The Final Jeopardy clue a few years ago was something to the effect of "This is the only country outside Europe, where Dutch is an official language." Correct response: "What is Suriname?" I was able to get it then, and able to get it this time. I also remember there being an entire Jeopardy round category on Suriname, more than a decade ago.

One of the reasons I love this show/contest is that I am constantly learning. Even as an Old Dog (senior citizen). I also feel *SO* dumb sometimes! LOL At least they didn’t know either…

@@judithmoore7892 Right?!?! LOL Twenty-five years ago I wanted to be on the show, but never put forth the effort to audition/test. Have always had a problems with names, so at this age & general forgetfulness I am hopeless! 🤯

@@judithmoore7892 Hey, at least you know the answer. Maybe not quick enough for this show, but that shows you’re not “losing it.” I worry because I have the opposite problem. Especially when it comes to names, as mentioned previously. I sometimes “know” the answer before the clue is finished being read, can clearly see an image of the person’s face, and even “hear” their voice if it’s someone recent enough to be recorded, but the name will just not come to me. In recent years something similar happens with almost everything. Sigh! 😔

This one got me, I was a third of the way there. I knew it was going to be in the Caribbean or South America but couldn’t remember any specifically Dutch colonies. So I ended up thinking maybe it’s Indonesia but that doesn’t work because I don’t think they were technically a colony. Then I thought perhaps Namibia but couldn’t remember if it was a colony of the Netherlands or Germany 😩

Stephen's gameplay today reminded me of Jessica Stephens in the last Tournament of Champions. Or maybe Andrew Brady when Stephen won his 8th game. Andrew had to take a swing at the last clue and ended up being in the red when he was at 0.

I got it when I thought of Dutch colonies; Surinam came right to my mind. The countries you mentioned were British colonies.

@@josephosheavideos3992 South Africa was a Dutch Colony. When they said the tiny population, I was thinking of tiny countries that were linked to South Africa.

@@mattuw82 While South Africa started out a Dutch colony, the British took over by 1800. Today, South Africa is a member of the British Commonwealth (as are Lesotho and Eswatini).

Today's contestants were not particularly bad. They simply had the misfortune to encounter such formidable subjects as art, science, literature, history and geography (unlike the other TOC participants so far, who have rattled off correct responses to pop-culture clues with tremendous ease). As we have seen in recent years, it is quite possible to do well on this show without knowing much about the aforesaid subjects, but it is not always a good idea to come to the show with that mindset. It is just as easy to learn the basic facts about the countries of the world as it is to learn about TV sitcoms, pop-culture princesses, pop-culture dragons, the Emmys, British actors and actresses, etc.

I got the right answer simply by thinking what possible Dutch colony could have had such a small population. I was thinking it might be some tiny random island or something but fortunately they weren't that mean

Brutal clue. Decolonization saw so many countries saying Nope. Who's even heard of Suriname/French Guyana? Papua New Guinea was my guess as well.

The Netherlands didn't have much of a colonial empire remaining by the 20th century, aside from Indonesia, which became independent much earlier and had way more people to fit the answer. I guessed Curacao, but apparently that's still part of the Netherlands. And French Guiana is still part of France, and doing pretty well for itself compared with the rest of the neighborhood. Good state investment, and a great location near the Equator means it's actually the location of Europe's largest spaceport
