All the customer wanted was an EV charger installed - so why did we decide to change the consumer unit?
In this video, we explore the process behind upgrading a consumer unit or fusebox to enable an EV charger to be installed.
Thanks to Ross from RS Electrix for helping to make this video. -

I thought we were past the myth of heavy load near the main switch. The thick copper busbar takes care of that. How much resistance will a 20cm link bar, 2 x 7mm thick have from end to end? A resistance test less than 0.005 ohms? Schneider Easy is not a good choice of CU or larger RCBO's. The wylex, MK, fusebox CU have good space. Especially with Compact RCBO. The space above the breaker and behind the busbar is what sparkies want.

Interesting and informative as well as well presented as usual. I had a customer send me pictures of there ev installation, then tailed into the Hensley to a single switch (fused). Only problem for me is there is no space left for a battery installation. There was a t&e running to the garage, just plain, and it's into the consumer unit. The evc is near the garage but I'm not sure what cable has been used. And was the first point installation. I've asked the customer if it can be fitted outside the house which happens to be behind the CU. Oddly he wants th t&e changed, which is ran under the garden. I've not seen the cu. But I would run a separate switch as the unit has everything in it. So I can wire from the main feed or the CU. But for time cost, small cu wins

Seems weird that they went to so much effort to put the incoming Line conductor on the right side of the main switch. Any reason ? I initially thought it might be to create a direct feed to the SPD from the main switch, but I assume the 20A MCB is the feed for the SPD. Also; minor observation, but it is good practice to put the "solid" sides of the crocodile clips together when nulling the leads. This avoids the possibility of a higher resistance in the hinge of the levered side of the clips.

Nice job. Just a suggestion that isn’t feasible at all installations, but keeping switchgear above 450mm/below 1200mm in domestic properties for disabled access does include the switchgear in the consumer unit & while gaining the extra for a neater job, the move would create problems for wheelchair users.

I'm an American owner of an old house that has had 3 significant breaker panel upgrades over the course of a number of decades of remodelling. I'd prefer it if electricians would think more about how things will look 20-50 years in the future and not just how it looks today. Modern cables might last 100+ years, so if people would adopt a convention of leaving a neat loop of cable in a wall cavity for all new circuits then future panels wouldn't need to shift position. I can already imagine a future requirement of Arc fault breakers at some point in the UK. And some companies in the USA have introduced WiFi smart breakers that might catch on. Both could require new panels with different layouts. Needlessly cutting wires short to make the current panel look perfect should stop.
@efixx
@efixx 2 роки тому
Brilliant comment - Future proofing is a major issue especially with the changes in world with EV, PV a d battery storage. We think the regulations and codes need to reflect the need for future proofing as electricians can only respond to the current needs and operate in a competitive market.

I tend to always run more than is needed in terms of cables. The problem you have is clients who want the best price, who are just thinking about the here and now. 10 years ago, no one was thinking of ev power and solar was just getting underway.
@TheEulerID

There are already breakers available that combine AFDD, RCD and MCB functionality in a single width DIN unit. I believe Hagar have one with Bluetooth connectivity for diagnostic purposes as well. That will fit in exactly the same space. One concern with all these things is that the failure modes are now very complex, and there is now even a phone App for the Hagar units and it's also possible to update the firmware on the breaker. This is going the way of modern cars - full of electronics requiring specialist software. nb. those very neat wiring jobs are fine, but I wonder if some flexibility for the future has been lost.

I have just been quoted an add on consumer unit at £259.99 in my quote. There is a separate £180 labour charge too for the installation of the EV charger. I'm not sure about that price because units do not cost anywhere near that figure, especially if its just a smaller add on to my existing consumer unit. It would be good to get a rough idea in these videos as to what things cost. Otherwise great content as always I have learned a lot. In fact its this video that has made me question the quote!

Why would you mount a CU at mid-level?? It looks hideous, slip down the stairs and smash into the CU - perfect. Perfect height for small children to have a poke around as well - is it going to be protected in any way? Should have been put at high level but of course that is more difficult.

I would have pulled the meter tails through the right hand side of the board. Using a Milwaukee cordless soldering iron to shrink the tubing isn't the safest way to do it - a heatgun would be better. I'd also avoid using insulating tape in the build as it degrades into a sticky mess over time (even 3M Temflex). Still a massively neat job - he obviously goes the extra distance and treats it like it's his own house.

@acelectricalsecurity
@acelectricalsecurity 2 роки тому
If you notice with anything in the UK, it's either just the right size or too small, it's ridiculous, that goes for our electrical stuff and even our kitchens, where we design them, that if you plug the appliance in it won't go far enough back, that's the poor design we have over here, if the people designing them head to fit them, then maybe things would change.

Eaton Memshield boards have loads of room. Havells do a range called PowerSafe which is identical to the old Memshield 2 range. These are superior to the more modern cheaper-looking Memshield 3. They are single phase boards which have a similar style to 3-phase boards.

Change to make money. Simply a Henry Block on the tails from the meter, tails from the block to the existing consumer unit. The other block tails to a new breaker and protection just for the outdoor charger and an in-line isolation switch then on to the charger on the outside of the building. Easier to mount a current limiter on the EVC this way too

It's highly unlikely that the vast majority of house would require one charger. More like 3 or 4, a his and hers + child and visitors? Going forward I would install a separate CU, minimum 4 ways. Or put a commercial one or two servicing the same amount of EV's. One is just not enough. In the case of multiple chargers synchronised usage would have to be used reduce power consumption.....needs some thought....
