. I also recommend taking very good care of your NVGs, there are a bunch of different ways to create faults in your intensifier or cause any misalignment. I am sure you can find a declass publication describing different intensifier damage and how to identify it. Also take time to ensure everything is adjusted, especially your collimation. I love when people know exactly what they are talking about and Garand Thumb never misses.

For tripwire detection, you can also modify the stick method with a 3-4 foot length of paracord or flagging tape. Let it hang down from the end of the stick and watch for the flagging to begin to bend as it catches the wire. Flagging is super light so less likely to set off the wire. You can also use a visible laser and slowly sweep up and down, left and right. Watch for the laser to reflect off of the wire or line.

The only reason we've gone back to trench warfare is because it's well-armed white guys versus well-armed white guys again for the first time in 70 years, except this time it's in open fields unlike the majority of WW2, where trenches were pointless by virtue of the Axis forces having equal (and sometimes superior) air power... Following WW2, we fought nothing but poorly trained (in comparison) men weilding poorly maintained Russian-made rifles in the tropical forrests of Asia where trenches were pointless for a completely different reason to WW2. Trenches exist when both sides have respectable weapon systems, but almost no air support, and it's not simply an asymmetrical Turkey shoot against compariatively untrained, illiterate religious zealouts who have been promised 72 virgins in the afterlife.

I was an operator on "Grad", in Russian, Grad means hail. The weapon although obsolete, in the hands of a skilled crew is absolutely devastating. We drilled to the point where it would take us 60 seconds from a tarp covered and packed to go truck, to put it into a firing position. The cadences of fire were 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0 seconds. It means that a "packet" of 40 122mm rockets could be sent in 20 seconds, lower the barrels and go away. Maximum range for our Grad was 28km, at that distance, the spread of the packet covers 1 hectar of land (100x100m); kill radius of a single rocket is 50m, or that's what was considered effective fire on target. Our battery consisted of 3-5 systems, whereas Russian can be 10-15....so yeah, if you survive that, you can have yourself another birthday.

yeah but reloading with one rocket per wooden box must have sucked
@jogados
@jogados 2 місяці тому
@@zeroxception It does, a truck pulls up with loaded crates, the rocket itself weighs 66.6 kgs, with the crate it's 100kgs. The barrels have to be angled, one of the guys climbs behind them, he is guiding the rocket into the barrel, the other two, usually bigger guys, carry the rocket and push it in, then the guide holds it at the end for the final push where in most cases other two guys are pushing his elbow because he can't (in most cases) push it in himself in order for rocket to click into the place. The final live fire when I was in training took in February 2012, it was -20 celsius, we stood there for hours before they finally fired the damn thing. The other problem was that with that temperature, you still had to open the soviet metal boxes that had metal discs that go on top of the warhead, and since they've been made at least 50 years ago, they've been sitting wrapped in a greasy paper, waxed, all that time. Naturally we had to scrape off the wax which at that point was like hardened plastic. Taking off the gloves got my hands stiff pretty soon and it was hell to get that shit off the discs...

The #1 lesson I'm drawing here is, regardless of training and experience, keep an open mind on kit. Make sure you're ready, willing, and able to adapt your kit to changing circumstances. I find it amazing that trench warfare is still so relevant, despite advances in tech.

Big takeaway from this video for me is how FPVs and Overwatch drones sound different. That's big information for me. I greatly appreciate you garand thumb.
