Watched a good portion of both WDR's, seemed to be some issues with the new GSE. Tank Farm spooled up, there was venting on the OLM tower, and the OLM itself, and at least in the first WDR, some fuel loading in the ship (S28). Never saw any fuel get loaded into the booster though (may have missed that?). Lotta new GSE they're testing out and debugging I'm sure.

Refresh my memory please. What is GSE? Anyway, there's supposedly a road delay scheduled on the 20th from midnight to 3am & then from 8-8. I'm wondering if they're going to destack & then move either or both S28 & B10 back to Mega-bay for closer inspection and possible repair. IF they know what the problem is then they could either repair or even swap out one of them for the next newer vehicle in line. Although that latter scenario is probably unlikely. But I hope they get whatever the problem is resolved soon. I'd love to see a successful WDR and maybe static fire next week.

I wonder if these are not failures so much as testing to find out how fast they can fill. They’ve spoken previously about the amount of propellant loss because of slow-filling and boil off.

That looks to be at least a year to 2 years away as it will be that long before the new tower is built plus the the OLM. But then Space X has a way of getting work done faster than many expect.

I take it that no explanation is forthcoming about the aborts? I heard some conjecture during the live such as valves freezing up due to a faster Prop load @NasaSpaceFlight .

Yeah, the only real way we'll get an answer is if someone from SpaceX says something which is possible, but quite unlikely for this scenario. Otherwise we just have to see what sort of work they do over the next few days and make the best educated guess possible based on that

I'm curious: they are moving a "complete" set of tower sections around from Florida, so why are they also making them here? Are these going to be additional ones to make the tower higher?

They may be making a tower that is for the booster and/or ship returning. That way if something goes wrong the GSE doesn’t get damaged.

The sections you see being built at Starbase are the ones they never got a chance to complete in Florida. These are sections 8 and 9 of the tower. The ones that were fully built at KSC were sections 1 through 7. Of these complete sections, section 7 was the first to move to port of Brownsville and is still there. The sections currently en route to Brownsville are sections 1, 2, 3, and 6 of the tower. Sections 4 and 5 are still st KSC awaiting to be moved to Brownsville whenever their time comes. I'd guess that'll be around middle of March or so.

Unfortunately shit happens. Pre-flight tests with a new fully developed rocket system is always going to show signs of first time failures and maintenance. That’s why rocket launch tests right now are taking this long because this might have to develop more technical improvements to the rocket before they can properly lift off like the previous starship launches. Patience is a virtue

The Fire X test is sprays nitrogen gas and water under the OLM to eliminate under combustibles like methane before launch. They want to avoid the detonation that occured last summer when a spark triggered an explosion during a spin prone test. It was quite boom as it shook the cameras hundreds of yards away.

We can only wait and see if Space X has resolved the issues that caused the abort whether it was the newly installed GSE, (my guess) or something with B10 S28 or something with the OLM integration with the launch. Well, at least that narrows it down. 🙄

5% chance booster explodes, 90% chance starship doesn't re-enter successfully. See how easy it is picking numbers out of thin air? There are lots of combinations.

@@Barthhhelona seems very likely that it makes orbit. S25 was 100% nominal until the LOX Dump. So, there is no reason to think s28 won't be either. And B10 did flawless in the 33 engine static fire, so it seems likely that all 33 will fire during IFT-3, just like IFT-2.

Not to daunt your enthusiasm & best wishes, but maybe collect your thoughts before posting to keep the "chat clutter" down? Meanwhile, as an ardent observer/contributor, Re: Chopsticks Testing. When do you think physical "catch" simulations will begin, where stages will be free lifted by crane, & lowered to mimic landing dynamics, until captured? That should presage almost immediate launch/catch practices. Having viewed both IFTs, I hope to see the first catch attempt, in person. Given how payloads demands will go exponential, I anticipate weekly launches by sometime, next year!

Part of it, yeah. That's the way SpaceX works. Launch what you have, then tweak whatever didn't work on the next one and launch again. Repeat a few times and you have something that's well understood and works well. Repeat hundreds of times and you have something incredibly well understood and incredibly reliable

Space X had to attempt the Falcon 9 landing four times before finally getting the landing on the drone barge. The design of the Falcon 9 wasn't changed only the tweaking of the landing had to refined. In this case a rocket is good as is necessary for THIS LEVEL of testing and only refinements are needed like the minor adjustments in the fuel tanks to resolve why the booster had a RUD on ITF-2. At least the hope is that adjustments makes a difference.

This WAS only the second attempt at the WDR so this is understandable given how much new tanks are being used for the first time.

Seems very speculative to assume that a "WDR" was cancelled vs the engineering testing that is ACTUALLY being performed. Do you have an official SpaceX schedule of engineering testing and confirmation of "abort" or is this "mind reading" and speculation? This channel is entertaining, but are any of you actually an engineer of any sort? (asking as an actual engineer myself).

On both days of the attempted WDR there were live broadcasts by NASA SF and discussion was all about the process and the eventual abort of WDR. There is no doubt that WDR was exactly what was attempted. Twice. And aborted twice.

It is not speculative, they literally tweeted they were attempting a launch rehearsal the day before of the first WDR attempt. On both attempts the whole of Starbase (village and production site) were evacuated and the roadblock was set up at the same location it is located for launch rather than at the one they use for regular testing. On both WDR attempts the testing was stopped well before they even completed propellant load, therefore the test was obviously aborted. So yes, given all of that, we know very well they intended to perform a WDR both times and that it was aborted both times.

For me, there is a 40% chance that they were aborts. I imagine if these were actual aborts, they would have uncoupled the vehicles and made repairs.

They wouldn't need to destack the ship if the aborts are caused by the GSE instead of the vehicles. However, they plan to destack the ship soon and seem to want to roll it back.

@@schrodingerscat1863 A WDR at this point is just a GSE test so I would have still expected a full load following a flight-like countdown. They have already done GSE testing without the booster and ship so they might as well load it fully instead of these small loads.

What a HORRIBLE video ! You waste half of the time showing construction on the new tower ! AND you never say WHY both attempts were aborted ! And boy do y'all waste a lot of LOX ! Isn't it dangerous to have that much floating around where construction is occurring right nearby ? LOX explodes if you have a hot thought near it ! I didn’t see any warning signs when you were panning over the LOX farm either. SMH.

The time spent showing the construction of the tower is 24 seconds which is 2.5% the length of this video. We never say why because we don't know the reason for the aborts, only that it aborted. SpaceX is the only one that knows. Not all of those vapors is oxygen, a bunch of that is also nitrogen. The oxygen and nitrogen vapors you see there were vented out when no one was around. There are no warning signs that you can see because the place is already cleared well ahead of the testing. Even then, there are several detectors around the site that alert of high concentrations of nitrogen when people do go back to the launch site and the tank farm is in quiescent mode.

@billotto602. You are also incorrect in stating oxygen can explode when close to something hot. Oxygen is not combustible like methane or gasoline. It is classified as an accelerant and thus in the presence of a combustible substance like methane and a spark can intensify the explosion or fire.

@michaeldeierhoi4096 I worked with a LOX farm in the Navy. Regulations were so strict it wasn't funny. Oxygen is one of the 3 things needed for fire & LIQUID oxygen makes any fire grow or expand exponentially ! I've seen the entire ass end of an A6 Intruder disappear due to 2 10 liter LOX tanks. It's VERY dangerous.
