Sub-GHz frequency bands are ideal for applications in Metering, Garage Door Openers, Building and Industrial Automation, Security, and Lighting. It boasts longer range and better object penetration capabilities when compared to 2.4 GHz. Additionally, sub-GHz devices are less prone to interference.
One challenge with sub-GHz wireless products is communicating with existing mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, which only support Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in the 2.4 GHz band. Silicon Labs offers a complete hardware and software solution via the Wireless Gecko SoCs that can simultaneously run both Bluetooth Low Energy and Sub-GHZ protocols in a single chip.
In this demo, we showcase a light that is communicating with both BLE and Sub-GHz protocols. It can be controlled via Sub-GHz with the board, or via BLE with the iPad, all while also communicating its on/off status over BLE to the iPad.
This opens up new possibilities for sub-GHz wireless applications such as smart metering, whereby a technician can take local meter readings using a mobile app and Bluetooth.
Sub-GHz and Bluetooth dynamic multiprotocol technology can also be used to enable location-based services by integrating beacons into connected lighting or building automation devices that scale with infrastructure.
