How much are you paying for cable each month?
@dathyr1
@dathyr1 3 роки тому
yes, I am paying a high price for cable and changing over to just the internet end of February. Cost i pay for cable now is $267 and keeps going up each year. With just internet it will be $78. Question, with all these various streaming packages, do all of them do ADS every 2-5 minutes? I have been trying PLUTO and does get annoying trying to watch a movie and getting clobbered by ADS every 5 minutes. Paying 60-80 dollars a month for streaming service and still getting hit by ADS would not be fun for me. Would break concentration on the movie too much. Any streaming services have no ADS when you buy the premium? Thanks for your videos
@FrugalRules
@FrugalRules 3 роки тому
@@dathyr1 Ouch! Sounds like you could definitely benefit from cutting the cord. And, glad to be of help. Good question. The issue you're running into with Pluto is that it's entirely free, so ads are really the only way they're going to make money. Streaming services do have ads, just like cable does so you will see them - just not as often as a free service like Pluto. Hulu Live offers a no ads plan for $71/mo, but it doesn't get rid of all just most and also depends on your device. FuboTV may be a better option at $65/mo, as it has ~ 40 extra channels and 250 hours of DVR space vs. 50 on Hulu Live. The fubo DVR also lets you fast forward through ads.

Not counting what I pay for Internet I was paying $161.00 a month for Satellite to get the channels I want even though that also included a lot of channels I didn't want. I was not getting any sports channels for that price. I just cut the cord last week. I would had did that a lot sooner but didn't because I used Windows Media Center which gave me DVR at no extra cost! Keep the ones I recorded forever if I wanted but Microsoft stopped supporting Windows Media Center. I saved a lot of money for years with their DVR but it was still too costly for Satellite. I am going to go with Eyestream or Philo. The only downside for me if I go with Eyestream is they don't have DVR for all of their channels. With Philo the only downside for me is they don't include the Disney Channel. Decisions, decisions lol

I cut the cord 3 months ago and have never been more pleased. My entire cable bill was $250, and I always had trouble trying to get someone on the phone to speak with, and I could understand. I now have streaming service for $65 a month, and I am amazed at how many programs there are available! For me, CABLE SUCKED!!! No more cables all over the place and that lousy (digital time was always wrong or couldn't read it!) cable box! Like most folks, considering cutting the cable and stumbled across this video when searching optional streaming services. Currently paying 160 (before tax) for internet and TV service, which I hardly ever use. So, I called up the cable company (cant verify online) and asked how much just for internet service and was quoted 65 + tax. I said that will work, as this is the basis for creating streaming the service budget. Then they start the ‘save the sale’ scripts and said they can lower the monthly payment to $140. Humm, that is a little savings, but I could save more by just going with a streaming service. Then he said hold one minute, comes back with the ‘one time’ offer of 105 for a month, no change in current service. This is a 12-month price savings, with no contract, and I can cancel the TV service at any time. That equals a savings of $55 a month, which is helpful. Still researching different options, but now I am not in a big rush.

This is now 2023 and your video is 2 years old. Even with just internet, it also boils down to what download data rates you want far as how much it will cost per month. And even with just internet from cable providers, that cost goes up every year. I do more with the internet service besides just streaming, so it is worth my monthly costs. take care.

That's a good point re: internet. We feel that's the big issue that remains to be dealt with fully. More affordable internet is needed as it's really a utility now for most.
@kimwilliams4426
@kimwilliams4426 Рік тому
We cut the cord 5 years ago. I have to admit, it really doesn't save a whole lot of money. What I didn't like about cable was the lack of choices, believe it or not. Oh there were hundreds of channels I didn't watch and the ones I did watch forced us to endure HOURS of commercials every day. Just like John and Nicole said, Cox (and other companies) are not going to be accommodating. Our internet cost nearly doubled when we cancelled cable tv. Combine that with the costs of streaming and we may even be spending a little more than we did with cable. HOWEVER! We watch what we want, when we want and we are no longer bombarded with mindless commercials. To have more control over content is worth it. So there is the consideration of "Is it worth it?"
@FrugalRules
@FrugalRules Рік тому
We'd agree that many internet companies do increase their costs. They have to, in large part, because people are leaving cable en masse. And, unfortunately or fortunately, internet is much more of a utility now than anything else - which raises its own issues. However, that doesn't mean that it doesn't save money. If you go with a premium live service and add on numerous other services, sure, it's definitely easy to spend too much. But, premium options aren't the only ones out there. There are a lot of choices to get the shows you want. So much of it comes down to dropping that cable mindset and being wise about what you subscribe to and when you do it. 🙂

We cut the cord, and are totally on board with it, but the only thing that concerns me is our use. We leave the tv on all day, and Internet companies like to limit customer use. (Most are only a terabyte) we easily use over a terabyte every month and it's two of us. Add in guests, working from home, smart devices, and an Airbnb and we will easily go over 2 terabytes every month.

We get it, but not having your TV running all day is the best option to cut down on usage. 🙂Beyond that, what of what you have running is on a local station? If it's a fair bit, using an antenna is a fantastic way to alleviate some of the usage.

Good question. Yea, most cord-cutters wouldn't for a couple of reasons. It really comes down to having internet is a necessity for most, almost like a utility. The other key reason is the price can vary so much depending on where you live, competition in that area, what speed you need, etc. etc. We pay $80/mo for our internet as we work from home and need fast internet, but that price is likely different in other areas. All that said, that's why doing the math is so important before cutting the cord. If you're not going to save anything, it likely doesn't make sense to cut. :)

I don’t stream/use streaming companies as of yet thanking about it for just Disney Channel no interest in Sports or reality TV just movies that I can get for free on Roku and possibly a subscription to a movie channel but that would be yet and I’m not going to pay over $10 for anything I get my room our Internet pay $65 a month for that I think that extremely high but when you’ve got only one service provided by the apartment building that you live in, you don’t have much of a choice

I cut the cord about 10 years ago. I put up a free TV antenna over the air and that was fine for many years. Later Spectrum offered high speed for free because of my age they want homes to be connected to high speed. I guess the government pays $30.00 a month to Spectrum. To be honest, I don't miss cable TV at all. On the internet, UKposts I watch more now than even free TV over the air. Cable companies are not happy unless you pay close to $100.00 a month. Now they are paying the price for charging too much. I know nothing about streaming. But if you don't watch much TV then cut the cord,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
@robburcham6289
@robburcham6289 Рік тому
I think "cut the Live" will be the next thing after cut the cord. With live streaming around $70 a month and probably going higher it's time to re-evaluate if we need live tv. The providers aren't going to offer a la carte options, so we're stuck with paying for dozens of channels we don't watch. Paramount includes live CBS so that's a plus and I heard Peacock may do the same with live NBC. Hulu should do it with live ABC so that would cover the major networks. Then there's the antenna option. We haven't really cut the cord until we cut the high priced live channels.
@FrugalRules
@FrugalRules Рік тому
We'd agree with you that nixing the live aspect is the next step. The overwhelming majority of top live ratings is live sports...NFL games in particular. With the ability to watch so many shows next day, there becomes less of a reason to have a premium service. Outside of Frndly, Philo, and *maybe* Sling, the live services get awfully expensive, unless you're spending the $250-$300+/month tier that we speak to frequently. Peacock does have live NBC in ~200 markets now. But, you must have the Premium Plus plan to get it. It would be nice to see Hulu do that as they're testing it a little on Disney+, so they certainly have the capability. The question is if they'd see that customers want it and give it to them.

Thanks for the feedback. There are a few main reasons for that. Costs can vary greatly, so it's not really providing a fair look at what pricing will be. Secondly, internet service is largely a utility now. If you solely had internet just to stream that'd be one thing. But, for most, that's just not the case and wouldn't need to be added. I have t-mobile home internet $50 flat a month, equipment included no data cap, please try your address on the internet website, the more demand for areas absent of coverage may get them to prioritize getting into new areas. I use about 500-600GB a month bandwidth. With no serious complaint.. I've had a few nights where the tower was under maintenance for a hour or so, reboot the modem/router and most likely it will be back on. When I did have a hardware problem they shipped me a unit quickly and gave a prorated bill just by asking. I live in a very small town of 800, the cluster of 5 adjoining towns also are covered by the same monopoly phone / internet / cable company serving less than 2K population, probably 1K homes, my roommate jumped the bandwagon and got directtv without my approval/awareness first.. expecting me to share the bill.. by February we will either get him a smart TV or a connected device. You certainly can, but if you received an email saying they canceled you should be fine. If you have equipment to return they likely will be sending you a box or sending out a tech person to get it back.

Thank you for your response. I wish they were sending a tech person to retrieve equipment but don’t do that anymore. I have to drop it off at UPS but they pack and ship for free.

I don't spend a dime on that stuff, with the smart tv's there are all kinds of free streaming and even on demand choices. But I'm easily entertained, and I love UKposts and that's there free too. But I'm a cheater, cause my sister lets me mooch of her Netfliz/Amazon/Disney+ so that's free and I don't even use them much. Hell the tv itself is a wonderful 58" JVC smart 4k tv that I bought new for only $238. That's my total investment $238.
@FrugalRules
@FrugalRules 2 роки тому
That's not a bad cost at all. You're right, many newer TVs have a lot of apps you can use to get content for free.

Can’t get my bill to $50 when I have to pay Xfinity $80 just for internet!
@FrugalRules
@FrugalRules 3 роки тому
True, but that's missing the point. The point is you need to do the math when cutting the cord. In many cases, you're going to save money by leaving the cable provider & keeping internet. And, the $50 was only an example. Some may be comfortable paying more & some less. You have to go with what works for you and your needs.

I have xfinity in Chicagoland 200MPS is 83 bucks and if you are a power user,30 bucks for unlimited. I also wish it were cheaper but with the few streaming services I have and an antenna,I save 130 bucks over what my bundle for cable and 4 boxes was.
@debhufnagel5912
@debhufnagel5912 Рік тому
I think that the whole point was more of what you watch. Not to waste your time with loyalty. Cause corporations just want money. Instead of what you bundle for internet/phone/tv. Most people it all depends on what your internet needs are. And what is available in your area. To always be on the lookout for a better deal.

Not only did our household cut the cord, we also cut television. Our household has no working television >>> by choice. Further, we do not "stream live teevee". We pay a set monthly charge for regular internet service. And we have plenty to watch on UKposts (we refuse to subscribe to UKposts teevee). Why spend money for junk television?
@FrugalRules
@FrugalRules Рік тому
That's definitely one valid approach to take if you don't want/need live TV. It saves a lot of cash too. 🙂
