TLDR 8:06 just in case. One more thing I forgot to mention, several cool and never seen before moves should be the norm for new heroes and reworks, and in the case of Valk's rework where they actually added a "new" form of mixup... they forgot to remove her obnoxious hitboxes and recoveries, so sadly Ill never play that because S tier heroes can eat my ass. And shoutout to all the comments on my videos I get from time to time that adress these issues, even if barely anyone manages to notice them, you guys are the goat.

It’s cause when the wu lik got added and animations began getting removed most people could tell the game was going to go into a decline. And it shows with the goofier executions for every hero, and the lack of new unique animations.

I think most of them left when all things with Horkos and the deer came forth. It's pretty much when For Honor have decided to move away from immersive medieval setting to outright fantasy with medieval elements, and maybe came back for Appolyon (but honestly who wouldn't). So yeah, I don't think they were part of this community for a long while at this point.

@@raven75257 the top 1% aren't praising those 🤣 who are you talking about. I've only seen one person praise the LB rework, and most say Jorm is very close but a tad off. Both seem very reasonable. Also, at least you can be hapoy with his takes. They're horrible, but he appeases the super casuals hard. No offense, but anyone who actually wants this game to be "playable" would hate Slanderous' takes.

The pirate believability could've been solved if they put more effort into the gun animations. Perhaps extend the animation with a little toss of the current pistol and then pulling out a new one from under her coat. It would've been a very minor animation that could've solved that entire debacle. They also could've used it as a balancing thing. Like the pistol shot does higher damage, but the animation is longer and is more punishable in teamfights.

I'd argue that instead of that, she just does a regular bash attack with the handle of her gun. It's less flashy, sure, but at least that's what makes it more believable. Because what hero can realistically body 50 gunshots to the abdomen? What are they, paintballs?

Why are we talking about believability in a game where Centurion can straight up stab someone in the clavicle without instantly killing them or where unarmed heroes take multiple straight cleaves to their body and can go on fighting? Pirate has unlimited ammo because the move is cool and is a reskinned damaging bash follow up. Black Prior has an undodgeable top heavy finisher because the mixup and fighting game guesswork is more important than not bending whatever mild believability the game has. This is a fighting game, non-believability is already an inherent part of it, so why are people making a big deal about stuff that honestly doesn't matter when the character design is already strongly focused on the most concrete part of the identity, and certain things adjusted to match the fact that it's a fighting game? Sounds like excessive whining in order to drive home otherwise solid points in other areas.

Pirate's animations suck as well. she always spins for heavy finishers, even when it would make no sense to spin. The opposite is try for her finisher lights. Even after her zone, for example, where her sword ends al the way on her left, if she then wants to throw a right light, she will bring it back all the way, and take another swing in 500ms

One thing I love about black prior is how after all this time he has still not fallen out of the meta, he only recently got handed a buff, a lot of this is down to him having one of the most fun yet versatile moves in the entire game, bulwark counter. Imo, this is what we need, something fun, versatile, looks cool and very much viable for all new heros.

To be honest we need another hero that can counter 4 people at once, maybe with a counter attack that differs its animation based on the number of gankers. Would be cool to see. IMO.

@@sirreginaldfishingtonxvii6149 Same here. On console he feels so clunky and slow. I can’t land a single heavy and every one gets parried. I have to light spam just to get anywhere offensively. People also fake and makes you miss the .3 second flip and get punished so I don’t use it unless it’s a gank. I barely use BP, but because of this my KDA with him is about 200/300 but with Warlord I’m about 400/150 because he’s actually viable in a fight with his hyper armor?

That's exactly what I was thinking. She's not exactly complex, but when you can read your opponent right she deletes health bars, her traps are really fun to use and are really cool to me, and she can look pretty good imo.

You may not know about the backward zone on berserker. It's very situational but it can be good in teamfights and a get off me move since it's really safe. Berserker could also dodge out of lights years ago but I think they removed it because it was SUCH an OP flicker and was too unique

I like to use it as a good option select if I have the health for a positive trade. If they throw their attack through no problem I got hyper armor along with a 32 dmg top heavy to dunk on u

Thank you for putting this into words. I've been off the For Honor train for a hot minute and I realize that part of it has to do with the fact that everything unique was sacrificed at the altar of balance. The cool factor, the heroes with specific niches and gimmicks, the minion clear animations, all of that had to go away because it made some characters unviable in a competitive scene. So everything started to feel the same, the characters started to play the same, every new character was just different (or sometimes reused) animations but the combos and strategy of playing them and playing against them remained the exact same. I got into this game because it felt fucking incredible to find what a hero was good at and find a way to make it work against a matchup that wasn't in your favor. Then all of that started to change and I listened to the community praise these changes as fixing the game...when they "fixed" exactly what drew me in to it in the first place.

I feel like increasing chip damage a bit can help reduce the need for the same bash-undodgable mix up cuz do you feel like you’re still doing damage while making standard heavy-feint mixups more viable Edit: or make blocking unblockables do slightly less damage if actually blocked to kinda reduce unblockable spam, I don’t think unblockables should always be the best move

I have been apart of the For Honor community since launch day in 2017. This game means the world to me, but seeing the life drained from this amazing world and crammed into a "viability can" in the last couple years absolutely wounds me. I remember when every single hero, no matter if they were good, were so interesting! I remember the slow and methodical might of old highlander, the unbreakable bastion of Conqueror. Yet seeing them get reworked into nothing but...bash, HA, UB spam has broken my heart. I can't say how much this video nails how I feel about the state of this game that means so much to so many. I just hope one day ubisoft learns that there are more ways to make a hero viable than to make them annoying and exhausting to fight.

You’re also neglecting some real big issues that I think is being clouded by nostalgia. For example, if you took old for honor in the modern crossplay age , no one would be playing any other character but warlord, Shinobi, and warden.

​@@vapor_snake920Back in the day I made whole enemy team's aim my Lawbringer the entire game. Most people used the easy heroes, but it was so fun to learn the hybrids and steamroll "duels" in Dominion and aside newbies, players where really good with the limitations of their main heroes. Nowadays every hero feels the same, most players play the same and I play with almost every hero since ever to have this perspective (the fun factor is my main in this frikin game).

To make pirate more believable with her infinite ammunition maybe Ubisoft should add a move where she reloads and make he move that involve her pistol do more damage. So then theirs an incentive to reload and do more damage with her pistol which would add more depth and complexity to the character.

While we're at it, a good heavy should instantly kill most characters since people can't believably take a full swing of a sword to their chest, arms, or really any body part without immediately being taken out. I think that would make for a pretty believable medieval game

Pirate shouldn’t even be in the game. There’s so many other historical countries with their warriors that would have existed roughly around the same time as the rest of the heroes in the game. Pirate is a solid 300 years later than all of the other heroes. Just the fact that it’s simply named “pirate” doesn’t fit the game.

I wish for honor could have really utilized its class systems more to make heroes like back in the initial days. Vanguards are easy to pick up but hard to master with few chains but a range of move properties, assassins have dodge cancels and utilize bleed, heavies have hyper armor and unblockables, and (back when hybrids only had pole arms) sweeping undodgeables and tuning to whatever they’re mixed with. Now a days every character is just a hybrid that can access any kind of move under the sun. Want an assassin with unblockables, undodgeables, dodge cancels and hyper armor? Play the hybrid pirate. Want a heavy with chunky damage, variable timed moves with hyper armor and unblockables. The only one balanced to that is shugoki who is falling behind again. Want a simple vanguard with a couple chains but solid mix up potential? Well you have warden, but he’s too simple and dlc warmonger just blatantly out shines him at this point. Everything is starting to blur together in balance when we need more variety and separation from each class and their properties

Stuff like that could also lead to new moves in each class. Heavies have unparry-able moves and more displacement since their weapons are so massive, vanguards would have more basics like bashes, hyper armor and kensei style soft feints. Assassin’s could build on what pk and nobushi do where you have to work to mix up your opponent, but when you do it pays off with bleed giving moves new properties. Hybrids could have undodgeables, stance changes, traps or any variety of moves from the previous three classes. We need variety

This might be my favorite For Honor video yet. You nailed so many points when it comes to the bigger picture of how the game is vs how it should be. The 6 points of how to make/rework a character is something I wasn't able to explain out loud, but the more I thought about it the more it made sense, because deep down THIS is what I believed, I just needed to hear it. The only small little nitpick is the Jorm Running Attack, I personally feel like the old one looked smoother animation wise (as a rep 57 Jorm main, I assure you the new Running Attack has terrible tracking, test it on some Soldiers if you don't believe me) OK but other than that small minute nitpick, this video is legit fucking amazing, you have my full respect

I remember when I first started playing this game I mained nobushi because I liked how unique her flow was. Back in the day her lights were some of the slowest so you had to outrage your opponents and hidden stance was super important. But now so many characters have dodge cancels it makes her feel so less special and it sucks.

2:13 another note on complexity I’d add would be even just things that don’t appear strong or even very useful at first glance. things like warden’s (and wm who’s built on his “frame”) extremely short recovery from forward dodge bash into neutral lights. Being able to fake out/bait a dodge forward attack “joust” at range and immediately crushing counter is very niche, but extremely fun+rewarding, and is a maneuver exclusive to warden. Similarly, knowing this short recovery to the neutral lights exists allows you to develop a synergy between it and your bash mixup. Even players with solid reactions are thrown off by the added element of what they can expect to happen after a forward dodge. Forward dodge heavy? Bash? Charge bash? Bash feint? neutral light? empty dodge/bait that they should try and punish? dodge gb? it opens up a whole new playstyle for warden that focuses on using single lights to conserve stamina while sacrificing immediate damage, but using that extra stamina to feed high pressure loops strung together with more feints and harder to read forward dodges. It isn’t strong by any means, but it is a fantastic unique tool for attempting to play around mind games and boosting available fun with the hero.

Personally what helps me take interest in a hero is the fashion, that’s why I play and main Glad, along with playing a lot of pro hi, Kyoshin, warden, and a few others.

Cool factor is what got be back in this game a few times, last and most retaining has been Afeera due to the complexity behind the flip. Lot of people do the same thing (flip into knee), but while it can work, it is very easily interrupted on a light, and has a pretty safe dodge window. Learning the match ups, what you can light, what you need to heavy, when to kick, what can be CCd and not, when its good to fast flip or slow flip, and what you really cant do anything against is really fun and the depth there off of one move is really fun. Some moves do feel very... "cause the meta said so", which can be worked on to not have that feeling easily, i think. Overall i really do feel the same, though with a slight bit different reasoning in some points. Some of your takes have been pretty off, but unlike others, your reasoning makes sense when you explain it. This is probably one of the more true things though, and its nice to see at least one youtuber say it for once.

Only thing I really don’t agree with entirely was the harping on afeera’s top undodgable, to me it adds to her unique feel, her incredible acrobatic ability makes it believable that she could turn in mid air to strike her opponent whilst they’re dodging. Not physically possible, but I’m personally willing to suspend my disbelief due to the rest of her animations being so acrobatically inclined

When swinging down, are you unable to move at all? This is more of a animation nickpick than realism nitpick. Otherwise people would critique how most dodge attacks would not be able to dodge all theses other swings when all you did was spin or step sideways.

I can see Shinobis "teleporting" as some type of smoke an mirrors misdirection thing, complete with smokebombs and everything. He's basically doing a nutmeg on you, totally appropriate for the hero. Shaolins acctual long distance fade into thin air teleport however is dumb as hell and sucks me right out of the experience every time.

It'd be cool if they added a reload mechanic to pirate, for example at the end of a chain you can either choose to do the unblockable attack or reload your pistol. this simple change would add sm depth to the character imo

When it came to Valkyrie in terms of cool factor i felt this. Valk could have some badass looking armours but sadly a good portion of the armours are far too similar and you can't stand out from other Valk customisations due to this

One of the most frustrating things about the community is that a lot of people complain a lot about character specific quirks that are bad/good in specific matchups and the end up getting taken out. One of the big things in fighting games is learning matchups so you can better utilize your chosen character to counter certain heroes. Almost every match up feels the same in the game now. Wait for a bash > Dodge attack/bash > chain pressure > 50/50.

My idea for pirate and her gun: she gets 2 shots, one each gun. (She has 2 in an execution so why not) she geta a jj/nobu style backstep where she reloads 1 gun. Give her the ability to heavy to turn it into an offensive dodge as well. The guns becomes a ranged attack kinda like a nuetral bash, where the animation is reactable enough to avoid, but fast enough to catch you if you arent watching for it. Remove the current dodge recovery because why does she even have it. Her backstep could be like a backwards dodge attack that stops the reload animation. That way she keeps the dodge recovery, adds realism, and makes the gun more than a bash.

I mean, for the afeera thing, she is a hypermobile fighter that´s just a beast cartwheeling and handing flying knees to her enemies, her being able to track enemies with a top atack doesnt strike me as an impossible thing, altough black prior is kinda dumb and both have top undodgable and side ublockable when the top is usually slower and heavier, maybe it hits in a way that knocks the weapon or shield out of the hand of the enemy

soooo... i was thinking a bout a hero that starts off with a spear, but when his health drops to 50% the spear snaps and he switches to a sword BUT before you change move sets you can try to pull of a deflect that makes massive damage and instantly switches to the sword.

On the fanatasy side of things i want a plague doctor hero who weilds a scythe that has like a finisher with a sorta plague effect makes enemies you hut ill and makes there maximum stam go down for a short time and only a certain max amount like 25% or less of a heroes max stam i want the hero to have primarily healing feats that heal your team like a healing dedicated hero

Remember when shugoki let out that big roar with a special camera angle when he finished with demon's embrace? Remember how cool it felt to do warden's big unblockable top heavy? Or when every hero felt unique and different instead of having 11 different remixes of the same 3 archtypes, hyperarmor on everything, dodge attack goblin, or orange man? On the point that "very horizontal attacks should be undodglable and not unblockable and vertical should only have unblockables" I can suspend my disbelief for most of them but I agree from a game balance perspective that horizontal attacks are easier to hit and can hit multiple enemies at once whereas top attacks are harder to hit but deal more damage. Ik you were explaining how its important to have fun and characters being viable js not always to priority but 1 Its hard to have fun playing cool characters when they are not viable and hard to justify playing them when they are just worse than the rest.

I been thinking for awhile that this games offense has taken such a huge turn towards reads that its become much more of a guessing game and matches are a lot more luck based specially duels and sure pirate is fine balance wise as a character they don’t feel to strong but when all they do is spam unblockables and then you guess wrong to many times and they win it just feels so unfun they didn’t outsmart me they didn’t have a better reaction speed then me they throw a bunch of reads and i guessed wrong im not saying remove unblockables but thag fact that every character just needs insane unblockables now i think kills the fun and uniqueness of the game

For Cool Factor, that’s one of the reasons I absolutely love Valkyrie, not cause she’s “S Tier”, but cause she looks very good, the mythical Valkyries are cool as is, and she’s a bit complex for me (she got move sets I know exists, and don’t know how to get to consistently)

I had so much fun researching Zerk deflect mechanic with its whiff recovery cancel and how I can use it. Figuring out optimal situations and timings to punish things like heavy side dodge attacks. But now I barely can use it because of that unexpected buff. Futhermore all this stuff have become useless as I can light parry any dodge attack As a result less fun for me ☹️

My only complaint is that we don't get any new maps for either dominion nor breach, the last new map that i have seen which is the zhanhu map in breach, instead of asking for heroes how about we get some new maps for both game modes

I think if ubi ever reworks Pirate they should implement a feature from a game called Swordman on The Oculus, in that game you can get a pirate cutlass with a pistol wedged between the blade, there's a meter on the side of your screen and every successful hit feeds the meter and once it full you can fire the pistol to insta kill a enemy(not an insta in for honor that'llbe horrible). I would love for that to be in the game she gets reworked, you can keep the existing gun feats because they can be activated in chain but the actual pistol blast you have to fill the meter to perform also they'd need to buff its damage too if it's going to be a progressive attack. They wouldn't need to change the animations from the existing pistol attacks either if they wanna be lazy with the rework, in general it just won't be spammed as often because you can't do it after every heavy attack and it would feel more rewarding to hit a pistol shot with the rework then it is now.

I like your point on things being believable and making sense, however the one I personally think is fine to suspend disbelief is pirates gun. Reloading just seems boring and I think the fact that she has a gun is unique, so while yes they could remove the base kit gun and have it as a feat or something idk I’m fine with letting the gun just have bottomless mag and peashooter bullets because I think it satisfies the other factors

I want to say before I start that I like the video, I think all of the points are good. Except for the believability factor. 5:18 right here you talk about how the moves make no sense with how they play in game and say how it takes away from immersion yet here at 4:50 you talk about how shinobi and shaolin teleporting isn’t breaking immersion. In my experience I have heard that people complain by the lack of armor and how ridiculous the armor is at times especially when it comes to the samurai and Vikings. If we can have someone go into the shadow realm then I think we can have someone have marry poppins pouch of ammo. The immersion only gets broken when something inconceivable happens like glitches or when you hit someone with a heavy especially when they have a shield and you go through it and can get an execution.

TLDR; I agree with you quite a bit and I think looking at Kensei, Centurion, and Shaman are key ideas of how heroes should be built like. Sadly, I don't necessarily think Ubisoft is really all that focused on For Honor and this will probably all fall on deaf ears. I think looking at heroes like Kensei, Centurion, and Shaman are good examples of heroes that are overall fun. I really hope that Ubisoft can look at this - not every hero has to have a kit to go up against every situation. Some heroes should be able to sign in 1v1s and others in duels. We need less monkey-brained heroes with constant hyper armor at every little point and turn and more heroes who have a unique kit that feels like it should be in place for the inspiration of that hero. A slight pet-peeve on my part; if shinobi and the shaolin monk can teleport around then pirate can have infinite bullets that deal 5 damage. To me - at least - it doesn't take away from the immersion in the world since once you add fantastical elements, some of the more offlandish are a bit more acceptable. Granted, I see what you mean by believability - someone like Medjay probably shouldn't be getting hyper armor just from spinning around (all the while copying everyone else's moveset). And for Black Prior lifting people, I like to imagine he's more just using his opponents' momentum against themselves. I think a big problem on Ubisoft's part is that they're trying to balance based on 4v4 instead of for duels. Not every hero should shine in a team-based fight and I think all heroes should be - at the bare minimum - viable for a duel. Centurion has hyper armor but - unlike the others that have hyper armor - he only gets it at the apex of a devastating - and highly readable - move; right when he's in the air of his forward dodge, right at the end of a charged heavy, right at the end of his final punch. Both in duels and in 4v4, he's viable. He has a kit that allows him to keep up with those he fights up against alone and an ability to move around or get people off of him. Similarly, Kensei plays in that same value of fun. His unblockable comes from the top and his wide arcing swings - though not technically an undodgeable - can act like an undodgeable attack. He has a mix-up kit that centers heavily around his top heavy where he can go into literally anything side-related or a guard break. He plays uniquely, it always feels fair when he defeats me, and he doesn't have a cheap moveset that you have to just get perfectly right to get out of (unlike Centurion who can put you into a cutscene if you don't know where the space bar is, lmao). And then there's Shaman - though with her specifically I haven't played much, her kit always feels well tuned, unique, and sensical. Her bite is silly but I always enjoy getting hit by it. She has a mix-up that reminds me of a peacekeeper but without such an emphasis on guard break and she has a viability mostly when she's in a duel or in a gank. The only time she isn't viable is when she's in a gank on her own - but I think that can be overshadowed based on how she's not really meant to be ganked; she's meant to be out in fighting 1-on-1 or with a firm ally.

You know, this is a good look as to characters. I had forgotten this entirely and I debate over Viability all the time, finding myself gravitating towards heroes that aren't as viable like Shugo and Cent whenever I just like their characters. Centurion is a Roman General with a passion for beating the enemy senseless, and Shugo is funny fat man. I will consider these points more thoroughly, and think differently on heroes that I previously just completely found unfair.

Honestly I do wish they would try more mechanics for some heroes. Warden could get some thrust attacks maybe a stance system like highlander. Personally I'd prefer customization or cross armor mixups because to me the scavenge system could be better. What if I'm centurion wearing lawbringer armor with glad helm etc. just tired of reskins at this point.

For me, I love the idea of shaolin and wanted a staff hero for a long time, but I can't get over the fact that he doesn't use his staff for defense. I know next to nothing about shaolin monks and if they ARE masters of defense with nothing but one arm bracer, then I'll admit I'm wrong, but it still won't feel right to block a top heavy attack from Shugoki with nothing but one forearm. I don't know why that bothers me more than other small unrealistic things, like all the smallest characters(like Nobu, PK, Shaolin, Orochi) being able to kick and easily throw around the heaviest fighters like Shugoki and Lawbringer when basic human strength says there's no way they could do that

Sometimes I'm ok with sacrificing realism for viability. Do I believe that it's possible for Nuxia to be able to displace a LB with her finisher heavy? Maybe. All I want is a new samurai with a katana and scabbard (not a shikomizue like kyoshin) with an Iaijutsu stance with 400ms, Bash (600ms and 500ms Bashs, the 500 will grant a light attack for 15 damage and the 600 ms 20 if damage) 500ms attacks, hebys or light charged attacks (either bash or unblockable) (no hyper armor) and softfints Iaijutsu, also called Battôjutsu, Saya-no-uchi 鞘ノ内, Nuki 抜き・居合 and Yore 乱曲, is the Japanese martial art of unsheathing the sword. It consists of sets of Katas, techniques or movements that allow one to deal with protections in order to certain situations. same as Highlander but faster and lighter and obviously with charged attacks The biggest difference would be the range of the weapon and the damage but of course with more different attacks

Honestly the reason why he seems “unique” is that his mix up doesn’t work as intended anymore. The only unique part of his kit is the stance swap, and it’s honestly laughable how it’s implemented. Also satisfying =/= unique.

Additionaly HL was the first hero with 2 stances, he has a kick soft faint into grab and heavy into kick into grab, and his wave dash requires to make a read, combined it has lots of combo potential who else has all of this? If this isn’t unique then i don’t know what is. Now, im not saying he doesn’t need a rework. His zone needs to be adjusted and he needs to have acces to high damage punish from a GB and that is it. I don’t want to see another UB-UD abomination that has the same mix-up as everyone else. Unique doesn’t equal boring

@@Master_of_disaster722 They demand you to play differently at the highest level, because they simply didn’t work as intended. You can’t claim that’s unique. Your (already not unique) mix up not working, forcing you to play different isn’t a result to unique character design, but rather lack of it. Wave dashing is just watered down dodge cancels. Now it is unique that it can be done on empty dodges, it should be refined instead of the clunky mess it is. If we are talking rework, it should be more than that. We need stance overhaul. Things like gb shouldn’t take you out of stance. A deflect property is needed to counter undogables yet be skillful. His wave dashing either needs to be refined or scrapped to just a unique form of dodge cancels. His offensive dodges should have s for the ability to use it in team fights. Gb should not have a high punish (goes against the entire character philosophy), instead grab needs to be looked at. Something as simple as late hyper armor, or dodge soft feint could fix its entire problem. The timing shouldn’t overlap with kick to grab either. Damage should be lowered, stam adjusted to be better. Defensive stance needs to be a two hit chain. The second hyper armored light doesn’t need to exist. Back step cc’s have to go. Opener light can be enhanced. Opener heavies slightly faster but still not off gb. Dodge heavy hitstun needs to be reduced. Sorry got side tracked. Point is that his mix ups aren’t unique at all. He just has so many problems with them that you can’t just use them like they are intended to be like other heros.
