People often forget Lovecraftian is different from cosmic horror. Cosmic horror is Lovecraftian... but Lovecraftian encompasses much more than just cosmic horror. It is especially Lovecraft's early stories that show a more open horror, which indicates to us the fact that even in the most mundane elements of our daily experience, horror can hide. Robert Bloch understood this well when he wrote Psycho. Robert Eggers also understood this very well when directing The Lighthouse.
@Mythraen5 місяців тому
"People often forget Lovecraftian is different from cosmic horror." Probably because it's not true. At least, it does not appear to be necessarily true. Wikipedia, for example, just rejects "cosmic horror" as it's own term. Also, if we consider "Lovecraftian horror" to be a genre, then just because he invented the genre, and therefore gets to have it named after him, doesn't mean he always wrote in that genre.

I'd add "Dark City" to the list! This movie had the 'luck' of being released the same year as "The Matrix," which explored similar themes. "Dark City" has strong Lovecraftian vibes and themes cleverly hidden in what looks like a typical science-fiction thriller. The acting, the narrative, and the score are solid, and the production values rock with eye-candy cinematography.
@mortanos89386 місяців тому
While I love Dark City I do however disagree that this has anything remotely to do with Cthulhu. It does however belong to the Film Noir genre.
@tigrebleu74586 місяців тому
@@mortanos8938 I agree: it's more film noir than Lovecraftian horror. Yet the movie has (rather strong) Lovecraftian vibes and themes, including madness, alien influences on humanity, and forbidden knowledge.
@mortanos89386 місяців тому
Four movies I can highly recommend, all of which concern themselves with Cthulhu are as follows: Dagon and From Beyond had already been mentioned but they are a must for any Cthulhu fan who has not seen them, and two others that were never mentioned are also great movies surrounding this. You probably have seen Hellboy (old version) which certainly delves into the Lovecraftian vibes, and then there is Deep Rising which may not have the mystery and suspense but definitely is a great action flick which uses lovecraftian creatures. There are quite a few more titles that were never mentioned, but my mouldy brain is still trying to remember them.@@tigrebleu7458

I saw Dagon with absolutely no expectations… by the end I was in love with it. Idk why but I really felt the idea of ‘being so confronted with inevitable horror that you just go with it’, resonated as very much a possibility for a protagonist in these stories.
@ProfArmitage218Рік тому
There was a pretty good 2010 German adaptation of The Colour Out of Space called "Die Farbe". It was filmed in black and white with the Color itself being the only thing in color, to show its otherworldly nature. Bob Fugger used a similar technique in his 1999 short film version of "From Beyond", with the Resonator causing color to slowly bleed into the black and white scene as the characters' perceptions were altered. While it was never a good movie, the legacy of "The Curse" has suffered even more now that Wil Wheaton has spoken about the exploitation, physical abuse, and sexual abuse that he and his sister experienced when working on the movie.
@Stand_By_For_Mind_Control6 місяців тому
Kind of a cool way to show color as almost dimensional. Like 2d color is black and white and those people were seeing 3 dimensions for the first time. That's actually a great way to explain the concept.

The Lighthouse performances by Pattinson and Dafoe are brilliant.

Lovecraftian movies mostly has two things in it. Another dimension and/or Sliney Tenticles...

Cast a Deadly Spell isn't meant to be horror. However, the fantastic cast and great music make it a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

Back in the 60s My Gran used to say "Everytime the World Opens itself to us, it swallows a few". I never did get past how absolutely CREEPED out it made me feel, as She'd WINK as she said it...... It always made me think of those horrid fish. Down in the darkness, with their luminescent LURES, just waiting.

I would add the following movies: Horror Express (1972): Taking place in 1906, with passengers trapped on a train, it deals with timeless cosmic horror. Prince of Darkness (1987): A group of investigators trapped in a church try to stop a timeless cosmic horror. Shadowzone (1990): A research in deep sleep, showing that at a certain level of deep sleep, monsters live in the Dreamlands, and a gateway is formed to enter the real world through the sleeping subjects. Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell Trilogy (City of the Living Dead - 1980 / The Beyond - 1981 / The House by the Cemetary - 1981): A trio of films heavily influenced by Lovecraftian horror. Phantoms (1998): Heavily influenced by Lovecraft's Shoggoth monsters, or, more likely, by Shoggoth Lords in Michael Shea's Mythos story, Fat Face, which seems closer to the depiction of the monster, although Shea's novel was from 1987 and Koontz's Phantoms novel from 1983.

Also Riccardo Freda's and Mario Bava's Caltiki the Immortal Monster is heavily Lovecraft influenced.

Very cool video, although I think the first Guillermo Del Toro Hellboy and some episodes of Love, Death and Robots are definitely missing here.

I was sitting here watching this last night and I actually stopped so I could watch Spring in its entirety before bedtime. It was a lovely movie, almost more of a love story than a horror. I thought the ending was very touching and I didn't mind the ambiguity.

I simply HAVE to see The Call of Cythulu. It looks fantastic. Personally, I love stop-frame animation. It has an otherworldleness about it which CGI just cant seem to deliver. Also, the cinematography looks amazing and, if the film is true to the source material, is an absolute must watch for me.

Rotten Tomatoes has no credibility in my opinion. There's a ton of movies I love that have been skewered by RT. Don't be deterred by poor RT scores everyone! 👍🏻
@paladin566 місяців тому
Especially as it seems to give very high ratings to extremely poor and sometimes terrible Disney products. Something very suspicious about RT, in my opinion.

Wasn't the movie The Lighthouse based on the last novella written by E A Poe? According to some reviewers, the tale had a Lovecraftian feel to it.

Does "Baskin"(Turkey, 2015) fit into this HP Lovecraft influenced horror film montage? Ooooh creepy movie, the usual cult, distorted time and space, and gore... has a slight Lovecraftian vibe, no Cthulhu but it has the creepy atmosphere.

I'm not sure if you guys covered it or not already, I looked and didn't see anything like it but you guys should do a video on Lovecraft video game adaptations, there are a good amount like "Call of Cthulhu" "The Sinking City" "The Shore" and my personal favorite game of all time that on the surface you would have no idea its Lovecraftian but "Bloodborne" Bloodborne is a souls game so it's in the same vein as Dark Souls difficulty wise. It starts out with you in a gothic era city over run by what seem to be wearwolves and something called "The Hunt" is going on and you're basically going through the city fighting wolf people and wolf type bosses but as you progress you start to collect items called "insight" and you start to notice as you collect and use more of it things begin to appear all over the city that weren't there before... well they were but we just couldn't percieve them because our "insight" was too low. You start to see giant Cthulhu type horrors as tall as dinosaurs gripping on to the sides of tall buildings, the monsters take a shift from beast to tentecled horrors. I don't wanna give away too much because even though its rather difficult its well worth the play. The omage to H.P Lovecraft is huge especially in the DLC content you get to a seaside fishing hamlet full of those creatures. Anyways highly highly highly reccomend to any Lovecraft fan, if it's too hard I'm sure UKposts has commentary free playthoughs somewhere.

I think this video should have been subtitled, “The collaborative efforts between HP Lovecraft and John Carpenter.”

When will the late Dan O'Bannon get the respect he deserves for ALIEN? It was HE who wrote, titled and CREATED it. The fact that it is Lovecraftian was because he himself said that he was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft as he was reading it at the time, on top of also being inspired by H.R. Giger's work as both met and worked previously on the failed Alejandro Jodorowsky DUNE film. O'Bannon said on interviews that he was adamant in writing and making "a Giger Monster film"because of the morbid beauty of Giger's work, and when the film started production it was O'Bannon who introduced Giger's work and Giger to Scott. Ridley Scott was just a last minute director, he did good on his approach on the way of filming, but O'Bannon was not just the writer and creator, he was the Supervising Visual Consultant, and he was in every department overseeing the making of the film and giving instructions to the chagrin of the would be thieves Producers of the film. O'Bannon needs to be honored more for HIS creation, HIS story, HIS ALIEN, not just Ridley Scott.

"The Void" was very interesting. As long as you expect all the endings to be depressing you'll be fine in this genre. Just try to enjoy the horror.
