High quality quick turn PCB Services www.pcbway.com In this video I will take you through the process of designing and manufacturing a custom printed circuit board with castellated holes in Kicad. I’m also explaining why someone would want to use castellated or half-moon pads in their design and the reasons include: cost saving, the ability to upgrade parts of the system, they are relatively easy to solder. I know some people stay away from using them in a project but if you need them there is no reason to stay away, as long as you work with a proper board house and you design them accordingly, the results are going to be perfect.

Just a quick note: Copper is way softer than glass - for a mill which usually cuts FR7 copper is like butter. Some board houses simply charge too much. OSH Park on the other hand does not charge anything (but doesn't guarantee perfect outcome). One of the bigger advantages of castellated holes are: you just need SMD pads on the receiving board. Through holes instead eat up routing area on all layers as we all know. One tip to circumvent extra charges: Order the board with the outline outside the holes and route (or sand) them back yourself.

I suspect board houses charge extra for castellated holes not because of "wear" that might occurs on their tooling but because they need either a special tool to cut them without ripping the plated through hole or some extra steps to make sure they are left nice and clean or maybe even a combination of these factors.

How if customer create a 'custom' footprint/pad that only have half pad and then place this 'custom' pad to the outer board, are this method will work? and will this method being charge for 'castelated service' ?

Is there any consideration for the pad on the pcb where the castellated holes will be soldered on?

Footprint pad size should be at least the size of the pad size, ideally soldermask defined pads. Footprint pad can be extended towards the exterior/interior part of the module to help with misalignment during placement but a lot of this varies depending on the specific application.

Thanks for the info. Designing these seems to be quite simple if you specify your intent with the manufacturer. I see you went with rounded rectangular pads. Is there an advantage here over circular pads?

I use rounded rectangle pads as a general rule with all of my footprint designs because it's recommended by newer IPC standards.

yes $16 more expensive for the prototyping service if you choose castellated holes.

At the time of pcb design how to decide where which track width are use

Track width is decided based on current carrying capability as well as min track width spec from the PCB fab house. In special cases you also have to consider the impedance of the track which will affect track width.
