In this project I will show you how to combine an ESP32-CAM with an ordinary security camera housing in order to create an online security camera. That means I will show you how to use the ESP32-CAM board in order to take pictures and then I will show you how to integrate it into home assistant. There we can then create an automation in order to take pictures when an intruder triggers an alarm. At the end I will then show you how to put all of the components inside a security camera housing. Let's get started!

I like the personal intro !! I have been playing with the ESP32-CAM, and find it useful for seeing what's going on at my house. The resolution isn't all that, but works well for what I'm doing. I want to connect the garage door opener to it, but have not obtained a 3.3 volt solenoid switch to simulate the button push to activate the motor. I think a transistor to one of the GPIO's will trigger the solenoid. Merry Christmas !!

This is an interesting project, all these inexpensive devboards you can get today are game-changing. Several years ago I had a webcam hooked up to a Linux PC running the 'motion' program. It would take pictures automatically when it detects motion. Running that on a Raspberry Pi or similar might be better because it could take pictures autonomously, even if your Wi-Fi is down.

Nice aspects. To deter, outside cameras are best visible on the house pointing away. Small hidden cameras with SD cards are best inside, and inside the fence pointing towards fleeing intruders. ESP32 cam are ideal for that purpose, inside a box which looks like a power outlet. Intruders are masked and hooded, so points of reference for height and step length are nice to have. Unfortunately, as long as nobody has been harmed, police in most countries are not interested, and when they catch somebody by accident, they have a history of hundreds of break-ins, sometimes thousands.

For people having issue with the "brownout" error, make sure you have a good cable. After three different cables, I finally managed to get my ESP32-CAM to work. Turns out that they are super sensitive to power fluctuations. I accidentally nudged my cable connector to my PC once, and the brownout was triggered.

Hi Scott, the video is nice is informative. I like the idea of having a inflated camera but could be a loot more useful if it could also record. My main issue is that you plugged the camera in that exposed outlet. If someone comes into the house and sees the wire they could just unplug it.

I just realised that the IRL2905 has no safe operating area for DC given in its datasheet. I've heard numerous times that it's important to use Mosfets which are specifically made for linear applications, if you want to use them as a DC Switch. Maybe that would be a great topic for a future Video? Video is top notch, as usual.

This is neat no doubt, and Im sure it helps practice skills. That being said, a prebuilt solution like the TP-link Tapos series or Wyze cameras will cost you only a little bit more, take you less time, and get you many more features like full video, an easy to use app, out of home monitoring support and more. Some of these cheap ip cams even have pan tilt, and many have no subscription fees. Basically Im saying this is neat, but would probably lose a buy it vs make it battle.
