In 1796, at the height of the Revolutionary Wars, Napoleon Bonaparte took command of French forces in northern Italy. He was just 26 years old and had never commanded an army before. Within weeks, he had turned his ragged, demoralised troops into a ferocious fighting force, defeating the Austrians and knocking Piedmont out of the war. With success, Napoleon began to believe it was his destiny to shape the fate of nations. In this series, we follow Napoleon's first glorious campaign step by step.

Big thanks to PMF Productions for all their hard work on the series and to Keith Rocco for letting us use his amazing artwork. This was Napoleon’s first campaign - the beginnings of a little-known French commander who’d one day become a global legend. So what was the decisive battle? Which victorious tales would his troops regale their loved ones with on their return to France? Give us your thoughts in the comments below. I am 83 and live in France, and now with French Nationality. In the Summer I found in a Puce (Flea Market) a remarkable document published in 1928 by Ecole Special Militaire, Saint Cyr entitled Cours d'Histoire Militaire. It is an absorbing publication but a litle difficult for a non-Military person as it follows Pre Napoleon, Napoleon, and Post-Napoleon history and tactics. I have yet to finish it but have just completed the Campaigns in Italy, about which I knew very little. To say it was complex is an understatement, so I have been delighted to discover your series on this period. I am now better 'armed' to 'battle' my own way through the rest of the extraordinary complexities of these periods! Brilliant work by all concerned with the series, and I would only hav one very small suggestion which would be to place the videos in Date Order of events, and then put the collected ones as a separate listing. Purely as an aid to my poor old brain! Many thnks for the series though, absolutely a massive aid to any one interested in this period. I will see the new film Napoleon next week, but it is panned widely here in France. The best I have seen so far has been the French TV series of Napoleon, with Christian Clavier in the leading role? I would say Rod Steiger in Waterloo ( and Christopher Pummer as Wellington) is th best film by a long way.

Just to watch of how quick Napoleon moved his army throughout the campaign is astonishing, to see Just one man move an army so wide that he was able to move like lightning speed throughout the entire Italian campaign and forced the Austrians to seek an immediate surrender and thus ending the war of the first coalition on the allies' head.

Arguably not even his best campaign too.Later on when the coalition has improved their armies to match his, he still beats them over and over again in battles. I'd say that's more impressive since the coalition basically rebuilt their whole militaries after this Italy campaign.

Napoleon found himself in some situations where it seemed impossible he could’ve clawed his way to victory. People often attribute Napoleons success to his enemies being ‘incompetent’ but I think both Wumser and Alvinci would’ve beaten any lesser general.
@doritofeesh
@doritofeesh 5 місяців тому
Oh yeah, most definitely. Even with Napoleon's skills, there were still some dangerously close moments such as in the Castiglione and Arcole sub-campaigns. When you actually track down the exact dates of the movements of the armies, you realize that Napoleon won just by the skin of his teeth through daring, audacity, and lightning quick manoeuvres. All of these had to factor into his success and, if even one element was out of place, it would have meant defeat. I've studied so many capable captains throughout history and don't think anyone else could have done it. Some might have come close, but fall just short; most everyone else would have been caught by Wurmser and Alvinczi's encirclement of their forces or forced to give ground entirely. The Rivoli sub-campaign, even accounting for Weyrother's poor usage of concentration (Provera, Bajalics, failing to use Mittrowsky's column), would have seen any lesser tactician destroyed. EHTV does have the numbers wrong for Rivoli, as Napoleon possessed only 20,400 engaged in the battle at most against 28,000 (25,100 if you don't count Vukassovich's column). Yet, Rey's division did not arrive until the end of the battle, so for most of the engagement, the actual French forces on the field were only 16,200, odds of 3:2. This is also because Massena had left the 32nd demi-brigade to guard Verona, so Brune was forced to hold off Lusignan's column with just the 18th demi-brigade (about 1,600 French vs. 4,400 Austrians). Even in the Bassano sub-campaign, you see Lauer concoct a plan to outflank Napoleon's positions concentrated around Rivoli and Verona, which is strangely reminiscent of the plan employed by Prince Eugene to bypass Marechal Catinat at the onset of his own Italian Campaign. By thrashing that operation as he did, he proved himself superior to a great captain (and one of his personal heroes), in that Eugene's plan rehashed by the Austrians were completely dashed. More so, because Wurmser and Lauer had far more resources than Eugene ever possessed.

As for the movie I just saw in theatres. If he wanted to do a movie on arguably the greatest conqueror there was. Then display his planning, cunning and execution. Show the strengthening bonds with him and his men. Show the risks of battle paying off. Show his inspiring speech to his men. This man earned his place in history. But rather… the movie was dominated by Josephine, he was belittled and shown to be weak. You never met his generals. You never felt excitement. You only saw what you’d think was a spoilt boy born into kingship. He was never portrayed as charismatic, he was never portrayed as successful. Napoleon was seen as a figure disconnected from reality that held a negative attitude rather than a beaming positive attitude of what he could accomplish. This director took on a film on Napoleon then ignored his history…why do I care about him whining to Josephine for more than half the movie? He won over 50 battles, would you like to delve into some and I’ll watch a romcom for a two hour love story? The pacing of the film is so bad you’ll end up confused as to what’s actually happening with the flashes through time. The explanations are horrid, they should’ve Atleast had a narrator so the butchery wasn’t so bad. To put it plainly friends I feel like a Prussian after the battle of austrilitz after watching that horrid, horrid movie. Please keep Hollywood away from all historical figures.

I think the thing that surprises me the most is how weak and inexperienced his army was. This isn’t the Grande Armee and he won by capitalizing on Austrian mistakes and the opportunities they created. It confirms that anyone other than Napoleon would’ve failed in Italy.

Napoleon really needs a 50 episode mini series on his life - nothing Hollywood writers could dream up could compare with what he did He's surely up there with Caesar and Alexander the Great - yet we really don't hear that much abut him, even though they just made a film about him (which I'm sure will be nonsense)
