We designed this CH552-based QT Py board before the chip shortage, but now parts are plentiful so we made some prototypes and are trying out the CH55xduino (github.com/DeqingSun/ch55xduino) board support package. and, it works! but watch out, its C not C++ so you can't use the huge collection of existing libraries and drivers. however, for about '40 cents' per chip, you get a 8051 with native USB that can do CDC/HID, has 4x 8-bit ADCs, hardware serial, I2C, SPI and doesn't need a crystal or a lot of passives. obviously there's down sides to such a minimal 8-bit microcontroller chip but we think it could be super fun for some very basic USB projects!

8051? For a moment I was checking the date to see if this video is from April 1st

This brought back fond memories of creating ignition/etc controllers for Vance & Hines racing. Neither I nor V&H want to revisit but still it's cool. Learn Assembly! 🤓

Several of my prior jobs used 8051s and variants. SO MUCH SIMPLER than today's chips! No system clock trees to setup, no pin definitions and rerouting to worry about... So for simple lights on/lights off timers and such, forget multicore devices with firmware frameworks and rtoses, and go with an 8051.

I always wanted to hack on a 51 back in the day but it was too hard, but this looks like a perfect playground for a port of CamelForth for 8051. I’ll now be preoccupied with watching the adafruit store for when it drops 😀

I'm definitely down to play with an 8051 as soon as this hits the store!

For the authentic experience, develop on an Intel Intellec MDS-80 “blue box” using the PL/M-51 compiler.

OMG yes! Then wait for the UV Eraser to wipe the old EPROM so it can be reprogrammed. PL/M - Ada's great-grandfather.

YES! IT IS 8051! But with USB! With just 2 caps it runs. I like it. Wish more libraries.

arduino libary support isnt great so unless you want to write a driver, buttons and leds is about all its good for.

8051? Dear god... this arch should stay in the retirement home... i know stc micro and WCH still use it but cmon it's 2024... arm is so cheap now you've got 14 cent puyas (PY32F002A) running an arm M0 core... if you need usb a 20 cent CH32V003 from wch can bit-bang usb, puyas could too in theory. for 50 cents you get a CH32V203 which has native usb. All of the previous chips have C++ compilers...
