In this episode of Electronic Basics I will show you how solar panels are wired up, why bypass and blocking diodes are necessary when working with them and how we can get the most power out of them. At the end I will also show you how MPPT and PWM charge controller can use a solar panel to charge up a battery.

Interesting to see that you also fell for the MPPT scam. The one shown in this video is actually not an MPPT type controller. The MPPT on its case is the name of the company manufacturing these. How about making our own?

I have not tested the charger yet but I thought that it was not real. That is why I did not feature it that much in the video.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ukposts.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

I never heard of MPPT. Try what I learned in electronics college, Maximum Power Transfer. Basically the internal resistance loads are matched. This way of thinking has been around for decades before solar cells became mainstream and it really does work. Good work charting via real life measurements, though!

Very nice video, Jeremy. The timing was perfect, i just started making a solar powered wheather station, wich sends the data from my roof to a reciever at my electronics lab via radio waves. I thought of using NiMh Batterys as a rechargeable backup power source, but i think im actually going to try using super caps, since the requiered power is not that high.

Even though you do not sound like a native English speaker, your diction is so good, that even relatively complicated concepts are easily understood by the listener. You do far better than most native English speakers, who, all so often on UKposts, you find, are not sure what they want to actually say. Complacency and some arrogance. I cannot thank you enough for the time you take to share all this knowledge and your sincerity in doing so. Thank you sir.

Thank you. Very informative. Can I ask you to explore a few Solar panel combinations: 1. No battery, Use the solar panel to run daytime electricity at home, limit peak day usage and then: 2. a Switch system that changes to using electricity from the Electrical Utility company as soon as the sun power decreases below a certain value. And 3. a switch system hat allows for sharing of solar panel electricity and available mains electricity. In this way we simply use the solar panels in conjunction with available power plant electricity to cut electricity costs.

Thanks for answering my question. I kinda wanted to see a circuit that tries to find the best power point, and the buck boost integrated into it. Basicly, a fancy joule thief in order ot use, not only low Volt/Amps of solar, but any other small power source, (IE, wind farm). Building a buck/boost to handle that kind of power would probably be impractical, but if you could show a joule theif/buck/boost that would send that information to a proper charge controller, that would be cool. Kinda like handing off the heavy load to something that can handle the heavy load. But, thanks again sir!
