I am not from the USA. To me this pandemic is like a worldwide drop of a curtain that reveals what each country is about. And the curtain of the "American dream" has dropped to reveal just how elitist, arrogant, unequal and incompetent USA politics is. I am truly sorry for the people who have to suffer. The fact that they can be diagnosed with the virus and left on their own (to infect others and die) because their hospital stay will cost as much as a Caribbean cruise or a new car... it's insanity. No paid sick leaves, no universal healthcare, no loss of employment prevention. Trickle-down economics my ass.

This reminds me of a joke my grandfather used to say: A guy went to his neighbor's house and there was rainwater coming in through a hole in the roof, so he asked why he doesn't fix it. And the neighbor said "It's raining out, I can't fix it now". So he asked why he doesn't fix it when it's not raining out, and he said "Well, when it's not raining out there isn't water coming in, so I'm not worried about it...".

Still life imagery is rarely something that speaks emotional volumes, it showcases the intricacies in everyday objects. An ex of mine once painted pairs of scissors. You're meant to appreciate aspects you pass off when it's not painted, like the colors or shadows or texturing. You also, conveniently, want to make sure it's something that not everyone else is doing, so everyone picks something different, for the most part.

Ignoring that fact that it takes so much skill to make photorealistic art (hey if anyone can do it, why can't you or i?), I mean at its heart art isn't just about creativity, it's about about expressing yourself, not just the style you use to express it. If she's really trying to convey the idea of what's needed and yet missing then I think she has done a fantastic job at it.

I'm an "essential worker", I just turned 18, and have been working during a pandemic, 30+ hours a week at Wendy's, because I can't afford to take time off or quit because I'm saving to leave a toxic household. I make shit money, while I wake up every morning at 6am to go to work, risking my health, to serve fucking frostys to people who just *had* to leave their house for damn ice cream. Even better, Wendy's was given a loan from the government to give out "bonuses" to their workers, and if they didn't give us the bonus, they'd have to pay it back, so yesterday I got my "bonus" for risking my health for a shit company and it was only 140$ because they chose to pay us based off of ONE week of work, instead of the now months we've been working during this. For fuck's sake, if you're not an essential worker and you're going through a drive through at least put fucking masks and gloves on.
@md79melissa
@md79melissa 3 роки тому
thank you this exactly our "bonus" was free meals instead of just 50% off and the minute our state lifted quarantine we went back to regular prices and less than 2 weeks later we had 3 people out with corona no one is enforcing masks and I'm scared that I'm gonna die leaving kids behind fuck Wendy's
@--enyo--
@--enyo-- 3 роки тому
Just a quick point: Masks yes, gloves no. Gloves do nothing but transfer contamination from one surface to another. You do not contract COVID through the skin on your hands. Hand sanitiser is not designed to be used on latex, it is designed to be used on skin. It can actually degrade the latex and make it more prone to transfer infection. As well as a mask everyone should be carrying some sort hand sanitiser. Gloves should not be worn outside of healthcare settings (where there are very strict procedures, training, and guidelines/indications for PPE) unless dealing with specific risks like chemical exposure or blood/body fluid exposure. Just wash and sanitise your hands like crazy. To protect yourself, and protect others. All gloves do is prevent people from practicing correct hand hygiene.

@Julie W. It's a trade off. Antimicrobial soaps and sanatizers are more effective against viruses too, and the superbug issue has far more to do with medicine than cleaning supplies, since brute chemical force (the thing sanatizers and soaps use) is much harder for bacteria to adapt against. kurzgesagt did a good job explaining about super bugs on their channel. Really though, the far more important part is that you wash your hands regularly, regardless of what soap you use.

I genuinely believe humanity's idea of "prosperity" is inherently flawed and we need to take a good, long, hard look at ourselves in the mirror to decide if allowing billionaires to treat the world like a fleshlight and avoid any consequences for it whatsoever, thanks to their money, is *really* what we want our world to be like.

I am a "critical" worker for a state prison system. We received a video from our secretary stating that everything we were hearing about stay at home orders does not apply to is because we chose to work. In a prison! Don't get me wrong, I am so happy to still have a paycheck, but seriously, way to make us feel better about exposing ourselves and the inmates. We have been pushed to continue having groups so we can continue to expose a bunch of people daily. Luckily, our local management has reduced programing.

I am the same here. I work at a public school, and even though the state governor had long ordered that schools remain closed to students and all learning shift to remote for the rest of the school year, our administration still pressure all staff to come into the building and work (preparing worksheet packets and other inane measures because we don't have enough computers and internet access for families). They've also already told us that we won't get pay raises next year because of the state budget cuts. Overall, I don't know about you, but I am so sick of *money dictating everything,* from whether we have sufficient staff and resources to adequately serve our families, to now not even having enough hospital beds and ventilators for victims _dying_ from COVID. If you have not heard about a *Resource Based Economy,* I highly encourage you to learn more about it: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/pp6oh5t_hX6dmJc.html

I happily pay almost 50 % of my salary ( as a person with no dependents) each months for social security, health care, unemployment and taxes to finance free education up to university and so forth, knowing that if I should get sick or become unemployed my social net will save me. I used to work Monday nights were we saw patients with symptoms of Covid for testing. I was actively exposing myself to them. I did have the proper PPE on (double masked, googles, and plastic shields between me and the patients) and I was sanitizing once an hour during that 3 hour overtime shift and patients were not allowed to come within 6 feet of me. I NEVER GOT COVID! I am extremely lucky. Also my employer gave us extra money in our holiday bonus. I’m talking hundreds of dollars for me alone! I told my bf that I wasn’t doing anything special and that I’m just happy to help. He then told me that I am “an essential worker and I am putting my life on the line to help these people. The bonus I got is also kinda hazard pay.” I started crying because I never thought of it that way. I know it sounds stupid because of what I did but still. My nurses and providers had more contact with those patients then me. I’m just up front checking people in and out. It never scared me because I knew I was protected.

And despite the fact they passed this $2 trillion aid package, Trump and his henchmen have done all they could to sabotage it and make it harder for people to actually receive any benefits. And though many of those harmed ARE the trump supporters, they believe Fox News and support him even more for it, like some messed up submissive masochists who think they're fking Job and Trump is God. Meanwhile, in Europe, countries worked in January and February to pass packages that paid *employers* up to 80% of the cost of their employees' wages if they DID NOT lay them off. But Trump was too busy then telling everybody it was under control -- that there "was only 15 cases and in two weeks it was going to be like zero" (sic.) only to gaslight the nation a month later with this crap about how he always took it seriously.

There is an iceberg but we didn't hit the iceberg. We hit the iceberg, but the damage will be repaired very shortly. The iceberg is a Chinese iceberg. We are taking on water but every passenger who wants a lifeboat can get a lifeboat, and they are beautiful lifeboats. Look, passengers need to ask nicely for the lifeboats if they want them. We don't have any lifeboats, we're not lifeboat distributors. Passengers should have planned for icebergs and brought their own lifeboats. I really don't think we need that many lifeboats. We have lifeboats and they're supposed to be our lifeboats, not the passengers' lifeboats. The lifeboats were left on shore by the last captain of this ship. Nobody could have foreseen the iceberg. With myself working in a grocery store, and my partner currently for a pizza chain, I have never been more acutely aware of our safety than during this. I've been physically threatened more than once over shortages in the store I work in, and cursed/verbally threatened more than I'd care to count. My partner is put at risk with every house he has to deliver to, and that's in tandem with the "normal" issues with delivery. On top of that, customers have coughed and/or sneezed on us more than we'd probably admit. And tbh, suddenly being referred to as "essential work" within the past month has me extremely conflicted. On one hand, I completely see the reasoning. People need to be able to eat, and we're both doing our part in that. But, on the other, these are a lot of the same people who, pre-Covid, called people with jobs like mine & my partner's "unskilled", "lazy", and would berate us for not having "real jobs" while simultaneously saying that we don't deserve an adequate and livable wage for what we do.

And despite the fact that it's very unlikely any of us, rural, YT commenter, random person on street, will actually ever be rich enough to any of those policies to apply. Nory-chan - It's a PR exercise. People are waking up finally to the great financial inequities under which they live and seeing these corporations and their owners for what they are. The pandemic has exacerbated the situation. Made it plainer. And the owners are frightened of the bad publicity. So a cheap public Thank You, the smiley face solution, will do the trick, make us look like good guys. Anyone fooled? With coronavirus sickness being a 'force majeure', surely there should be no time limit on paid sick leave if a person has the virus and is at home or in hospital recovering from it. Some people recover quickly, others slowly. Bezos could probably afford to personally pay for all his staff to have sick pay and health insurance for the duration of the pandemic and not see a change in his lifestyle. And the paltry 'hazard pay' cited below is hardly going to cover anyone's medical bills or pay the bills.

On top of that, if I got sick on the job, I recall them mandating I had to go to this urgent care in the middle of nowhere or the company would not cover it. But you don't realize, you CANNOT reason with a cynic. He isn't trolling, he genuinely believes that this situation is unfixable- its a microcosm that I'm sure you all must have dealt with. Be it gun control, abortions, equal rights whatever it is, your friend from the opposite camp really BELIEVES his viewpoint to be the Biblical truth. That's why your logic and reasoning is interpreted as bearing malafide intentions and brutally supressed/ignored. She has one child who is severely autistic and is mostly nonverbal. She spent her days locked in her room barely able to lift her phone to send a text. Meanwhile, her boss is trying to send over patient paperwork for her to work on. Apparently, our time off the clock is never really our own. She was expected to be back in the store TREATING PEOPLE whilst still being infected not three days later after her initial fever. I myself got a low grade fever just after she went on sick leave. I had been treated by that nurse two days prior and so I was understandably nervous. Hours ahead of my shift and tried to call in sick. I hadn't called in once in 7 years, so I figured that to be on the safe side I needed to stay home and wait it out. However, my boss told me that there wasn't anyone who could take my place and that he would only come in if my fever spiked. So, I went in. I needed the money and I certainly don't want to risk any retaliation. As an aside, I have sold very little of what constitutes as essential goods. Mostly, I've sold hair dye, cosmetics and liquor. I've had such an uptick in criminal activity that in the last 7 days I've had to call out police 4 times. I don't know. I'm just tired of wondering if today's the day I get it and bring it to my family. I'm tired for all of us.

In the end we as the population get a better society for everyone. The problem is corrupt leaders witch we don't have that many of.

John Oliver is a pretty well known lefty among conservatives. Even if he just covers the news, they don't like that he talks about the president in a negative light and consider him to be entirely left. So conservatives aren't going to be watching this.

It's hard for people not in the US to understand just how much the conservative party actively demonizes that idea of Medicare for All. Aside from higher taxes, they'll tell people that the healthcare isn't as good in countries with M4A, that you have long wait times, that people abuse the system since it's free and so on. Then they of course attach "socialism" onto it for added scares. And so even people with no healthcare will continue to vote against concept of M4A because they've been told constantly that it's bad. It's a real uphill battle just to try to make things better for people.

30% tax is cheap AF... Us Government took the larger half of my paychecks when I earned double time wirking long hours in the painters union.

Truly you are the speaking, knee slapping heart and soul of a country you don't hail from. Thank you for bringing to light what absolutely must change and having the courage to say it over and over. There is an opportunity here and I hope we don't squander it. AND, I am so stuck thinking about my own self that I forget what others are experiencing until you remind me. Thank you for your compassion John Oliver.
